Sci-Fi executives knew people weren't going to immediately like their rebranding, but they're hoping viewers will come to accept it.

No. They will never forget.

I hate rebranding because it's a prime example of marketing waste. I hate marketing and that I have to pay for it with my purchases.

Gatorade is good for quenching my thirst? Just tell me why, don't rename it 'G' and drop millions on endorsements.

Same with Nike and others. Is their stuff any good? I have no idea (well I do, Nike shoes are flimsy sh*t, their clothes are OK) but they drop tons of cash on famous people to tell me it is.

Agreed! Pretty ridiculous move IMHO.

Next Tuesday, the 16-year-old network will officially change its name to Syfy to signify a new direction in its programming.

Ummm....sounds like less SciFi and, well, god only knows what.

/Is it pronounced 'SciFi' or 'SeeFee';)

Rebranding? That we'll get over. Losing BSG and having nothing else worth watching? Harder to overcome.

Makh [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 07:12:18 PM
If they had the best shows, we wouldn't care what it was called.

GreenAdder [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 07:13:52 PM
I wonder if they'll get over the lack of viewers.

Yes, losing BSG was terrible:(

I'm still getting over SG Atlantis. Loved the show! Bonus: Sheppard and Ronon = major eye candy for this girl!
I'm still sure not about SG Universe...guess we'll see.

/Anyone else remember the original SciFi ad (going way back on this)? Very cool.
//I looked for a video of it, can't find one.

shanrick [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 07:46:11 PM
What they really need to do is create a Science Fiction channel.

I can't remember the last time I even watched that channel.

The people who were in charge of SGA can suck my taint region. They seem to have nothing but contempt for their audience. I'll pass on SGU.

/not over it

Gotta agree with you there. They really don't give a shiat for the fans. SGA still had so much potential. I'll never understand it.

I had the opportunity of meeting David Hewlett during the first season. He seemed as excited about the show as the fans. He's such a cool guy and a pleasure to chat with.

/Can't wait for the SGA movie

I'm sure they think SciFi fans will forgive them if only they continue to make more sequels to mansquito.

Once again they have proven to the world that they are a part of NBC/Universal/GE.

No, nobody likes the SyFy name. And yes, the first thing it makes me think of is syphilis.

I_Approve_Of_This_Message 2009-07-02 08:52:08 PM
Does this mean no more shows about ghost hunters and/or giant grasshoppers?

WFern 2009-07-02 08:52:29 PM
Does anyone even watch SciFi any longer? I used to be obsessed back when they aired a lot of great older shows (Quantum Leap, The Incredible Hulk, etc). Now I only catch the odd Twilight Zone and even that's rare.

Architecture Of Aggression 2009-07-02 08:54:04 PM
Firefly was canceled, get over it.

George W. won the election(s), get over it.

Barack Obama won the election, get over it.

facebook is public now, get over it.

the prequels are for kids, get over it.

it's a movie about transforming toys from the 80s, get over it.

"get over it" simply is not a reasonable/logical demand

Shadowknight [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-07-02 08:55:37 PM
I think it's more that once you are finished with Eureka, you guys have nothing compelling enough to be worth watching. Your attempt at rebranding is just rubbing salt in the wound to Sci-Fi fans that want something a little more substantial than Mansquito.

The people in government, and corporations, that are tasked with making actual decisions are brutally incompetent, self-serving morons, incapable of seeing past the end of their coke-coated noses.

They should all be humanely destroyed (or at least beaten and fired - but I'm sure they would eventually get over it).

"Get over it" as an argument is merely STFU in disguise. I dislike the term.

Considering all that SciFi has left is Eureka, they damn well better be careful with risktaking.

bungle_jr 2009-07-02 09:17:04 PM
so, this means they'll show all these shows about fixing up houses, shopping for houses, and some sort of cook-off challenge show?

you know, like THE LEARNING CHANNEL used to show educational programs, now they're called TLC and they show all those things...just like hgtv and diy and a few other channels

KushanMadman [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 09:18:29 PM

Now would be the perfect time for a network to come out calling themselves SciFi and take market share.

This. Ever time I see their new brand for the rest of my life, I will associate it with "morons with contempt for their audience." Nice branching douches.

rmatthewware 2009-07-02 09:27:43 PM
I got over it a long time ago. They've cancelled most of the good shows. Here, I've got a game plan for them to bring back viewers, that doesn't include rebranding:

Knock off all the reality shows.

Find some good scifi/fantasy shows and put them in rerun. Go to the UK if you have to.

Come up with enough first run shows to have a primetime lineup. Even if it is only for Friday-Sunday.

Don't ever film an original movie again. Ever.

Do come up with TV movies based on previous series like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and Farscape.

The Nashville Network, primarily showing Dukes of Hazzard and country music type stuff including old Hee-Haw reruns.

They're done I think. I went from watching 5-6 hours of TV on that channel a week to 0 in about a year and a half.

That's the only show I'll watch on there any more.

Okay, sometimes I watch Ghost Hunters, but that show would be a lot better with positron gliders.

SYFY must stand for something.

Sad yarns for you?

Oh, so you don't want to watch 14 hours of asteroid films in a row each Saturday?

How hard is it to get an old classic Sci-Fi film on that channel? TCM shows better Sci-Fi.

rmatthewware: Do come up with TV movies based on previous series like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and Farscape.

They could also probably pick up and restart old series that got canceled. Real old ones that would be cheap.

Like

Odyssey 5
Daybreak
Dead Like Me
Space: Above and Beyond
Starlost, based on the original script
A new Stargate, focusing more on the war with the gaould.

/It also wouldn't be bad if they started a new B5, or hell, remaster the old B5 with updated 3D models.

They are doing the same thing to Cartoon Network by putting in kid's "reality" shows which are obviously scripted because they would never put childrenz in dangers.

Shrugging Atlas 2009-07-02 10:06:43 PM
Now that they've changed the name, can someone start up a SciFi channel that actually focuses on Science Fiction and not "Mansquito II: Return of the Fail?"

lordargent 2009-07-02 10:10:38 PM
Ohh, and

Kindred: The Embraced (but more true to the source material)

And while you're at it, show some old movies that never get any airtime anymore.

Like, Cast a Deadly Spell*

/not available on DVD, and I have never personally owned a VCR, screw that.

I really don't care what they call themselves, their programming choices drove me away years ago. So if they are called Sci-Fi, SyFy or Larks Vomit makes no difference. The management thinks that a name change will solve their ratings problems, but without decent shows, then Poo by any other name is still Sh*t.

There was a brief period where they were The National Network between the times when they were The Nashville Network and Spike as well.

I saw a few eps of Odyssey 5. I'd love to see a full series of it. Why is it that the Canadians and the UK come up with better scifi shows than us?

Because their network execs aren't all MBAs who hate science fiction.

Bonnie Hammer and her successor at SciFi need to DIAF.
