I don't think Republicans understand how low the bar is for Obama.

After two terms of Bush, he could bone my mom and I would still feel OK about the vote I cast for him. I find his performance disappointing in some regards, but I have yet to see anything that that makes me come remotely close to wishing I had voted for McCain (or RON PAUL).

I suppose that could change but, really, if he finishes out his term with an economy better than he inherited and he manages to avoid involving us in a third war, I'll be a content citizen.

This was one of the compromises the President offered the republicans to get them on board. They said their usual NO NO NO NO, and it will likely be stricken from the final bill and it will pass in spite of them.

Yesterday, I saw one posit - honestly - that the Justice Department is continuing to pursue the prior administration's course on prosecuting terror suspects and arguing the same positions because the only way to undue Bush's policies was to argue in favor of them in court.

Hang On Voltaire: BobtheFascist: Huh. Just last night the news said he still opposed it.

This week, White House budget director Peter Orszag said taxing employer benefits was among several ideas that "most firmly should remain on the table." White House economic adviser Jason Furman called for an end to the so-called "employer exclusion" before he joined the administration. Meanwhile, some congressional Democrats say the White House has signaled that Obama would accept a tax on employer benefits as long as he didn't have to propose it himself. (new window)

However, we're only looking at the bill taxing a portion of health care benefits. From this article: (new window)
Last month, [Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max] Baucus [D-MT] said he did not support eliminating the exclusion but was eyeing a benefit cap. Experts have outlined two likely approaches: taxing health benefits for workers above a certain income level; or taxing benefits over a certain value, perhaps $14,000 a year.

In either case, it's going to tax employer-based health care (not government-given care), it's not going to tax everyone, and it's still not going to negatively impact those least able to afford care.

ragekage [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 07:02:24 PM
Well, that's because that was McCain's whole plan, which was moronic. Still, this is moronic- though I'm just pissed I have to pay taxes on the money I have to spend out of pocket to buy "private" health insurance. Costs me $5,000 of the $20,000 I make a year just for farking health insurance, and the Feddies say "Oop, not employer based, too farking bad, shiatface!"

There are some "conservatives" around here that provide intelligent commentary- Nabb is usually pretty good about that, though sometimes he gets all excited and creams in his jeans, as you saw here, over something to jump on Obama over- but sepuku is straight up knee jerkery, no intelligent conversation ever, which actually makes me think he's a DU troll, because all he's doing is further marginalizing and demonstrating what the right wing stands for today.

It's scary to think that libs could be that good. To create the perfect machine that never slips and never breaks character in it's quest to make the other side look bad. In nature we have sharks that are perfectly suited to one task in life, but I've never seen a man pull it off.

Hell, with how I feel about the Republican party, if I wasn't truly afraid of unchallenged one-party rule and I really wanted to invest the time into it, I could do it easy. The right-wing and "conservatives" have turned themselves into such a parody it'd be pretty easy to do. What wouldn't be easy is trying to live with yourself afterwards- I would have a hard time stomaching becoming something I hate- which is what confuses me about people like printboy, Phil Herup, sepuku, etc, etc, and makes me think they're particularly bitter DU trolls with copious amounts of free time.

Marcus Aurelius: The health insurance companies must die. This is an excellent way to start killing them.

Careful there, you might actually reveal the truth of the Obama health care plan.

And really, looking at the current government run health care plans, along with all the great bridges, schools, roads, and other things that are the pinnacle of efficiency and care who wouldn't want the government to run everything.

By the way, the only reason Obama or anyone else wants to provide health care is to have control over you. That's the only reason.

And this is why Republican whining over Bibartisanship is retarded. Every time Obama has offered a compromise so far, they attack him for being a hypocrite, or vote en masse against it.

This always happens. Noone is ever able to promise everything they promise during campaign time. Personally I'm happy because I had it pegged that Democrats would of destroyed Bush the second time around, but they someone managed to screw that up.

At any rate if ya didn't see a Democratic president, or that Obama would backtrack on some of his campaign policies, coming: Then you're a moron.

Here's what it comes down to:

You either pay the government for health care, or pay the IRS.

Link (new window)

Be sure to read that sentence that says fines will be collected through the IRS. So, if you opt out, that tax refund you're used to will be lighter by $1,000 or (likely) much more.

Or you can continue to pay for your current health insurance that you've had for years. Only you'll be paying more now that the government has their hands in it.

Don't kid yourself if you think it won't go up.

Think the DMV, only federal.

Or you can be poor or illegal and get it for free (all tracked by the IRS).

I'm not exactly looking forward to this.
