No, no. The blue guy is from Kentucky, (^)not Pennsyltucky. Though I can see how you'd get confused.

WTF Indeed: Wait? It tipped over? About Damned Time! That damned porta john shot my cousin over a hog dispute.

/Lives in York County

You're thinking of Porta, John. And yes, he was tipped over by a bunch of college kids driving through.

/No I don't live in Central PA.
//I live in Southeast PA.
///It's like a time machine.

Yeh....I hate too type but you're correct. My wife is from Tx and cant understand how Pa is like the center of the universe

I've visited PA on occasion. I've never been further than Pittsburgh. I hate it there. It's like a whole bunch of hillbillies somehow got ahold of a major urban center.

I'm a recent transplant to Carlisle, I kind of like it here. Nice scenery and fishing. I grew up in rural Indiana, though, so country folk don't scare me.

I went to high school in Carlisle, so I'm getting a kick out of this....

Adolf Oliver Nipples: abmoraz: Sid_6.7: albo: cumberland county, i forgot. but its soul is perry county

My grandmother lives in Cambria county, in Emeigh. Central PA is depressing as hell to visit. It's like they stopped maintaining almost everything after the 50's, except the rare food franchise next to the interstate.

There are no interstate's in Cambria County.

...and there's no apostrophe in "interstates".

It's amazing how many Farkers live within a half hour of Harrisburg. Think a Fark party is long overdue.

Not anymore. The I99 extension is complete (all but the on/off ramps) to I80. There's a section of 1 lane in each direction for about 1/4 mile between the I80 and I99 ramps. You can bypass all of Bellefonte and just glide into State College.

The biggest news of all in Pennsylvania apparently is that they fought for the North. Amusing to see rednecks waving around a confederate flag in Erie county when i go to visit the family.

Harrisburg isn't much better. A bunch of copperheads greeted a Union regiment with jeers when they arrived to defend it against Lee's northward march. Ironic too since that unit was commanded by a Lebanon county iron-master, even though it was Jersey boys ;)

/embarassed that so much of my family was spawned in that god-forsaken place.

accujimmy 2009-07-02 01:38:09 PM
The Icelander: accujimmy: As far as I'm concerned, the only central PA counties are ones that share a border with CENTRE county. Aftre that you become western, south central, eastern, or north central. Discussion is futile, I have won with my superior logic.

The PA DEP disagrees:

I've seen that map. It's a heresy. NO ONE who lives here refers to Centre county as Northcentral, so it has no validity at all.

The Icelander: Selkhit: *unless you're heading toward State College.

Even State College is about 10 miles from I-80. And you have to drive through Bellefonte to get there.

So you haven't been here in a while eh? We have a nifty bypass whereby you circumnavigate Bellefonte on I-99. Ever since the sweet German restaurant next to the trout stream burned down a few years ago there is no longer a reason to go to Bellefonte.

I wonder if the mennonites around here get mad at the mexicans for not speaking german. I'm also a little confused as to why the mennonites down the road are black. There's some weird stuff going on around here.

bbcard1 2009-07-02 01:40:26 PM
This is actually a topic which I can contribute some useful information based on personal experience.

If you ram a portajohn with your truck/suv it does a splendid job of tipping, but take care it you have a Reece hitch (and what self respecting countryboy would not). The Reece hitch can puncture the fiberglass body of the portajohn and leave it following you, at least for a while. Should that happen, you can easily end up with blend of doody, chemicals and toilet paper wrapped around the hitch.

And no matter how fun it sounds like, resist rolling the toilet across the field. You will inevitably end up shiatcovered and have to ride in the back of the truck.

BTDT...

So maybe there are some good ol' rednecks here in Pennsylvania. I stand corrected.

/I thought that kind of shiat only happened in Texas and West Virginia

Evidently a Porta John tipping is a news worthy event in Central Pennsylvaina on Fark.

Vantango84 2009-07-02 01:47:23 PM
I'm a proponent of "Central Pa" being based on proximity to Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster.

I live in Lebanon, so on the front of weird shiat in Central Pa, go to Anville and hang out. You get the "thugs" from Lebanon mixing in with the Rednecks from the nearby farms. It's the weirdest cultural collision point around here.

evaned 2009-07-02 01:47:53 PM
As someone who grew up in State College, I'm going to assume that most of your "Central PA sucks" comments exclude State College, or I take exception. ;-) It's not exactly the most exciting place around, but in other respects it's actually pretty nice.

