Oh my... does anybody remember.. what was that site..?

Something city or town or whatever and the GUI was like all these windows and you clicked on one and it took you to your "neighbourhood" where your easy to generate page was?

There was a neighbourhood for everything. Fanboys, schoolgirls, TeeVee show addicts. The one for musicians was "Tin Pan Alley".

Wasn't Myspace always considered juvenile and immature? I remember getting on there about 3-4 years ago, when Myspace was all the rage amongst high schoolers, and was becoming famous for creepy pedophiles picking up high school girls. I deleted my account several days later.

And I think we all remember what happened to Friendster. Speaking of immature, despite Facebook's supposed maturity, why do I keep getting silly app-generated requests for baby farm animals, virtual drinks and the like?

So I have the choice between a site where I can connect with friends in an easy manner, never have any screwups, annoying ads, password hacks, phishing scams, annoying music playing that I cant turn off, goofy flashing shiat I have no control over, text I cant read on a background I cant see.....or a site where when I go to it it instantly shows me what my friends are doing, whats going on with them, with black text on a plain white background and rarely ever any f-up's?

Yeah, I'll definitely take the latter please.

Oh wait, I did. I've been Myspace free for 3 years now.

Heist 2009-07-03 09:58:59 AM
So the article is saying that:

White people are well educated and like clean, organized layouts that are arranged in a manner such that you can actually read the profiles...

Black people are solely interested in embedded music, videos, and gifs, e-bling that screams for attention and ultimately makes the page slow, obnoxious, and unworkable.

Yep, that sounds like a reflection of society at large.

(Trolling, am I doing it right?)

interruptive_cow 2009-07-03 09:59:25 AM
Any socioeconomic disparity is probably related to the fact that Facebook began as a tool for people who are in college. It continues to be anchored by this group. People with post-high school education are less likely to be poor and are more likely to climb the socioeconomic ladder a bit.

Myspace is not the ghetto of the internet, it's the digital herpes and crabs and HIV and Hep C infested hooker of the internet.

For some reason, that was the one free Web host that had no appeal to me, and I don't remember why. Maybe because Tripod and XOOM and WebJump were good enough that I could get by with their hosting plans.

Ah, the olden days of the Intertubes, when good things were free and turning a profit was overrated.

Yes, digital "white flight" is some kind of crack across the face of society.

When will Facebook end its vicious "no coloreds" policy?

Myspace has been a digital ghetto for the last couple of years. But this whole "if you migrated to Facebook you are white, if you stayed with Myspace you are black or brown" stuff is B.S. - Myspace is 99% spammers.
Spammers come in all crayola shades.

farkingnotworking 2009-07-03 10:31:10 AM
I think the shift from myspace to facebook is also partly an age thing. All the bells and whistles of my space tend to satisfy junior high appetites. As people on myspace get older (and as older people realize they should join a networking site and look for a place to go), they want something with more content and fewer glittery butterflies. Plus the screeching emo music that plays every time you open up those kids' pages makes me want to gouge my eardrums out with a fondue fork.

Wow the author of that one is an asshat. Myspace has all the cutting edge web design of 1996. Same friggin' functionality for the most part, myspace is just annoying so most people don't use it.

These people who constantly play the race card are the ones who keep it in play. They make that kinda crap worse by shoving it down people's throats.

I left myspace because the damn thing would make me type in my unwieldy password that they gave me every time I tried to log in. My computer could remember every other password out there that I have, but not that one? I got tired of looking it up and went to facebook, which is something my friends were asking me to do anyway.

A new fangled white flight? Are only white people doing this or something?

Where does Second Life fit into all of this?

A relation was telling me how great it is and how she spends every day after work on it. It sounded really creepy and more than a little pathetic.

For me, I mainly got sick of getting ear-raped whenever I visited the MySpace pages of other people. No, I don't want to hear your tastes in shiatty music at full volume whenever I try to view your profile.

Top that off with unreadable page designs that makes Geocities look tame, and you start to see why I haven't logged in there in a while.

And don't get me started on the third circle of hell that is the MySpace forums......
