it is all Tom's fault.

myspace is proof that you have to dial back on the user creativity to protect your brand. along with that, find other ways to make money than with the same old banner ads. I have rarely gone onto myspace in the last 12 months because everyone I know has switched to facebook; that and at least one of my pcs got a virus from a myspace page.

Kraftyman:Danah Boyd gave this talk at the Personal Democracy Forum in NYC last month.
Full text, (pops) for anyone who cares to read it...

sample:
"The fact that digital migration is revealing the same social patterns as urban white flight should send warning signals to everyone out there. And if we think back to the language used by teens who use Facebook when talking about MySpace, we should be truly alarmed. Those who are from privileged backgrounds tend to be far more condescending towards those who are not than vice versa. Many of us in this room come from privileged worlds where we want to "help" those who are not well-off. Here is where a privilege-check is necessary. How often do our language and mannerisms reflect a problematic level of condescension? Perhaps we should look at our teens. They are certainly speaking in a manner that reveals distrust and condescension."

in other words, blah blah blah blah blah.

although i hope her next "study" will be on the subject of stupid comments on youtube.

It's not white flight. It's anyone-any-sense-of-decent-web-design flight. At least on Facebook I can look at someone's profile without risking a seizure.

\Left Myspace because of the glitter gifs and moving backgrounds
\\Also because they use ColdFusion (eww!)

Still filled with rage that switching sites is racist though, facebook is just too easy to use over my space.

To be fair, ColdFusion probably doesn't support cookies or something. Or Tom couldn't figure it out. It is a very complex language.

"White flight" didn't kill Myspace. "Hipster flight" did. Hipsters made Myspace blow up in the first place. They flocked there because the site had obscure bands to listen to and the site itself was little known. (Like a social network version of Pitchfork.) From there, every hipster's mother, sibling, cousin, dog, whatever, signed on to see what the deal the hipsters were crowing about. And from there, those people's friends and whatnot joined as well. That's when the hipsters fled because Myspace had become too popular and wasn't "cool" anymore. (Hipsters don't say "awesome" unless they are being ironic.)

They've moved onto Facebook but that has been getting stale lately. And now they are on Twitter but that too has been becoming lame until the Iranian elections happened and they were able to be a part of the protesting force. (Even if it was from their over priced loft in Williamsburg that mommy and daddy pay rent for. Hipster love to "fight the power" more than anything else.) So, Twitter is back to being cool for the time being.

MySpace made some major mistakes.

The first one is allowing extensive customization of pages with little attention to functionality, lag, interoperability and load times. It comes down to simply one fact; just because you can does not mean that you should.

Second...they let themselves get overrun by second-rate businesses and scams that did more to detract from the user experience. What's worse was that their security was so dodgy that the experience went from annoying banners to user accounts backed by 'bots that users were forced to deal with.

It's funny because at one time MySpace was king of the heap. They owned social networking from stem to stern and managed to let it slip away forever for the sake of bad security practices and making a quick buck.

I think a week into having my FaceBook account I realized that MySpace was going to be abandoned pretty quickly. I got to be right about that. However the brand name is still pretty strong; if they could only police themselves and position themselves as an alternative that's at least equal to FaceBook they might have a chance. The first step would likely be putting a 30 day expiration on all accounts, locking down customization and putting in place some real security provisions.

You're too lazy to change it and your COMPUTER had a problem with remembering the password...and it's the website's fault?!?

Brilliant! Did you figure that out in a blamestorming session?

At this point, MySpace and Facebook are so similar it really doesn't matter anymore. The only thing FB is missing is the seizure backgrounds and music, it's got all the other tacky shiat, and MySpace has done a good job of copping some FB features (embedded chat, first and last names, shiatty applications).

1. Facebook has potential, but I get annoyed by people sending zombies at me and buying me "drinks" digitally. You wanna buy me a drink, show up at my house with a case of beer, otherwise, shut the fark up.