The Icelander: Or get off of I-80 at pretty much anywhere along its length.

I love how desolate I-80 is within PA. I mean... there's basically nothing. State College is possibly the biggest thing within 30 miles of I-80 along the entire length. In Ohio, there's one of those "miles to destinations" sign along I-80 just before the border... it consists of the distance to some PA route just across the border (5 miles or something), the distance to I-79 (which goes north to Erie and south to Pittsburgh; distance: somewhere like 30-50 miles), and New York City (distance: 460 miles or so).

The Icelander: Even State College is about 10 miles from I-80. And you have to drive through Bellefonte to get there.

That's not true any more... they put in a nice bypass a couple years ago. It's now 4-lane highway, virtually all limited access, from I-80 right to State College.

You can get from I-80 to the PA turnpike passing by State College and Altoona without leaving limited access highway now, except for half a mile or so when getting off I-80 and getting on the turnpike. (I think that's the case; it's at least mostly true. It's been a while since I drove that segment.)

Some years back (around 2000 IIRC) a DART bus driver was the victim of a porta-potty-tipping in Wilmington Delaware. He ended up paralyzed from the waist down as a result of his injuries. Kids who did it were never caught, IIRC.

As someone who grew up in Wilkes-Barre, went to college in Carlisle, and later moved to Pittsburgh, I can affirm that central Pa is the deadest part of the state.

And north central isn't very lively either.

/Carlisle is the northernmost town in the American South.

You people act like there's nothing to do in northcentral PA. Haven't you ever played "count the porno shops" while driving up Rt. 15? Them's some good times...

RubberBabyBuggyBumpers 2009-07-02 02:08:01 PM
What an awesome prank! I mean, everybody knows that nothing bad (or newsworthy) ever happens when you tip over a porta potty. Ever!

accujimmy 2009-07-02 02:09:09 PM
In my experience, most little PA towns have one good thing about them. Sometimes is a nice college atmosphere, or a good restaurant/ice cream/brewery/picturesque stream/porn shop and if you know where all of those things are it can be a relaxing drive to find them. If you're an unimaginative turd who judges the relative goodness/badness by how many national chain box stores/theme restaurants there are then PA is a bit sparse. And we have lots of cows.

I'll concede the point, Centre county is special (it has it's own parking space) but the rest of that map is pretty accurate.

Agreed. I just couldn't resist pointing out the irony of of making fun of publishing a news story on something by posting it to another (and perhaps even larger)... um... "news" site. Having pointed that out, I feel satisfied and am thoroughly enjoying the thread. :-)

I said the interstate in central PA, not that specific county. We usually take I-99 north to 22 West, and then 219 North. Arrive in the middle of nowhere.

I'm actually heading that way (to Selinsgrove) this evening. It's staggering, but it's not as much fun as "the I-78 sign". It's like Christmas every time I go past it: what's the fundy moonbat raging against THIS month??

Me to. We need a Fark Party! Oh and it is South Central PA. I get sick of people that look at a map and think an area 20 miles from its Southern Border and 200 miles from its Northern Border is somehow in the Center of the state!

The Harrisburg area, sans Harrisburg itself, is a much better place to live than Pittsburgh. In fact, I am of the opinion that the entire west half of the state should be given to Ohio and WV to split between themselves however they see fit.

Dont Call Me Shirley: A party sounds good, but keep it out of downtown Hbg. its like the OK Corral right now. I vote for Gullifties

I've been to Gullifities 3 times and I work across the street. I think that should sum up my feelings on the place.

When I was in High School the school was in a low lying area (this is in the middle of Florida and probably built on swamp land) anywho, When we'd have sustained heavy rains, the toilets would back up and they would have to bring in the porta johns. Of course a kid went in and another kid tipped it over door down. The kid inside had to be hosed down as he was covered in shiat. We never saw him again but we heard the mother sued the school and the tipper's family. The tipper was expelled and we never saw him again either.

Does Weaver95 go? He seems to hate SCPA, but I wonder if that's just his Fark personality or if he really is such a negative person irl.
