There's SO many Sci-fi shows out there to put on, yet they choose WWF to show instead.

Buck Rogers
V
Star Trek
STNG
DS9
Mantis
Heck, I'd even watch the old Superman series, even the black and white ones.

Stop having marathons and waisting them. Just have a regular programming guide.

And am I the only one who actually likes watching those farking horrific SciFi movies?
Me, my daughter and the wife do the Mystery Science Theater thing for two hours every week and have a ball.

Fano: Architecture Of Aggression: Firefly was canceled, get over it.

George W. won the election(s), get over it.

Barack Obama won the election, get over it.

facebook is public now, get over it.

the prequels are for kids, get over it.

it's a movie about transforming toys from the 80s, get over it.

"get over it" simply is not a reasonable/logical demand

"Get over it" as an argument is merely STFU in disguise. I dislike the term.

Get over it.

Looking at their crappy lineup recently, I'd rather watch reruns of "House" and "NCIS" on USA.

I now avoid the channel previously know as SciFi like Syfylys.

wildcardjack 2009-07-02 11:34:04 PM
You know what would really kill in the ratings right now?

A good classic science fiction channel.

We have 80 years of material to pick from. Yeah, lots of it isn't great, that's what MST3K was for.

Don't need to go running around "looking for ghosts".
People don't watch that. They point and laugh.

The second anyone talks about branding or brand this or that, you can rest assured they have no farking clue what to do. The fact they're changing the name on account of you can't trademark SciFi, shows how utterly clueless they are.

They are 100% correct that I will 'get over it'. I'll do it just like any other company that thinks a name change and an ad campaign can replace content, I'll go somewhere else.

While having a Sci-Fi channel would be nice, I can get all that want else where. So they are right, its no big deal for me.

Hatteras Jack 2009-07-03 12:33:23 AM
That is a good change because they sure as hell are not a science fiction channel.

Wrong_Intentions 2009-07-03 12:33:41 AM
I'll get over it. I got over their channel about ten years ago.

aurorous 2009-07-03 12:37:28 AM
I'll get over it just like I got over G4 ruining TechTV... oh wait I HAVEN'T.

It's not even the name change it's what it represents. At a time when science fiction is hotter than it's ever been... and at a time when basic cable Drama's are flourishing syfy is reversing away from these things and dedicating itself to metric tons of retarded reality shows and monster movies in the tradition of Ed Wood.

It's real easy to keep my commitment to never watch G4 because they have nothing worth watching. I can say the exact same thing about "syfy"

/going to watch reruns of burn notice the tivo has been recording all day
//Have no idea whats on "syfy" right now... does it matter?

I think it's quite the opposite. They want reality shows, just like every other basic cable channel. They want to get away from the "SciFi" ghetto, so they can eventually just show whatever they want, regardless of genre or common sense.

WFern: Does anyone even watch SciFi any longer? I used to be obsessed back when they aired a lot of great older shows (Quantum Leap, The Incredible Hulk, etc). Now I only catch the odd Twilight Zone and even that's rare.

They've even f*cked up the previously unf*ckuppable holiday weekend Twilight Zone Marathon. The classic Zones don't start playing until Saturday. Thursday thru Friday are filled with the vastly inferior "New Twilight Zone", a mostly terrible series that no one (I hope) had any interest in seeing again.

At this point, it's like they're practically daring people to keep watching their channel. It's a really odd strategy.

"There's always a resistance to change," Howe added. "But in a few years, no one will notice the difference."

Yeah, that'll prove prophetic when they realize they have no viewers in a few years...

Question: Didn't this channel start out as the "Science Fiction Channel"?

If not.. some upstart should crank up the "Science Fiction Channel." Actual sci-fi programming, with no Saturday night C-movies shot on a $400K budget, no farking wrestling, no farking ghost hunters.

I don't care how far back they go.. Christ, run old episodes of Manimal, for all I care. Just don't be so farking embarrassed by your genre that you change your name.

I'll admit, Ghost Hunters is a guilty pleasure of mine. I realize that the things they catch are tricks of our human eyes and ears, designed to notice patterns that look and sound like people and speech. That the entire idea of ghosts, spiritual energy, and residual hauntings are completely implausible and silly.

But damned if what they "catch" isn't creepy enough to give me goosebumps at times.

Black Testudo [TotalFark] 2009-07-03 01:48:34 AM
The network said yesterday it will also develop a remake of 1988 film "Alien Nation," about a veteran cop and his extraterrestrial partner.

"It's one of those timeless movies that we've looked at for several years, trying to figure how to make it relevant for a new generation," Howe said.

If it's timeless why the fark do you have to remake it?

Bonnie Hammer thought of a way to blame all the discrimination on men.

Mark my words: Either the alien or the human cop will be a woman. And she will have an asshole ex-husband or a misogynistic boss. Lifetimey-ness has infested Syfy.

They're probably squatting on the rights to "The Science Fiction Channel" to prevent just that.

I agree -- I'd love for there to be a channel devoted solely to science fiction. I'd even enjoy one that was science fiction, horror, and (real) fantasy (not Warehouse 13) all together, as long as there was a dedication to the kind of programming genre lovers like: the smart kind.

I like Eureka, and I'm looking forward to Caprica. I'll give Stargate Universe a try (although I never really liked the other two SG series), and I'm interested in seeing what they'll do with to Alien Nation (although my hopes are not high).

Whatever I watch, though, I'll be DVRing all of it so I can flick through the commercials and avoid all the SyFy promos they'll be running.

