Came here to say the same. If MySpace didn't sell adspace to every spam site with shiny, sparkly flash banners, people may have wanted to stick around. Oh, and also if they had bothered to work on making things user-friendly. That helps, too.

Seriously though? White flight? The very term is racist by itself. If someone else moved into a neighborhood and they immediately began doing dumb shiat, getting the cops called, not keeping up the house and so on, you bet your ass that the people that had been there, white, black or whatever, would either try to help the new people or look for someplace else to live. Most people like this don't want to be helped, so it's usually the latter option.

I don't understand how there is any barrier to entry for websites, which kind of negates any hope of such argument. People who could afford to leave the city did so. No one is forcing anyone to stay on a social networking site.

Yeah that's it. If your page doesn't have flashing backgrounds, dancing gifs, background music playing as it loads, and who can forget 1000 *thanks for the add* pics all over it. You're just not interesting.

I'm thinking it is because MySpace is painful to use given its horrible design and the absurdly obnoxious customization users can do.

I didn't think there was anything racial about MySpace. I stopped going there because I was tired of having to delete a dozen friend invites from people advertising their site with nude pics, with every login.

I had a MySpace account back in college, but few of my friends were on it; even fewer still are. Most of us are on Facebook, though. My MySpace social network is mostly people I've known on the Intertubes, or my friends' untouched profiles from five years ago. My Facebook network is deeper...at first it was my circle of friends and people I'd met at college, now my co-workers, people I volunteered with for the NH GOP. I think maybe people gravitated more to Facebook because it had a more serious aura to it; you could be a part of a social network without feeling lame if you didn't decorate your profile with eighteen flashing GIFs and five embedded videos. Hell, the proliferation of gaudy profiles is enough to keep me from checking MySpace more than once every few months.
