I'm 24 and live in a large city and see absolutely no reason to learn to drive. Carrying a week's worth of groceries or 75 lbs of luggage on the bus seems like less of a hassle than paying for insurance, repairs and parking. But to each their own.

My wife's grandmother made meals for "those poor elderly shut-ins" when she was 100. When we pointed out that some of those old ladies she pitied were 25 years younger than her, she didn't see the irony. She was healthy, walking around, and busy cooking and canning to the end. At 103, she decided "I'd better get on up there, they're probably starting to think I didn't make it", took a nap after breakfast, and never woke up.

Neither she or one of my grandmothers ever drove. They lived their lives in small towns where they walked a block to the market or the post office. Not uncommon for women of their generation to never drive. When they became adults around 1920, driving wasn't the necessity it is today.

Lots of women of that era--even my mother's, and she's 20 years younger--never learned to drive.

I wish my mom had more of this woman's gumption. People who stay involved with stuff into their old age never age as much, or as badly, as people who are hell-bent on "taking it easy." That whole sitting on your ass business in retirement is a deadly trap. I've never seen it do any good.
