Six of the seven banks were owned by the same family. So, effectively, only two banking groups had banks closed.

Could this have anything to do with most banks being closed today for the holiday?

So what does that make us?

More to do with the federal government being closed today for the holiday.

And I have the day off too. What should I do? Go into my bank (open) and pretend to be from the FDIC?

Right after the end of the 2nd quarter? A lot of failed shiat gets dumped in the gutter. Gotta make room for management's 2nd half of the year failed shiat.

The government never takes a day off. It guards and protects you and your interests 24/7

If no one has more than a couple of hundred bucks to their name what do we need banks for anyway? Let a few banks stay open for the richers to play with, and close the rest.

TFA: ...bringing the total number of U.S. bank failures to 52 so far this year.

In other news, when businesses fark up they go under. Banks shouldn't be any different. There are over 8000 banks and a nearly equal number of credit unions in the US. I think we'll be OK for a while...

...at least until "banking reform" is passed which will put more small banks out of business because they can't afford the compliance costs. Once again, regulation will be embraced by the big boys because it will put them at a competitive advantage over smaller banks. They have the resources to influence policy and to pay for the requisite army of accountants and lawyers; the small banks don't.

We don't need more banking regulation. We just need to tweak and enforce the laws on the books and shoot those who violate them.

yeah but they were 7 companies, no?

For example, in New York there is a large banking group NYCB. Under them, they own about 8 or so rather large banks. But they all fall under one company.

With the 6 that closed from the same family, it was my understanding that they were 6 independent companies.
