Q.: Why does this serial killer exist?

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

/Scary story though

Residents have "their guard up and their gun handy,"

waiting for all the followup stories

"3rd mailman shot dead, trying to do his jorb"
"he was coming right for me"

wait, spree and serial?
where is the overlap??

A spree killer, also known as a rampage killer, is someone who embarks on a murderous assault on his or her victims (2 or more) in a short time in multiple locations.

A serial killer is a person who murders usually three or more people[1][2] over a period of more than 30 days with a "cooling off" period between each murder,

mkay, so serial killer take there time, spree killers are just shooting their load as quickly as they can

Why is it that serial killers always get the blame when people get killed?

"There is no greater fear than the fear of the unknown and nobody knows. You can cut the tension with a knife," Peeler said. "People are locking their doors, even in broad daylight."

Locking their doors in the daylight? That is madness.

Well, hopefully the 15 year old victim who survived being shot recovers, and she can give the investigation some more information.

SRSLY.

Not anything remotely as serious as TFA but in my neighborhood lately there's been some person (people?) opening cars and night and going through the glove boxes, stealing petty shiat. The response on the neighborhood mailing list? "Oh my, we always leave our car unlocked, you mean we should lock it now?" "yeah my car was hit too, of course we always leave it unlocked" etc etc. WTF?

I don't live in crime central or anything (though clearly there's some, as evidenced by this) but it's always just been pure REFLEX for me to lock my stuff and my house when I walk away from it. Lock my bike up too.

I stopped in Gaffney (my old hometown) to see the family yesterday on the way back from a business trip. The shooting last night was about a 5 minute drive from Mom's, and about a 5 minute walk from the sheriff's office, right next door to an auto shop that was still open.

This guy has some balls. The shooting of the two women happened during visitation for Mr. Cash. According to "he-said-she-said", from the scanner listeners, the TV/furniture shop from last night's shooting was closing but they got a call from someone asking them to stay open for a few more minutes. Then, last night, the police chased a suspect vehicle which ended with the driver letting out two teenagers and then shooting herself--paroled meth dealer with stuff in the car.

Leaving Mom's this morning at 5:30, I passed 20 sheriff's cars from 3 different counties. So, if you're driving through or near Gaffney this weekend, be sure to obey the speed limits.

smooshie: Isn't that a spree killer, not a serial killer?

Exactly. Serial killers generally have some kind of sexual motivations regarding their killings, whereas spree killers generally do not. This killer is more akin to Andrew Cunanan.

The sheriff is calling him a serial killer because the FBI told him it's a serial killer. He said that during one of the news conferences yesterday. One of the "he-said-she-saids" in Gaffney yesterday said that some of the evidence they're not discussing was part of the reason.

I came here to say something like that -- I thought a specific serial killer's victims were similar in age, physical type, etc and killed in a similar way to each other. Then I was worried that I've just read way too much crime fiction, which isn't exactly the same as having knowledge.

Glad to have my instincts confirmed.

I basically just reworded something he said when all the spree shootings happened at once a few months back.

BECK: But as I'm listening to him. I'm thinking about the American people that feel disenfranchised right now. That feel like nobody's hearing their voice. The government isn't hearing their voice. Even if you call, they don't listen to you on both sides. If you're a conservative, you're called a racist. You want to starve children.

O'REILLY: Sure.

BECK: Yada yada yada. And every time they do speak out, they're shut down by political correctness. How do you not have those people turn into that guy?

I grew up in a neighborhood where almost everyone keeps the key in the ignition and the house unlocked with a key under the mat when you do lock it. Moved to the city (Bos) for years and never locked the apt door. (Bike got stolen 4 times, though, even with the Kryptonite.) Moved to Europe and luckily I'm in a small town again where every most everyone keeps things unlocked. It's a good feeling. I dunno... I think there's something psychologically-damning about always feeling the obligation to lock everything up. Personally, as a kid, when people locked stuff up or hid stuff from me, it made me want to break in/take stuff. When people seemed/acted trusting, I didn't want to violate that trust. Trust/distrust is contagious in smaller towns, I think.

yes, I realize there are junkies everywhere who will steal, regardless

The difficult thing about being a mass murderer isn't the "murdering" part, it's the "mass" part. It's the pace you've got to keep up -- the sheer volume of murdering.

FarkingMonday: No. You need 5 kills to be on a killing spree.

U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a spree killing as "killings at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders." According to the FBI the general definition of spree murder is two or more murders committed by an offender or offenders, without a cooling-off period; the lack of a cooling-off period marking the difference between a spree murder and a serial murder.

The term "mass murder" refers to the killing of four or more people during a particular event. Examples would include killing several people in the course of a robbery, or setting a crowded nightclub on fire where four or more deaths occur.
