omris: Tatsumaki Senpuu-Kyaku!:
So, all you hard-working, ass-kissing 20-somethings - have fun getting laid off in your 40s so the company's stock can go up 1%!

My solution to this was to work for companies that don't have shareholders, like hospitals. I don't have an office job. I don't think I'd LIKE an office job. I work with weirdos in a lab. I have a rubber rat and a wall full of XKCD and lolcats at my desk. I don't make as much money, and if I can't get more grants my funding could dry up and I might have to change jobs, but we're actively encouraged, practically forced, to network. But there is no stock value. The majority of my success is dependent on my work and not surrounding myself with morons.

This

Plus I'll throw in my 2 cents. I'm 22 and the main reason I think most the younger generation gets a reputation for being lazy is because in most jobs there really isn't that much work to do. In almost every job I ever had I would spend 50-70% of time with nothing to do. Not because I didn't want to work but because whatever work I was given I finished within an hour or two. Then my bosses wouldn't have anything for me to do for the rest of the day, but I still had to fill my 8 hours. The exceptions were when I worked in a calling center and on assembly lines, and during the first month I was at the call center they didn't give us any work. Even now, I'm doing my second engineering internship and for the past week I've been sitting at my desk surfing the web because they have nothing for me to do. I wish they would give me some work, because I'm going insane reading things like fark comments for 8 hours a day.

I've cut lawns (had a buisness with 10 clients when I was 13 years old)
I've sold newspapers. Hell, I was a dishwasher in a restaurant (from 14 years old, made 1st line cook before I was 17), worked full time all thru college (payed my way thru college).
The only aid I had was was a Pell Grant.
I've been working very hard to better myself and my family since the early 80's.......and continuate every day.
/so as Frank would say I'm an ASShole, but you're an ASShole to.
//you punks will pay for me

therealpope: Pure BS. What freaking fantasy world was this article talking about? I don't know many (perhaps any) "over 55's" who are jetting across the globe as they sip champagne. In fact, I do know many "over 55's" who are working just as hard as they were at 25 so they can pay the bills.

Thank you.

Man, nothing cranks up the bitterness and stupidity like an inter-generational Fark flamewar.

1) Stereotypes are stupid.
2) Get out of the house, find a nice bar, settle down, a have a cold farking beer. Life is too short.

nygenxer 2009-07-03 07:25:04 AM
I notice that almost all the crooks responsible for our current financial crisis are baby boomers (or thereabouts), and that they are also the same generation of crooks that had crashed Wall Street 20 years ago, only 20 years older.

See anyone in their 30's in handcuffs like in the late 1980s?

No you haven't: we genxers have been denied access to the upper echelons of corporate hierarchy necessary to be in a position to perpetrate massive wholesale fraud, by the very same baby boomers who refuse to - and now because of their own shenanigans can't afford to - retire.

It is NOT that baby boomers or middle-aged people are evil, it's just that by the time one is middle aged, one should've reached a professional level where there are more readily-available opportunities to give in to the temptations of easy money.

All things being equal, there should be more genxers involved in today's scandals but there aren't (in fact there are NONE). It's not that genxers are inherently without sin, but rather that they both should be in positions of power in sufficient numbers but aren't.

Call it a generational glass ceiling if you will.

Are ALL baby boomers evil and are ALL baby boomers responsible for this mess?

NO and NO.

However, is this yet another shiat-stained hand-me-down from the baby boomer generation?

YES.

/Dear baby boomer trolls:
Yes I know Madoff (for example) was born in 1938 and thus misses being a boomer by seven years. If this is the best argument you have, please do not bother to comment. Thank you.

ZeroIdea:

As long is this country is going to continue to support those who won't work with resources from those who do, the spiral will continue.

We Boomers really don't mind working to support you Twentysomethings. We always knew we'd die on the job anyway. Besides, we enjoy work, having done it since we were children

.

El Chode: Farkin A Bubba: Yeah, except for the 24 / 7 worrying about those under 25 that we care about...

The Baby Boomers were the generation that wanted everything to be given to them for free, and now they're the ones that want to keep everything for themselves.

They're the ones who helped create our modern American "culture" and then so it was never surpassed, they're the ones who restrict it today as the heads of entertainment companies. That way they will always be known as the "greatest" and will keep the rest of us seeking their approval.

They're the ones who were able to succeed based solely on their free education, and now they are the ones who have created a market place where it costs most people to go into hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt just to be competitive in the marketplace. Low-income jobs that would provide on-the-job training now require individuals to pay for 2 years of training at a "school" with no accreditation just to become a glorified secretary.

