I am glad to be able to say that I've been in the crown. But it is totally not worth it for any other reason than to say that you've done it. 30 minutes climbing a spiral staircase with your nose in someone's asshole for a 10 second glimpse out of a 1/2 car garage door sized window. Being one of the dozens, nay hundereds if no thougsands thqat have been in the crown, I say it about farking time that these governemtn shiatatains have reopened the people's monument. It is a sin that they closed is in the first place, and that we allowed it.

I remember climbing to the top when I was a little kid. It was horrifying to say the least. Being crammed in a 5 foot by 5 foot room at the top of a giant staircase with a bunch of sweaty strangers. Yeah, can't exactly say it was a highlight of my vacations as a kid. It was just a few months later that 9/11 happened so I guess I was lucky to be able to have gotten to the top of there.

When they closed it I sent a shiatty letter to the parks people. Glad to see it's going to be open again.

I'm genuinely surprised they reopened the crown at all. I spoke to the NPS Rangers who ran Liberty & Ellis Island several years ago, and they were relieved the statue had been closed to the public. Not because of terrorist threats, but for safety issues. There is NO evacuation possible from the crown if there's a fire in the base, and the statue will basically become a large copper chimney, funneling smoke right up to choke everyone to death even if the fire never reaches them.

That being said, I will absolutely try to get a ticket next time I'm in NYC.
