(Canada.com) Stupid In Canada you can't be held criminally responsible for your actions if you're under 12, which is great news if you're a 9-year-old who wants to burn down an abandoned McDonald's   (edmontonjournal.com) divider line 40

In this case, the parents should be held liable.

The real news story is that a McDonald's closed. I thought opening a Mickey D's was a sure bet in any economy.

They probably just switches locations... to a building with bigger seats.

That's exactly what happens.

Oh, come on. When you were 9, wasn't the thought of burning down a building the coolest thing ever? Or was that just me?

Isn't burning down a McDonald's an act of community service?

/I'll have the fish fillet.
/and a McChicken.

If this is wrong....I don't wanna be right....

Was a kid....played with fire...almost burned down the apartment building I lived in. Never played with fire again. I'll bet this kid has learn his lesson, or will grow up to be a pyromaniac. One or the other.

It certainly has been my plan since high school. That or a 7-11, but the McD's seemed the safer bet.

Police have talked to the parents of the boys, police spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu said.

See?

The system works!

I'm thinking Dollarama or Value Village.

(just checked, neither of those are publicly traded).

McDonald's use to, apparently the don't any more, have a very strict policy to tear down the buildings in x number of days. That is why you normally do not, or did not use to, ever see a out of business McDonald's or some other business built in an old out of business McDonald's.

Given that the whole notion that retributive justice fixes anything is backward, stupid, and barbaric, the notion of punishing children as if they were adults is even more so.

There is a better way. It's called restorative justice, it takes a variety of forms, and it works. It's better for victims because it's treated as a crime against them rather than as a crime against the state. It's better for public safety because it reduces recidivism, and it's a far more humane way of dealing with those who commit crimes that is more likely than a prison sentence to reintegrate them into the community in a functional non-offending manner.

Poor Zoe, she's never going to live that picture down.

I'm wondering if she's going to grow up to be a firefighter or something equally ironic.

Lock them up for years!

It's the only way to 'rehabilitate' them. They'll surely be well-adjusted and productive members of society when they get out.

Jail is criminal training boarding school.

Tim Horton's is the only guarantee.
I thought I saw one closing once, but it was just moving down the street.

Here you aren't held responsible, but you still (ie: your parents) gotta foot the bill for the damages.

I thought flame grilling was more Burger King than McDonald's. Perhaps that's why they lost their franchise?

Very unlikely that the parents will be asked/forced to pay for this. Much more likely the insurance will cover it and that's about it. Probably the building owner is thrilled.