They're the ones who wanted the government to back off and butt out, and now they're the ones passing laws monitoring what we do in our cars, what we put in our bodies, and what we can watch and listen to - even what words we can and cannot say.

I cannot wait until they all die off.

So, you can't trust anyone over 30? Wait a minute, I've heard that before...

Boomers, you have become your parents. Congrats.

Graduated at 22 with $40k in SL debt. Slung box around at FedEx during graveyard shift to pay for school and get bennies

Became a manager on salary, worked for basically $8/hr there but made 40k/yr. Do the math.

Got burned out so I quit and got hired doing inventory and driving a forklift for a wireless company. They sent me to school learning CMDA, 1xEVDO, ANRITSU and the A-L Base station. I now make a quite comfortable living and had 14 hours of overtime on my last 2-week check. We're expanding so there's lots of mileage and OT to be had.

Cream rises folks.

omris: Fair enough. But I will tell you that doing even a bad job well will help you out in the meantime. If you have to take a job at McDonalds while you look for something entry level in your field, it is in your best interests not to get fired from McDonalds. The percentage of people who couldn't get ANY job is pretty damn small. I worked multiple menial jobs to pay for grad school applications, and the contacts and references are useful. A lot of people shoot themselves in the foot by screwing up even the simplest of jobs.

Firstly I want to say that you are absolutely correct. Keeping and holding any job looks better than no job or getting fired from a very menial job like McDonalds.

However, the comment regarding people not being able to get any job I think doesn't hold water currently.

My father-in-law took early retirement from his job figuring he would just get a job at a place like WalMart or Home Depot or wherever to make up the small cut he took in order to retire sooner.

He finds that he is competing with other retirees, kids in High School, college graduates, recently laid off folks ranging in ages and social status. He's commented to me how bizarre it is to be filling out applications in line with everyone ranging from grandmothers in polyester slacks, teen girls in A&F outfits, immigrants who have their elementary school children filling out the English applications for them and 30-somethings in suits and ties.

The market isn't what it used to be. Even for the craptastic jobs.

He's not been able to find a job - note he has a solid military background, a college education and 40+ years in one job - in about eight months of solid looking. This is today's reality.

Brainsick: valencia: niknatas: You Generation-Y'ers needs to stop having panic attacks and go get another tattoo or nipple piercing. Generation-X is quietly infiltrating the corporate and government power structures.

Very soon you will be able to smoke pot legally and wear jeans at work without being hassled. Please be patient.

When we gain control, all we ask is that you please show up to work on time and for fark's sake do not allow your parents call us if you get passed up for a promotion. Because if you do ... we will send them a link to your blog.

-Cheers

I already have generation Xers telling me what to do at my job and they are farking biatches. If they aren't paid to do something, they won't do it. Worst work ethic I've ever seen at any job.

*GASP*

You...you mean they don't work for free? What selfish assholes.

Ever think maybe it's worth insisting you get paid for what you do at work?

In other words, relax. Things will get better because we will make it better.

/31

that wasn't really what I meant. they get paid on commission, so for every hair cut they do they get a certain percent of the revenue from that as their paycheck. they will make messes in the store and wait for someone else to clean it up because they are not paid to clean up their own messes. or they will have me do things that they are actually paid to do so they can eat lunch/make a phone call/etc without giving me any of the cut. so no, it's not just not doing a job they aren't even assigned to do, it's having common courtesy to the people underneath you.

Heh. This won't even get read in the midst of all this wharrgarrbl, but as a Gen X'er I have to just laugh my ass silly at both groups.

The boomers had huge dreams that they couldn't possibly make a reality for everyone. So, they made them a reality for themselves, leaving the upcoming generations to figure out how to cope. Big surprise. Sweet spot here is that they will soon die and I'll inherit their stuff. Woot!

On the other hand, we have the precious snowflake generation, who is so busy wondering why the world doesn't think they are as special as Mommy and Daddy said they were that they don't get that no one gives a shiat what they think.

Truth is, you are the biggest group of whiners yet to come down the pike and if you think the boomers made a mess, I can't even imagine what you group are gonna do. Every single one of you seems to think you should get to live like your parents do now, but without all that tedious mucking about working for a living and building it up. Thank God, I'll likely be dead before you guys can truly screw things up. Woot!

My generation. Ah yes. Well, I belong to that wonderful generation that doesn't give a crap about anything - even themselves. So to the younger folks, I say this: Start saving up now, because if you thought the boomers were bad, you're in for a hell of a surprise when we get control of the money. Cause where the boomers were just selfish, at least they cared about you. We really won't. We'll totally let you starve in the dark. (Note the awesome use of the word 'totally').
