Banjo possessed similar speed, razor-sharp teeth and had three large slashing claws on each hand.

Similar speed to what...? They don't mention raptors for a few more paragraphs.

Probably named after this guy:

Banjo Paterson

A relevant quote from the man:

"In all museums throughout the world one may see plaster casts of footprints of weird animals, footprints preserved for posterity, not because the animals were particularly good of their sort, but because they had the luck to walk on the lava while it was cooling. There is just a faint hope that something of the same sort may happen to us."

People, PEOPLE! Come on, now.

Look at the other names - Clancy, Matilda...

There are a number of Australian folklor icons, (besides the Alps). These are among them.

"Banjo" is for Banjo Paterson. Who, by the way, wrote 'Waltzing Matilda', albeit slightly different than the one you normally hear. Paterson was a poet and writer.

"Clancy" was from a Paterson poem as well. The Clancy character was snagged a bit for the film "The Man from Snowy River", which was also a poem by Paterson which referred to Clancy of the Overflow.

No doubt the next dino will be "Saltbush".

Actually, the partially-discovered "Utah-raptor" is closer to the "velociraptor" in size and killing power. Utahraptor ostrommaysi is the scientific name; it was discovered in 1991, much later than "Jurassic Park."

Banjo Patterson, bush poet

Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson (17 February 1864 - 5 February 1941)[2] was a famous Australian bush poet, journalist and author. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong, New South Wales where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson's more notable poems include "Waltzing Matilda", "The Man from Snowy River" and "Clancy of the Overflow".

Which pissed me off SO MUCH, because Deinonychus has been my favourite dinosaur ever since the first time I read that book about Rhopa--who kept dying at the end no matter how often I reread it. So they took my favouritest dinosaur EVAR and DID IT WRONG--wrong name, whippy tail, arms held wrong, etc. The only thing that pissed me off more about that movie was the fact my mom wouldn't let me see it on the big screen. She said I was too little and I'd get scared.

I'd just turned nine and I'd already read the book like eleventy bajillion times--and for those who don't know, the book features two "on-screen" eviscerations plus several more non-intestinal instances of people being eaten alive with the reader getting a front-row seat. Oh, and one of the raptors get eviscerated and cannibalized because it eats a poisoned egg.

None of which made it onto the silver screen.

Phooey.

"Banjo" the "Australovenator"? Really Australia? Really?

Dinosaurs found in Canada include, "Triceratops horridus" "Tyrannosaurus rex", "Albertosaurus sarcophagus", "Velocirapterinae"... Names that suggest it is a terrible or fast lizard monster. Not something cuddly that will "Australovenate" you to a backdrop of either lovely Outback-oriented poetry or twangy string-plucking, depending on what connotation "Banjo" has for you...

The scary things in Jurassic Park were much more like Utahraptor.

Errr No. Partly because the Utahraptor hadn't been discovered when Crichton was writing the novel but also because everything in the novel is obviously based on Deinonychus. From their size to the location of the dig where they are digging up the 'Velociraptor'. It is pretty well known that the raptors in JP where based on Deinonychus but Crichton preferred the cooler sounding name Velociraptor. Though as Deinonychus and Velociraptor are both of the sub-family Velociraptorinae you could say this is all just being a bit picky.

Plumbledum 2009-07-03 07:00:26 AM
I had written him a letter which I had,

Hocknell hunting the Banjo

vertiaset: The scariest thing about the real velociraptor was not its size, it was relatively small, but what we were able to deduce of its cunning, intelligence and savagery from its fossil remains.

Think of a really mean, pissed off turkey with spikes for teeth and razors for claws that hunted in packs and ate its prey alive.

The velociraptors big claws were not sharp, they would cause puncture wounds.
I am not aware of any fossil evidence that they were cunning or hunted in packs. Also, they were not large so I don't think they could hold their prey down while they ate them alive.

/That sounds odd; 'I am going to keep eating him until he comes back to life!'

Kalashinator: Bexta: Ed Grubermann: Aulus: *pish*

T. Rex still rules.

If you like vultures, sure.

Or if you like hot love, definitely.

OR IF YOU'RE AN F-14 TOMCAT PILOT!!!!

One of my favorite things about that comic. Not only was he pretending to be a T-Rex, but a T-Rex fighter pilot. Farking awesome artwork.

Fluorescent Testicle: The name "Australovenator" sounds more suitable for a robot than a dinosaur.

I like those dinosaur "relative size" pics. The man has his hand raised as if to say "I, for one, welcome our reptilian overlords."

The thing that surprised ME the most is that they spell it "paleantology", not "paleontology". Is this an Aussie thing, or is the author unfamiliar with the Engleash language?

We need them to name one 'Calvinosaurus', and not some wuss plant eater.
