3_Butt_Cheeks: Considering it was based on opinion and speculation, with no factual merit in almost it's entirety, I'd say just about all of it.

If by opinion speculation you mean quotes both attributed and anonymous by people who have worked with the woman over the last 10-ish years, then yeah...

bill4935: I don't hate Sarah Palin. I'm practically Green/Red, but I don't hate her at all.

1. She's easy on the eyes. She's got the same politics as Maggie Thatcher, but I never daydreamed that Maggie was walking on my back in shiny white sneakers (btw thanks, rocinante721!)

2. She's a great magnet for Family-Country-God types. Keeps 'em busy while more moderate candidates collar the much larger centrist vote. America needs more moderate politicians. If Palin makes pandering to your base "uncool", it'll be her greatest gift to politics.

3. She's hilarious. Not only is every other cliche out of her mouth instantly repeatable, but the Palin-Biden debate meme is one of my favourites.

4. Not that Tina Fey needed a career boost, but anything that gets that lady more screen time is okay in my book. Ms. Fey: Brains are the new sexy, and it don't hurt none that you're sexy to start with.

5. I figure 2012 is Romney's chance, but he'll lose after Obama takes credit for the natural recovery from recession. Smart backers will get Palin a'studyin' to smarten up for her chance in 2016 (Gingrich will be disqualified by a heterosexual scandal in 2011). And Hillary is gonna demolish Sarah in debates, then just squeak by in the Electoral College by getting all of California, NY and surprisingly Texas, while conceding most of the landlocked states to Palin. Texas would never send a woman from Alaska to Washington. They hate Alaskans a lot more than Arkansans. Looking forward to Bill being co-President again.

that would make me happy, I like that view of the future.

Hey, when she fails to give the guy an interview to, you know, answer the charges... what do you expect? Also there was a fair bit of retelling of those actual event-things, like her playing fast and loose with the facts; and my favorite tidbit about her authoring that e-mail, using the voice of God, to announce the birth of one of her children. Does retelling those things count as opinion or speculation?

FishingWithFredo: The author asks why the unhinged hate for Palin.

The answer's simple: Modern liberalism doesn't work without enemies to hate. It pretty much goes back to Clinton's impeachment, but mushroomed in Florida 2000.

Since then, the vitriol has been near constant; only the targets shift.

A classic example was John McCain. Heroic story of surviving a Vietnamese POW camp and refusing to be let go earlier than his comrades there; lifetime of public service; repeatedly demonstrating his willingness to work with Democrats on major stuff; demonstrated willingness to work on environmental issues, immigration reform, etc.

Maybe all that's not good enough for a Democrat to vote for the guy. But to respect him? It should have been unquestionable.

Instead McCain was tarred as "four more years of George W. Bush," a sentiment beyond ridiculous. I read Farklibs in here gleefully discuss McCain's ability as a pilot, attack him for his age and rationality, etc.

That's just one example. Obviously the way liberals went after Palin was grossly unfair, up to and including repeatedly involving her children in the smears.

"What if the same thing was done to Sasha and Malia?" The question's been asked to the hate-filled idiots countless times. Doesn't slow them down in the slightest.

There's a doctoral dissertation in psychology waiting to happen on liberal hate.

Yes, and it would be a dissertation on projection, because what happened to McCain was nothing compared to what you bastards did to Max Cleland and Kerry over their service.

So fark off.

Wow, I almost stopped reading when I got here:

Which brings me to a question I've been asking for months of my liberal friends: Why do so many on the left have such an unhinged hatred of this woman? Why do so many alleged feminists and female members of the mainstream media openly and gleefully despise Palin?

Because it was the same tired bad logic proposition that feminists are obligated to support ANY female.

But, I kept reading and got here:

Fine. I get that. But why Dowd and the feminists? With regard to The New York Times columnist, I asked a female friend of mine who happens to be a psychologist, what might prompt the anger? She mentioned a host of possibilities, but settled on one theory. That being that Dowd "may be threatened or envious of Palin... or both. As an aging but still attractive woman, Dowd may resent Palin's good looks. Further, as a single woman of a certain age, she may be envious that Palin has a husband, a family, and has carved out an accomplished political career."

Really?

"You're just jealous?" Now, I've had that tossed my way for criticizing everyone from Britney Spears to Kevin Smith, and you expect that sort of thing on imdb and Fark... but in an editorial on a political candidate in a prominent blog?

What came next?

"she makes more money than you do!"

"I don't see you being governor of somewhere!"

"you go run a state of your own and then you can criticize her!"

How do people who keep writing shiat like this completely ignore the fact that a VP candidate, and possibly a future candidate for the highest office of the land, couldn't name one farking magazine or newspaper?

She's an idiot.

