AirForceVet: Sounds like a reasonable request. Southern Democrats (Dixiecrats) were with the Democratic Party since before the Civil War. Dixiecrats finally left the party over Civil Rights legislation the liberal Democrats pushed, made their own party up, and promptly failed.

Now they're with the Republican Party, supporting "traditional marriage," "family values," and other spin terms to mask their true nature as WASPs: White, Angry, Southern Protestants.

A WASP is a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, actually. But whatever.

RemyDuron: The KKK was basically the militant arm of the Democratic party for a while.

IN THE SOUTH. But, in the South, there wasn't much competition. It was the Democratic party or nothing. In places where the parties were competitive, the KKK tended to be more Republican. William McKinley, Republican of Ohio, for example, was a KKK favorite.

Both of them want an apology? That's harsh.

HighOnCraic 2009-07-03 12:46:57 AM
These are the same people that argue that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. He actually supported Eisenhower--the last Republican to get elected while losing heavily in the Deep South--and stayed neutral in the Kennedy vs. Nixon election, and lambasted Republicans for nominating Goldwater.

As long as you stop reading history after the mid-Sixties, they have a point.

PascalsGhost 2009-07-03 12:47:13 AM
I never realized Dr. King was a Republican. That was enlightening.

Nah, Democrats are not racists.

After they, they do not have a president who used to attend a white-hating, anti-semitic church, Klansmen or activists who call New York "Hymie Town"

eraser8: In places where the parties were competitive, the KKK tended to be more Republican.

This is a point that deserves some elaboration. In the Northeast, especially, it was the Democratic party that was welcoming to immigrants, interested in international engagement and supportive of unions, positions the Klan vehemently opposed. So, in those areas, the KKK tended to favor Republicans. In the South, the KKK and the Democratic party were practically the same organization, more or less.

Actually, I like White, Angry, Southern Protestant better. White Anglo-Saxon is... not technically redundant, but it doesn't pack the same punch. It's a dumb saying anyway, so why not mess around with it?

A lot of people don't realize that the Democrats were the party of segregation up until the last 50-60 years...

It's really interesting how the pendulum shifts. The Republicans were once the more liberal of the two parties!

Stay Cool Babylon: Thing is, your post still makes a point. There is a valid claim of historical racism from the democratic party (it was all the rage, back then). What's retarded is anyone asking for a farking speech. We're now knee-deep in a bullshiat culture where organized, press-attended mea culpas are all the rage. Obama's apology would be on behalf of history, but it's still equally pointless.

This is nothing more than trying to get Democrats on tape apologizing so they can play the apology during the next election cycle. There is no other reason to ask for this. If you were truly this offended, you would read up on history and then understand why this was a bullshiat request.

Quote from the Heritage Foundation.

"Conservatives did not, and do not, agree with all of Dr. King's political positions. In particular, we think Dr. King looked too much to government, too much to the welfare state, and not sufficiently to entrepreneurial capitalism, to win economic opportunity for African-Americans. But there was a deeply conservative message throughout Dr. King's life and work, and we are fortunate today to have with us two distinguished speakers who will talk about the conservative virtues of Dr. King."

Republicans have limits on freedom.

Right, and as long as you ignore the last 50-60 years, the National Black Republican Association has a point. But seriously, should people ignore the fact that Northern, liberal, Rockefeller Republicans have lost power, and many high-level Southern Republicans embraced the whole "Lost Cause" mythology? Just look at Trent Lott--the guy successfully got Confederate President Jefferson Davis' citizenship posthumously restored, used Davis' old desk in his office, and claimed that the spirit of Jefferson Davis lives in the Republican Party platform.
