FMLYHM: Oh, Gwenyth Paltrow said something? Who gives a fark?

WHO THE HELL IS GWENYTH PALTROW?!?!

Your_Huckleberry [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 07:10:34 PM
MrSteve007: Compared to Spain - the US does suck.

Oh, you just like that giant solar tower thing they have... Sahara just did not do that thing justice.

CitizenTed

Me? Bitter about living in a WalMart cargo shorts whaargarbl paradise? No.

Dude, it's hard to beat a good pair of cheap cargo shorts.

I'd still donkey punch her... But the punch would be more to shut her the hell up.

CitizenTed: I traveled around Europe. Here's my take:
Pro's:
- Better educated, healthier, attractive populace
- More thoughtful civic design
- More developed sense of community
- More thoughtful resource management
- Significantly better (fantastic) public transit systems
- Less emphasis on commercialism
- Less polarized politics

Con's:
- Won't allow me to emigrate legally unless I marry a local

There you have it.

/Me? Bitter about living in a WalMart cargo shorts whaargarbl paradise? No.

Ok, I've got to take up a couple of points. After living in the Baltics and traveling every chance I got here is my take on your take.

CitizenTed: - Better educated, healthier, attractive populace

They are big on walking over there. That helps alot. Few own cars and cabs are costly.

CitizenTed: - More thoughtful civic design

BULL! Were you ever sober over there?!? Most major towns were built hundreds of years ago and their main focus was foot traffic and sometimes a cart. Many were built to make invading forces kill themselves rather then find the center of the city!

CitizenTed: - More developed sense of community

Does that mean they treat each other well and shiat on everyone else? For the most part service in Germany, Austria, Lithuania and Latvia sucks. You're lucky to get a refill on anything and if the waiter comes by your table more then 3 times the entire time you're lucky.

CitizenTed: - More thoughtful resource management

Sure

CitizenTed: - Significantly better (fantastic) public transit systems

OH HELL YEAH. In countries or between countries the rail system in Germany is the absolute best.

CitizenTed: - Less emphasis on commercialism

I dont know about that. The ladies like the Italian designers no matter where you go. I may have to say its a tie in that dept

CitizenTed: - Less polarized politics

Depends on where and when you are there. Around election times in certain countries he can get really heated. But during the bulk of the year it really does not matter to them. So I could see you believe that if you passed through quickly and at the right time.

WhileAmericaBurns: So the knock against us is we're only 200 years old? Stupid us, why couldn't we have been established a thousand years earlier?!

Well, there were several civilizations here 1000 years ago, but they were Jesus-less, and needed help.

Wow...If the buildings weren't a lot older in Europe, and the lifestyle in many European countries wasn't much mellower than in the US, I'd be totally wicked offended.

She's right.

marsgwar 2009-07-02 07:18:52 PM
There are plenty of places in America where you can live a relaxed lifestyle. I hate it when people describe America as New York. She's probably too good to step outside the city and see what else there is. And when you name your kid after fruit I can't really take anything you say seriously.

Fonaibung 2009-07-02 07:19:48 PM
I'm seriously giggling over here about how many people are carrying forward the "Gwenyth" typo. It's Gwyneth!

There was nothing wrong with what she had to say. I agree 100%. I mean we do have a whole lotta suck in the U.S., mostly from people who would write articles like this one.

If you've ever been at a gathering and chanted USA, USA, USA, yeah you're part of the farking problem.

Yeah, their dedication to solar power is cool, but of the couple times I've been there, one of the foremost I recall was being able to order alcohol in a restaurant at age 15 and no one caring.

That, and the beautiful, nice people, pleasant weather, well laid out cities with all forms of activity all night, wonderful beaches and the afternoon siestas also contribute to my love of Spain.

/mmm, craving some sangria right now

People consider that "taking a dump" on the US? REALLY? talk about butthurt...

RemyDuron 2009-07-02 07:31:25 PM
She made the same observations every single American who isn't a blithering nationalistic retard makes after spending an extended time in Spain, or really most anywhere in Europe.

How is it a shiat on the US to say that our buildings are newer (they are) and we have a less extensive history as a country(we do)? Anyone who I've ever met who spent time in Spain, and especially those who worked in Spain, will tell you they are less obsessive about work and productivity and more willing to just leave work and go have fun if they feel like it, and quite likely no one will care.