Guntram Shatterhand 2009-07-03 02:12:18 AM
To be fair, I did like the Nashville Network. It was cheesy as all hell, but cable needs a place for Dukes of Hazzard, Alice, Matt Houston, and shiat like that. There's no problem with niche programming because there's always something weird on.

And Sci-Fi has more issues than a name change. They used to be creative while working on the cheap with their old archive shows and older movies. Now, they just don't care. The network is basically USA2 and they don't have the heart to simply give up the ruse.

In a way, it's worse than the TechTV incident. G4 at least has a few shows from TechTV still on. Sci-Fi just likes paying for a season, dumping the show, and then rerunning it so they don't have to bother doing anything constructive. Rinse and repeat. Galactica was just a fluke. All those godawful monster movies Sci-Fi airs now is a wily cost-cutting measure: they don't cost much, they fill up giant spans of time, and there's no real effort involved after the initial purchase. The rebranding is just selling us more shiat until they either get real competition or simply turn it into something else and admit that nobody wants to watch another TBS/TNT clone.

zunkus 2009-07-03 02:27:58 AM
voran: Considering all that SciFi has left is Eureka, they damn well better be careful with risktaking.

Seriously, that and the occasional episode of Doctor Who are the only things on that pile of shiat worth my time.

belowner 2009-07-03 02:36:22 AM
Bonnie "Farking Cooooooooooooontstick" Hammer ruined that goddamn channel. It wasn't enough to have wrestling on seven other cable channels, she had to shoehorn in wrestling night, often several nights in a row, for an artificial ratings gain. On a science-fiction channel.

Her move to dump series for shiatacular made for TV movies starring old soap opera stars from the 80's probably saved some money initially, but there's no residual value. I do not want to watch "BOA vs. PYTHON" once, much less repeatedly.

How can you tell Bonnie Hammer failed at her job?

A) I quit watching the channel altogether, which really isn't a big loss in the overall scheme of things. I'm sure wrestling fans will make up for my absence. BUT:

B) I know who this woman is. The channel changed so drastically and for the worse that I took the time to find out what farking brainiac was behind the changes. I'm not the only one. At least two other people here bothered to find out who was squeezing out the mile long turd snake that Sci-Fi became.

Re-branding the name is farking minor compared to what she did. She ruined the whole product. Calling it something different isn't going to change the fact that it's shiat.

And why is is shiat? BONNIE HAMMER. Memorize the name. In three years you're going to wonder why network TV keeps showing YouTube quality monster movies, and I guarantee she's going to be the person behind it. NBC keeps promoting her.

I'm pretty sure the last time I watched that channel was that Wizard of Oz remake with Zooey. It was pretty good, but the frequent and extremely repetitive advertising was VERY annoying!

(really, if you're going to run an ad for a moble phone company, don't do it twice per break, with a break every 10 minutes!)

Spanky McLapdance 2009-07-03 05:59:10 AM
I believe it's pronounced Schahfweh from the German Schahfweinenpantzenpischcaschuppentrein or to piss a whole load of cash on rebranding and a probably substantial ad campaign rather than buying shows (even re-runs which could be cheap) that ppl actually want to watch.

The current BBC America ads make it sound like SciFi Channel lost the rights to Doctor Who. So if Caprica sucks, I will not be watching SciFi Channel.

/The BG mini series was the first time I had watched that channel for more than 5 minutes since it went on air. And I love science fiction.

theorellior 2009-07-03 11:59:59 AM
I hadn't watched SyFy in quite a while, so I wasn't aware of the volume of "Mansquito" currently taking up cable bandwidth.

I think SyFy will get over the rebranding when it goes under from lack of viewership.

So, for all the Stargate / Atlantis / Whatever show - for a sci-fi geek who could never get into the shows because there was no good starting point, what season/show is a good place to start from with DVDs or whatever?

Pxtl: So, for all the Stargate / Atlantis / Whatever show - for a sci-fi geek who could never get into the shows because there was no good starting point, what season/show is a good place to start from with DVDs or whatever?

For StarGate SG-1, start at season 1, or better yet, start with the original movie. There were some continuity changes between the movie and the series (mostly with the origin of Ra, and what his natural form looks like), but it picks up from there. IMO, the first season or two are very much like Star Trek, with a planet of the week scenario, and then it later becomes more focused the war with the Goa'uld and becomes more serialized. Seasons 9 and 10 are a bit weaker as some major characters can switched around, and they had to find entirely new villains, mostly because SciFi kept changing their mind on whether or not they were going to renew the series.
While you could start later, there are continuing plot points starting from the movie and the first episodes through the first 4 seasons and beyond, and honestly, there really weren't many bad episodes (I watched the first 8 seasons while taking care of bottle feedings and colic with the my daughter).

StarGate Atlantis starts immediately following the season 8 premiere of SG-1. After that the two series are mostly independent, but they have the occasional cross over episode and some stuff from SG1 show up in Atlantis.

Stargate Universe sounds like it will be completely indepdent story wise so that you could watch it without having seen the first two series and wouldn't have any issues, although it will reference the mythology and history of the Ancients established in the previous series. It sounds like it might also have a slightly less military angle to it and from the descriptions sounds sort of like ST:Voyager but with more grit, although maybe not as much as BSG.

Season 1

/and make sure you get the uncensored version, SG-1 was originally on showtime, so there are some nice boobies in the initial episodes.

/And then watch to see if you can tell where it made the switch to the Sci-Fi channel.
