He was actually one of my favorites on SNL long before I ever heard of his politics. I think I'm the only one who liked him. Stuart Smaley wasn't that great, but his bits on Weekend Update were hilarious. And really, Weekend Update has always been the best part of SNL, IMO.

But he is a better comic writer than comic actor.

With Franken's humour it's hit or miss in those, and that's too bad because when he nails the joke in one of the books, you wince on behalf of its victim. But then I can recall, for example, that chapter in Lies that's just a list of things about America that are good or bad. The whole list, other than the "Getting Blacks the Vote: Good... for blacks! Just kidding again, good for Democrats!" joke, just feel lame, as if the whole thing was thrown together for 80-year-old curmudgeonly progressives.

A couple of spindly members of Dean's security team approach him uncertainly; he swings his arms and keeps shouting. It goes on for several minutes and seems to be veering toward actual violence. Dean, the media, the members of the audience: nobody knows what to do.

Considering it was Limbaugh and the Republican spin machine's politicizing of Paul Wellstone's funeral that angered and motivated Franken to move from political satirist to political activist, drinking the sweet, sweet tears and must taste extra refreshing.

Franken and then partner Tom Davis were the most prolific writers of SNL during the "glory years" (with no small help from certain South American chemical agents) and wrote most of the sketches from 75-79, so something tells me his comedy "style" has range. Of course, the notable exception might be when Carlin hosted the very first show which was a complete and total unfunny trainwreck.

Rush has made a living by being 100% wrong in such a way as to excite mouthbreathers. His formulaic program is designed to appeal to the lesser among us, and extract their money. His marketing is extremely effective, and has been copied over and over again.

Don't know much about Franken (never heard the heckler take-down story), and I have no idea how he will do as a senator, but it is good that the whole fiasco is over and Franken can get to work for his state... The gnashing of teeth, beating of chests, and general caterwauling from the usual suspects is certainly a bonus, too.

Franken is smart to do this. Restraint is something that some of those on the right are incapable of. I've lived in Germany for a year now and watching the whole presidential and various other campaigns from a distance has been both interesting and cringe-worthy. To see the Republican party fall to such a petty group of hypocritical, lying, selve serving assholes is both a shame and unforgivable. The federal German elections are in September and I'm very curious to see how election and especially the media here comport themselves.

From my P.O.V. Rush the big fat idiot is obsessed with Liberals. Everyday he spews venomous, incendiary lies. That's a lot more than a couple threads on Fark.

I think Franken is a boob but I'm not outraged he won but I understand the reaction by much of the right. Imagine the reaction of the left if Palin were to win a major election as say a Senator or even President. It would be about the same I would imagine.

Yes, they are almost the same. Franken attended Harvard College and graduated cum laude with a BA in Political Science, has written five New York Times best-selling books, served as a Fellow with Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, has served as a volunteer with the United Service Organizations since he first visited Kosovo in 1999, and has received seven Emmy nominations and three Emmy Awards for his television writing and production.

Palin was a mediocre beauty queen that went to 5 colleges in 6 years to get a BA in freaking journalism, was an incompetent mayor of an Alaskan small town that somehow got herself elected governor, and who can't even name what newspapers she reads.

But really, they are basically the same.

Don't underestimate the size of his under 40 audience. I know a few of them who think he belongs on Rushmore. Pointless to convince them otherwise, these are the same people who think FOX is a fair and balanced news provider.