I spent a month living in Vernon, France. You know what "open late" means in France? 9 pm. Most places close around 5 or 6 because everyone wants to go home and have a long, nice dinner. Most places that are not chains (and plenty that are) are closed two, three, or more days a week. The culture's attitude toward work is totally different than America's. Sometimes it's annoying (I'm used to 24 hour restaurants and grocery stores), sometimes it's cool (because laid back people are always cooler to be around), but it is definitely different.

Linux_Yes [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 07:33:05 PM
well, she's just being honest.

the single greatest theft of Middle Class America by the wealthiest 1 or 2% was just pulled off in the last year and i admire her for being upfront and speaking her mind in the "land of the Free" where so many are fearful of speaking their minds.

i'm old school and i remember how it used to be and how it is now.

kudos to Paltrow.

Subby's not the only one to blame, though. It takes a dumbfark submitter whoring for greenlights to submit an utterly moronic article with an equally moronic headline and a dumbfark admin to actually greenlight that crap.

loonatic112358: Nabb1: Oh, for crying out loud, what she said about buildings in the US versus Europe is demonstrably true, and one of the things I actually enjoy about traveling there. The second part was mainly about New York City, and I happen to agree with her on that, too.

maybe she should visit places in the states other then new york and L.A.

maybe go visit places with buildings that date back from the colonial days

I suggest sge go wander the streets of New Orleans, alone and after dark

Yeah, our 200 years of history (not counting the Native Americans, because all most no one learns about or appreciates their history anyway) are totally equal to the thousands of years of history in most European countries.

Our country and culture is relatively new, no need to have a complex about it.

You mean, if the situation was different, would it be different?

And to actually answer your question, which I am reluctant to do because your name is "WhileAmericaBurns", no, not really, because it's farking true. It's not insulting to say the Spanish have a longer history and a more laid back attitude, on average, than us. Would it be a shiat on Spain if a Spaniard came here and said she admired our work ethic and our clean, modern looking buildings and our countries sense of youth and vigor?

I don't think so. All Paltrow is saying is A. Things are different in Spain and B. she likes it there. Those are not shiatting on America. Or is no one allowed to prefer living in another country, or enjoy it more than America?

Being patriotic and proud of one's country, in itself, is not a problem.

Never been to Spain myself, my one chance to visit (so far) was eliminated by the first Gulf War. But I have read/seen lots a good stuff on the country. I'd like to go someday, just like I'd like to return to Hong Kong.

No, you would have to be a blithering nationalistic retard to not see that Spain has more history and their culture is not laid back. Which is exactly what I implied in my original post.

OK, what if that doesn't matter to someone? Just because their personal preferences don't match yours is no reason to call them a retard.

deadsanta 2009-07-02 07:57:57 PM
I doubt there's any building in Spain older than the 4th century A.D., putting Gwennyth Paltrow off by a measly 800 years or so. In fact I'd bet most of the architecture in Spain is on the order of 400-500 years old, tops, for the oldest buildings, given the wars, invasions and population movements of the last 2000 years on the Iberian peninsula.

I am extremely offended by Gwenyth Paltrow's statements.

They conflict with my view that the United States is superior to every other country in the world in every possible way.

I can only assume that she must be some sort of communist, and is probably in league with Satan. Burn the witch!

WhileAmericaBurns: Is no one allowed to enjoy America more than other countries without being called a blithering nationalistic retard?

Yes they can. It isn't enjoying your own country more or being patriotic that makes you a blithering nationalistic retard it is a)how ignorant you make yourself look in the process and b)how you chose to express said pride and patriotism.

I find immigrants tend to be able to better express their pride in their new country then most citizens because they chose to live there and become citizens. Craig Furgeson expressing why he loves being an American for instance, my GF and her family on why they love being Canadian (they just became citizens yesterday), etc. Of course many native-born citizens do it well also.

First, I am disappointed in Subby and the Arthur of that article. I was expecting a tirade about how the U.S. isn't Socialistic enough or our lack of Universal Healthcare, not using the Metric System or some other bullshiat.

Secondly, when it comes to the building thing, we've been a country for less than 300 years and if she wants old ass buildings, in Colorado there are ruins of ancient pueblos that go back even further than 500 B.C. that are carved into the farking mountain side.

srhp29 2009-07-02 08:24:09 PM
Not really a slam that I read in that quote...but whatever.

I think she needs to pay more attention if she thinks an "old" building here is 17 years old though.

And, hey Gwyneth, we apologize that we didn't steal this country from the natives until only a few hundred years ago.

It's a wonder there are not more 1,000 year old buildings in a country that only began building less than half that duration of time ago.
