I'm actually really happy to see Richie Evans name on that list.

That was a bit of a shocker.

Yep a NASCAR HoF..being built with almost $300 million taxpayer dollars in downtown Charlotte while they lay off 1200 school system employees. Just like the brand spanking new $280 mil coliseum built after voters said no by a 2-1 margin. (Mostly because we already had one that was only 10 yrs old.)

But if we gotta have a NASCAR HoF the inaugural class should be:
Richard Petty
Junior Johnson
Fireball Roberts
Ned Jarrett
Earnhardt (the one that could drive, that is)

Junior needs to stop drinking. He'd be a much better driver. Everyone knows this.

This is a great list. I'm inclined to go with Smokey Yunick rather than Earnhardt just because I'd like to see some crew/mechanic/car builder recognition. It's hard for me to say yes to Earnhardt without also saying yes to Pearson. Obviously they're both getting in eventually. This is just a question of the first five. Given that Smokey is not in the Top 25 I'd like to see it be your list. I really really hope Fireball is in the first group.

This is true. They need to maybe have separate categories for Drivers, Crew Chiefs/Mechanics, and a Builders category for team owners, propmters and people who've helped build the sport. Each year, pick three drivers, one mechanic and one builder--then every two years, throw in a journalist for a separate media award.

Smokey Yunick
Big Bill France
Lee Petty
Junior Johnson
Dale Earnhardt Sr.

No AJ Foyt? FAIL.

Rainbowtiedie had it right; too soon for Hendrick. Scratch his name and put Foyt on the list.

Dale Earnheart
Richard Petty
Fireball Roberts
Cale Yarborough
AJ Foyt or GTFO

Also, seriously? You guys expected some Drivers of Color to be on the ballot? If anything, they'll probably have a Negro wing to the HoF in a dark cellar, past the stairs that had gone out, in a disused bathroom with a sign on the door saying "Careful of the leopard, ya'll"

Lost Thought 00 2009-07-03 12:23:02 PM
You HAVE to induct Earnhardt in the first class, because otherwise the hall will go bankrupt. You need to induct people that will actually attract tourists.

AJ Foyt would belong in any Motorsports Hall of Fame. A NASCAR Hall of Fame? Not quite as much.

I'd put Pearson in before Dale Senior, though both are worthy.

Bill France Sr.
Richard Petty (200 wins, 7x champion)
Dale Earnhardt, Sr.(7X champion)
David Pearson (most wins amongst the three time champions)
?

The first three are givens, the fourth is likely, and the fifth is a complete toss up. (Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, Junior Johnson, Lee Petty) One of those drivers is likely to take the last spot and the rest should make it into the second class.

There was an article a few months back where they polled people in the sport and writers and asked who should be in the hall. Richard Petty was on ever single list including his own though he did said he wouldn't mind going in the second year if France Sr. went in alone the first year.

mikaloyd: If Petty Earnhardt and Roberts dont make it into the Hall od Fame the first year then they shouldnt bother having a hall of fame.

Yeah, no driver should make the hall of fame ahead of Roberts. Except perhaps the 15 retired drivers with more wins and the 20+ drivers with a championship. That's like saying you shouldn't have a Basketball Hall of Fame without Charles Barkley. Roberts is going in soon, but probably not until the third or fourth year. You're spot on with the first two though.

On further reflexion, Junior Johnson gets my last spot for his wins as a car owner.

I thought his TRAC stock car league fallout with NASCAR would keep him out of the HOF forever. That would have been interesting. Team based NASCAR type teams running Dodge Viper, Chevy Corvette and Rustangs.

Passive Aggressive Larry [TotalFark] 2009-07-03 02:19:11 PM
I am saddened by the lack of David Pearson popping up in a lot of farkers lists here. But I think part of the problem is that pretty much every one of these guys is worthy, and you just can't cut it down to 5 without some downright glaring omission. If you're just going for overall driving talent in the first class, then it should be Richard Petty, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, and Darrel Waltrip (since Jeff Gordon is not yet eligible). If you want to start from the beginning and get in a lot of the guys that built the sport up from nothing, then they should go with Lee Petty, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson, and Bill France Sr.

Farking Sweet 2009-07-03 02:23:24 PM

I think these five would make a decent start as far as inductees go:

Richard Petty
David Pearson
Dale Earnhardt
Jeff Gordon
Bill France

You'd have the two greatest in there (Pearson and Petty),the guy that did pretty well in the 80s(three championships and a bunch of wins) and a guy that dominated the 90s,especially the latter half, and to top it off,the founder of the sport.

As far as this decade goes,Jimmie Johnson can wait a few more years. And Brian France doesn't deserve a spot in for screwing everything up.

Say what you want about Dick Trickle, while he didn't have success in NASCAR,he was a pretty good short track driver. One of two guys to win the ASA National Tour and ARTGO championships in the same year, and he did it twice,consecutively(1984 and 1985).

/stock car history guy here

bluorangefyre 2009-07-03 04:59:01 PM
If you don't induct Dale Sr. and DW in the same class, what's the point? One pushed the other to win, and collectively they had six championships and a gazillion wins in the 1980s. But you can only induct five, so DW is out.

Same with Petty and Pearson... you can't induct one without the other. But you can induct both because they're the only two drivers with over 100 wins (unless Gordon lights a fire up his ass and pulls off a few more victories to get to 100).

So Earnhardt, Pearson and Petty. Obviously the fourth choice is a no-brainer: Big Bill France. Again, what's the point of an inaugural HoF class without inducting the founder of the sport?

Fifth choice would have to be Junior Johnson. No man has contributed to the sport more than him. He was a damn good racer, and a damn good car owner.

Honorable Mention: Ernie Elliott. One man out of Dawsonville, GA, could flat drive cars. Another could flat build engines the likes of which only Roush, Hendrick and Gibbs have today.

My understanding is that Foyt isn't eligible because he is still involved in the sport. Only people that were retired or dead were eligible.

leisurejack: My understanding is that Foyt isn't eligible because he is still involved in the sport. Only people that were retired or dead were eligible.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Foyt hasn't been involved in NASCAR for about 3 years, and why would Richard Petty (whose driver literally just won 2 weeks ago) still be nominated? Unless you just meant retired as drivers, but then you would still be about 15 years late on Foyt, and only then if you count his run in the inaugural Brickyard 400 as his last race before "retirement".

Also, Hendrick is nominated, and if you keep up with NASCAR at all you'd know he sure as hell isn't retired.

Problem is, there are so many NASCAR fans whose knowledge of the sport goes back only to 1993 or so, they'd cut otu many of the men who truly deserve to be in the HOF.

Some of these first nominees clearly could have waited until the next round.

I believe AJ isnt on the list because he only has 7 wins in 128 starts, granted his open wheel career was legendary theres others whove come into NASCAR on a limited basis and had great success (Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney come to mind)

As for the first class
The founder (Big Bill)
First Champion (Red Byron)
First Daytona 500 Winner (Lee Petty)
Possibly the sports greatest driver (Richard Petty or Dale Earnhardt or both)
And if needed i would say maybe Raymond Parks for being one of the first "teams" in NASCAR

Next year will be guys like Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, Glen Wood..etc
