Who was the girl in the red shirt next to her? She was hot.

paygun: gilgigamesh: My guess is some journalist contacted her and gave a warning shot across the bow that they are going to run a story about her next week.

She's resigning before it breaks.

Yep.

From the things people are posting that she said at the the press conference, it sounds like the media pressure either A) simmered to the point where she couldn't take it anymore, or B) something new got added. I'm hoping for B) because it would make next week much more entertaining.

Klingon Penis: NobleHam: Scandal, or Senate run. Resigning just to run for the Senate seems odd, though.

As I said, especially since there's already a Republican incumbent in the seat that's up for election.

She just torpedoed her Presidential aspirations, so either she's retiring from electoral politics altogether, there's more to this story and another shoe will drop soon, or she's extremely, extremely farking dumb.

You make it sound like any of those are mutually exclusive.

zedster [TotalFark] 2009-07-03 04:15:55 PM
downstairs: zedster: downstairs: zedster: there was never a small government party, it just a matter of small national with large state governments or large national government with smaller state governments

Well, sort of. Smaller federal governments means states can CHOOSE to be small or large. Sort of how they wrote it up 200+ years ago.

and then realized was retarded 10 years later when they end the confederation

Well, that was 89 years later... and a little more complicated than that.

oops, I meant federation not confederation

shower_in_my_socks: Lost Thought 00: vanity

It wasn't a fluff piece. It skewered her. The Runners World or whatever it's called piece with the sexy running-gear photos was a fluff piece.

The Vanity Fair piece probably made her cry, and she's resigning because she can't take the pressure of being a politician on the national stage in a country with free press. That's my theory for the minute.

my money is on federal indictment for corruption.

All Apologies 2009-07-03 04:16:11 PM
NobleHam: If the Republicans want even a sliver of a chance in 2012, they should go with Fred Thompson.

I think Ted Nugent would be a far more prudent choice, he would lock in the gun voters.

SNL isn't live this week, is it?

shower_in_my_socks: I'll reiterate that today, the Friday before July 4th, is not the day you release GOOD NEWS or make a big announcement that is a positive for your career.

This is the day you bury shiat.

Something bad is either seriously up, or Palin's PR people are the dumbest motherfarkers on the planet (possible).

Probably has to do about the paternity test for Bristol's baby which was due to be completed sometime this week.

Ceiling Moran 2009-07-03 04:16:35 PM
Can this count as starting anothing celebrity trifecta? I mean, come on, Palin just killed her political career.

Blogger roundup on Sullivan's site:

If it's true that she's leaving the governorship before her first term is complete, her national political career is done.

--

It's over. You can't resign from a governorship and then run for higher office. Barring some strong reason, like needing treatment for cancer.

--

Walking away from the governor's office after one term is incredibly foolish -- but walking away from the governor's office after two and a half years in office is stupefying.

As has already been speculated here, I'd bet she's moving on to a more lucrative job in the private sector. It's either that or a tsunami of scandal is heading her way.

You know, it might be fun to watch someone like that running America into the ground. Provided I'm watching from outside and thus largely unaffected by the fallout.

Or Jay Butler and Beverly Wooley have evidence to back up what they are claiming.

Sym_pathetic: I bet it has something more to do with corruption, possibly dealing with government contracts.

I'd bet against you on this one. She was teflon on the whole campaign funds used for a shopping spree scandal.

STRYPERSWINE: The disconnect between the real Palin, the strong ambitious intelligent woman who's experience dwarfs Obama's and the Palin that the mainstream media tried to paint her as is vast.

Like many politicians, Palin's ambition far exceeds her talent and ability.

thekingcobra 2009-07-03 04:17:44 PM
There's no telling what the political climate will be in 2012 and therefore no real way to predict who the Republican nominee will be. It likely will not be her. Believe it or not I don't think she is stupid, and likely has the money to surround herself with some smart people (one does not "accidently" get elected to that level of office). This story likely means she is down in the polls for her re-election and unlikely to rebound enough to win. Its a way to step down without looking unpopular.

And no, this is not "the end of the Republican Party" as some in this thread suggest, nor are they going to become some non-influential minor party like the Greens or Libertarians. Power ebbs and flows in our system, and just like it wasn't the death of the Democratic Party in 2004 it wont be for the GOP this time. Those in power get blamed for what goes wrong, and the public being as fickle as they are, will be all too happy to jump on Democrats when something inevitably happens.

Rebublicans think their timing is good.
Of course, you can tell they suck at it by how well the "pull out" method works for them.
The repubicans never know when to pull out, until it's too late.

She'd be done in politics permanently if she resigned to take a private sector job. You serve your term in office unless you can't, not unless you don't want to anymore.

Listening to the replay of her rambling speech, it sounds like she is complaining about the press digging into ethical/legal issues.

I think it's something along those lines. Especially given her history.
