I thought this was a very cool thing for the guy to do, cost him like half a million. I would have gone for it but I'm not the kind of douchebag willing to stand in line for four hours just to save $15.

When someone demonstrates extreme generosity as a thank you for their citizenship and success in this country, there are bound to be a few extremely petty self-serving morons popping up to denounce it.

Don't like it? Open your own free buffet at your house to people who AREN'T Canadian citizens. You'll show 'em.

It's worse. This is the only thread I could find that mentions the deal.

From that thread, this is where the 'criticism' begins:

"You have to wonder if James Chiu will continue this promo next year, I heard he was criticized for discriminating against non canadians for asking them to pay or something like that...which is abit silly to me."

People are tools. So I'm assuming you had to show a birth certificate, driver's license or passport to get a free meal?

How it this a violation of human rights? The government does it all the time. It's called a Health Card, something you have to show to prove you're province of residence so you can get free basic health care and weed out the non-residents (*cough* Americans) who are trying to get free basic health care.

I live very near a Mandarin in Barrie Ontario. The line up was insane. But the outrage for discriminating against non-canadians probably never happened. Clearly the National Post is trolling for readers and it worked. There are certainly enough disgruntled Canadians looking for proof that non-Canadians are an ungrateful bunch of hosers.

austerity101 2009-07-03 03:00:03 PM
As misfocused as this outrage is, the principle is sound. I don't know what the laws are in Canada, but we do have laws here against discrimination based on national origin, right? Why should it be ok for a business to discriminate that way? I can understand why budsterr was trying to say.

Pictures? Are you referring to their repeatedly rat-faced or borderline-Down's syndrome "Page 3 girls", dredged from Toronto's finest dive bars during happy hour with the promise of 24 hours of fame and getting to blow the photographer? Totally a reason to read the Sun.

Yes, I'm aware Down's syndrome is a trisomy, there's no "borderline" about it

Most of the NP articles, especially in the politics section, are so biased it's almost like reading the Sun. Have to agree NP probably has the best Business section (which I don't read) though.

If they were refusing to serve non-Canadians, then that'd easily fall within discrimination laws. Instead, they gave their shiat away, and visitors were welcome to pay at the normal rate just like every other day.
Still, it'd have made sense to include immigrants.

Its the exact concept of a restaurant offering you free meal on your birthday. You have to prove its your birthday by showing ID. Nobody craps their pants and fires up Firefox to inform the world about that earth-shattering discovery. If its not your birthday you get diddly-squat for free. If so inclined and not on the floor rolling around in full-on tantrum mode, you are more than welcome to cram your gullet full of cake - it's just gonna cost you the 20 dollars.

If its not my birthday I wouldn't proclaim, "SHIVER ME TIMBERS, I DESERVE A FREE MEAL LIKE THE REST OF THESE BIRTHDAY FOLKS" Because I'd look and sound like a moron...just this small minority of idiots.

I agree. The local [insert fast food.sit down place] offered something similar for veterans day. I'm a vet but I didn't bring my ID or DD214 so I didn't get a free meal. I went back to work and ate my ramen for lunch.