I know there's a certain brand of retard out there who thinks real life is like the movies and thinks:

"Sarah Palin gots common sense like common folk... She ever bit as smart as me and I thank I'd be a purty good President 'cause I know what's what. I listen to Dave Ramsey ever'day and I could fix that durn economy!"

- but that's because they're idiots too. They're the worst kind of idiots... too dumb to know how dumb they are. They live in very small worlds, and they don't know HOW MUCH they don't know.

Hating the prospect of giving an idiot the launch keys is nothing but rational thinking.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to masturbate to that picture of her in her running attire.

Lenny_da_Hog: ...aaaaand

She just fired the state's Public Health Director of 20-years+ because of minor disagreements on abortion. (new window)

This also cost us the state's chief medical officer, as he quit when Sarah wanted him to take over the health director position.

The issue? Sarah wants parents to give permission for abortion. The scientists pointed out what's happened in other states -- the delay leads to more risky, late-term abortions.

Sarah couldn't handle science, per usual, and vindictively fired people. Again.

Bev and Jay were two of the more qualified people we've ever had working in those positions. If it goes on much longer like this there won't be anyone qualified to fill the director level positions at any department in the state. They'll have all been fired or told to resign.

furiousxgeorge: So, my conservative friends, what part of the Vanity Fair article was false?

I did find this little bit questionable:
...in 2006, as Palin was beginning her campaign for governor, a conservative columnist dug up e-mail messages showing that she too had conducted campaign business from her mayoral office. Confronted by the columnist, Palin acknowledged that she had erred. Then she turned around and issued a press release, demanding to know why the columnist was publishing smears.

When Andrew Halcro asked her to explain this during the gubernatorial debates she said, "It's not the same thing." Halcro told her using your publicly provided email address to campaign was the same as using your publicly provided email address to campaign, she turned away from him and asked the moderator to move on to the next question. I only remember this as distinctly as I do because it was at that point I realized she wasn't who/what she was trying to tell us all she was. She wasn't honest, she wasn't humble, and she certainly wasn't the great reformer she claimed to be. She was a tattletale and a hypocrite.

I'm a left-leaning guy, and though it would be wrong to say I'm afraid of Palin, I am afraid of what she represents. Dubyadumbass got elected (especially in 2004) because he was the candidate "you wanted to have a beer with" (alcoholism aside) and because the GOP was able to effectively mobilize the wacko fundies nationwide to vote for him. Palin represents this kind of stupid even more effectively than Dubya. "Africa is a country. PUTIN! The newspapers I read, what kind of a question is that? I said no thank you to that bridge to nowhere!" And so on and so fourth. Stupid is a force of nature, like solar storms or gamma-ray bursts or black holes. You'll just drive yourself crazy if you worry about it all the time, but every now and then the stars line up just right and the stupid makes a mess out of everything. That is why the prospect of Palin with any sort of national political power is worrying, because we've already seen what happens when someone even less stupid is president for eight years.

Or six months. Lofty (misguided) ideology and catch-phrase speeches don't make a leader. I'll reserve final judgement for another couple years, but so far it's been pretty much worse than I had thought.

FishingWithFredo: The answer's simple: Modern liberalism doesn't work without enemies to hate. It pretty much goes back to Clinton's impeachment, but mushroomed in Florida 2000.

If this isn't a textbook case of Rovian projection, I don't know what is. Liberalism needs enemies? For Christ's sake, Nixon had an enemies list. He actually called it his "enemies list". His entire Southern Strategy was based on the idea that by tying civil rights reform to the Democrats, the Republican Party could turn white male Christian Southerners into a reliable voting block. William F. Buckley helped start the anti-intellectual movement that has sense blossomed into a pro-ignorance cancer. The GOP spent the last 8 years claiming that anyone who opposed the war for any reason was a traitor to America who wanted the terrorists to win. George W. Bush ran for election on the philosophy that you only needed 50%+1 of the population to get behind you and that the rest of the country can fark off. The rabid base spent so much time demonizing Hispanics and killing any meaningful immigration reform that they have since driven the Hispanic population into the waiting arms of the Democrats. They have declared homosexuals abominations against God and have gone to enormous lengths to ensure that gays don't get the same civil rights as the rest of us. The 2008 Republican Convention hosted a Southern preacher who said that liberals want to kill babies, a multimillionaire former Governor of Massachusetts who decried East Coast Elitism, a former Mayor of New York City who decried Big City Values, and Moosefarker Barbie who mocked community organizers. In the six months since the election, the GOP leadership, Fox News, right-wing bloggers and right-wing talk radio have carried out a coordinated campaign to paint the President as a (black)atheist(black)socialist(bllack)Kenyan-born(black)Muslim(black)Jew-hating( black)anti-American(black) hate-monger. Numerous lone wolves have carried out acts of violence because they thought that Obama was stealing their guns or because too many babies were being killed or that Mexicans were stealing their jobs.

And liberals are the ones who need enemies?