2. Myspace is OK for promotion if you do music, but even that is getting so saturated with crap that it's almost not worth it any more. Every day I get a dozen add requests from "producers" and "rappers" telling me to "peep their tracks." No thanks. Don't have the time or the stomach for it any more.

3. Twitter is fun if you're bored out of your farking mind and want something amusing to kill a few minutes. Oh, that and the fact that I won a free pair of custom VANS shoes for following a VANS rep at Coachella on Twitter. I follow a few musicians, a few athletes, and a few personal friends, and that's about it.

I believe the difference has more to with age than anything. I believe that most people over high school age are more apt to find the cluttered up garbage that is a Myspace page to be incredibly annoying. I'm looking at you loudass mp3s. It reminds me of the early days when websites were not much more than a jumble of animated GIFs, blue links and midi sounds.

At least facebook has a clean presentation. I have a facebook page and thought it was cool to find old friends from high school. Most of my friends have facebook, including my "brown" ones. One thing that is similar with most of us is that we are in our early 30's and educated. One way I look at it the is parents have facebook, their teenage kids have Myspace.

Not for long. Facebook seems to be determined to get rid of all the nice white space and clean design on the page and fark it up with shiat on a page like Myspace and Xanga.

This new effort to make it the new twitter is farking garbage.

The day I go to someone's page and have to hear any music auto streamed is the day I cancel my account.

myspace makes more sense if you posses at least 3 of the following attributes:

2] familiar with art and stage
3] high hormone levels
4] born salesman
5] indie musician
6] just wanna have fun

Choosing between Facebook and Myspace forces one to answer a fundamental useability question:
Do I wish to connect to friends, family, co workers etc?

or

Do I wish to show in digital form what a unique snowflake I am?

How that question is answered will determine which site one uses.

I don't do the "social" thing on MySpace- I use it to check out band demos while I wait for their press kits to arrive. Looking at their "Friends" and "Comments" sections is a good way to get an idea of what crowd will show up for their show if booked:
I had an out of town "jazz/funk" band want to book a night but after I checked out their MySpace page I discovered they were a bunch of wigger rappers and the comments all seemed to be about the fights that happened at other venues when they performed.

MySpace is great for a band that is just starting up and doesn't have money for a domain or to have somebody create/maintain a quality site for them. Yes, there are some truly ugly MySpace pages but since the bands generally design their own MySpace pages and maintain it themselves you can get a pretty good insight as to their professionalism and character.

Karmadrome: glad to see they got something right in that article though "...And Macs are more cultured than PCs."

Macs are more cultured than PCs in the same way a sterling silver butter knife is more cultured than an 8" chef's knife. The silver butter knife is pretty and easy to use, but expensive and incompatible with many cutting tasks. If you know what you're doing, the chef's knife is far more useful and usually less expensive.

(Predictably) I disagree. I can do just about as much with my Mac as someone of similar skill can do with their PC. In reality, just about the only thing I can't do is run specific pieces of software, though there will usually be a Mac alternative.

To use your knife analogy, Macs are like Swiss Army Knives, and PCs are like Leatherman tools. Incompatible, but capable of doing largely the same tasks.

What's the point?

No label is actually gonna ink somebody off of their myspace hits, it's just a pack of attention whoring kids, mostly, there's no way to actually make it DO anything other than sit there and beg for friends and hits.

It's pathetic.

I can make more people remember my songs and maybe want to buy my record in one hour on stage than in a month of whoring for play counts on some jive assed website where I might not even own my own songs after I upload them.

Live music really *does* sound better.

facebook: irrelevant.
Twitter: irrelevant. (BAWWWW some more, asswipes. Truth hurts.)

If the internet is your single, solitary tool for communication, you will not get anywhere in life. Period.

Does that mean the spoken word is irrelevant because it's not an acceptable "single, solitary tool for communication"? Those sites aren't email or instant messaging, but it's absurd to ignore the fact that these are certainly relevant means of communication. (Except for Twitter, which would have been a great idea a few years ago, but is going to die as soon as most people can update their Facebook page directly from their smartphones, which will be very soon.)
