eggrolls: I'm genuinely surprised they reopened the crown at all. I spoke to the NPS Rangers who ran Liberty & Ellis Island several years ago, and they were relieved the statue had been closed to the public. Not because of terrorist threats, but for safety issues. There is NO evacuation possible from the crown if there's a fire in the base, and the statue will basically become a large copper chimney, funneling smoke right up to choke everyone to death even if the fire never reaches them.

That being said, I will absolutely try to get a ticket next time I'm in NYC.

Exactly. The crown was never designed nor intended to be a tourist destination. There's a reason why it's so hellish to get to the top - it was designed for maintenance access only. 9/11 may have been the catalyst for closing it, but it should have stayed closed. This is just another example of the "if we don't do X, the terrorists win" mantra in action.

BrokenDrew: Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! We're full!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Stay the fark out!"

It's over 14% in Michigan.

If you don't factor in Detroit, it's not nearly so bad. And to be fair, no one should ever really factor in Detroit. For anything.

Soon Cheney or Bolton will claim this will allow the terrorists to have an excellent place from which to launch their ICBMs into Staten Island, or somesuch hysterical nonsense.

It should have re-opened a few weeks after September 11th.

If they could launch an ICBM from the Statute of Liberty, the terrorists really WOULD have won. Not even SPECTRE got that far out of 007's control.

Not I. I've been to NYC many times in the last 8 years and never bothered going. Went by it on the Circle Line one day, took some amazing photos of it, but didn't see a reason to actually go to the statue. Rather spend my time roaming around the city than hanging on an island.

But that's just me.

It is time like these I have to say what ever happend to

"This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself-nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days."

I went up into the crown back in '98. It's was surprising how small it is, how small he windows are. And you didn't have any time at all to look. There was a Park Ranger up there ushering people past the windows and back down the stairs.

Don't need to do that again.

Mentat [TotalFark] 2009-07-04 01:20:30 AM
A Shambling Mound: I'm still not entirely sure why they chose to close it in the first place. Statistically it would make more sense to close every farmer's market in the US than a major landmark if you're worried about bombings.

The rationale was that it's a relatively fragile monument and, because it's on an island, there would be a high density of tourists with no where to go during an attack.

Since then politicians have realized that making people afraid of everything allows them to do whatever they want.

The Power Of Nightmares is a good watch if you want to see what other parts of the world make of what's been going on in the US these past couple decades.

k4thrynnn: I remember climbing to the top when I was a little kid. It was horrifying to say the least. Being crammed in a 5 foot by 5 foot room at the top of a giant staircase with a bunch of sweaty strangers. Yeah, can't exactly say it was a highlight of my vacations as a kid. It was just a few months later that 9/11 happened so I guess I was lucky to be able to have gotten to the top of there.

Wow, you must still be young. And, yes, your profile shows you as 17. You might not want to tell the world that, jailbait.

I've been to the top and I would like to reiterate what others have said.

It is totally NOT worth it.

Seriously. Don't go. I promise you will be underwhelmed and disappointed.

Seriously, look at this video, it shows you what is inside. Those stairs really suck. The windows are really dirty, the top is a small platform.

If the original security measures had been anything other than random nonsense, I might agree. Unfortunately we got 7 years of retarded, pointless rules but thankfully those rules still exist everywhere else and are in the hands of rent a cops everywhere.

Yes I am drunk,

So what !!!

Radio host Bruce Williams ran a public campaign years ago to do so. My congressman gave pat replies that were non answers. Reopening was somehow too controversial for many representatives even though they received a pile of requests.

Yeah, that base looks like such a tinder box with it's stone, steel and concrete support of the statue itself. Tough beans to the park rangers on the island. At least they get the easy gigs rather than having to pull someone from a ravine or cliff in Yellowstone.

If someone wants to take a chance having a heart attack or some crazy chance of a fire death, whats it anybody elses business. We have enough people running around trying to remove all the innocuous dangers in life. If you want more mantras to hate, others may point out the drive over the ferry depot is probably more dangerous than the hanging around inside it.

NEDM 2009-07-04 08:23:18 AM
Bob Dolemite: NEDM: Wait, is it just going be open ONLY for the fourth, or is it reopening for good?

RTFA, jackass

When they closed it I sent a shiatty letter to the parks people. Glad to see it's going to be open again.

Well, sorry. I did read the article, and it implied it was only tomorrow. I was asking to make sure, as I am going to visit NYC in a month.

opaque 2009-07-04 09:07:41 AM
15,000 visitors a day. But 30 people an hour allowed up.
9.30-5pm opening hours so call that once an hour, that's 8 groups a day = 240 people will get to go up.
That's 1.6% of visitors will get to go up.
Not quite as exciting as it sounds, but seeing the video (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8133203.stm) you can totally understand it. Forget about fire risks etc, all you need is one person holding up everyone else or a medical emergency and that's problems galore.

Open for 2 years then closed again for more maintainance, so I guess that'll mean it'll be closed for the 10 year anniversary of 9/11?
