As mentioned in the article, they are also making "Candyland" and "Battleship" (and I also believe a "Monopoly" movie is in the works, and maybe a retool of "Clue" as well) because of some sort of rights usage relationship they made with Hasbro.

I don't know if Hasbro has the rights to the early Atari games now too, or if this is a separate thing, but, obviously they are going for "make a movie from a famous game name" theme now.

Although, as said before, the concept of "Asteroids" is not very original in movies anyway (Armageddon, Deep Impact, etc), although that has never stopped Hollywood before.

But, I can think of a number of other early 80s Video games that seem like they could be fleshed out into at least a movie with maybe a plausible story for a movie more than Asteroids: Dig Dug, Jungle King, Joust, Moon Patrol, Robotron: 2084, Missle Command.

Meh, if Pixar made a video game movie, I'd want them to choose a license that was absolutely bereft of a plot so they could write a blank slate. Since Mario 64, Nintendo has given the Mario setting some real stories and character.

Again, I come back to Bomberman.

Why has there new been a Bubble Bobble the movie? 126 minutes of runtime, with the same song looping over and over again in the background.

The feat of clearing that game has nothing to do with skill, and everything to do with surviving the music after twentysomething levels.

This makes no sense. They already made an "asteroids" movie ten years ago, it was called Armageddon.

Furthermore, even though Atari still owns the trademark for Asteroids (for what reason, who knows; the game was made in 1979), it is fuzzy on why a movie studio would have to pay "for the rights" to make a movie on a game that had no story, and was made 30 years ago. Asteroids is a common name, and although Atari owns the trademark, it would be hard to argue in court that a movie based on a 30 year old game (that was black and white) would be damaging to Atari's trademark.

What exactly is the audience for the movie? Gen Xers?

I can understand (barely) making a monopoly movie, it is the most popopular board game of all time. And I can definitely understand making a candyland movie, but an asteroids movie makes no sense.

All you people who paid to see Transformers: Revenge of the TrukkNutz and all of you who will pay to see GI Joe, I place the blame for this squarely on your shoulders. This is what happens when you give moviemakers positive reinforcement for bad behavior.

I can already hear the defending arguments. "Hey, it's based on a game where a triangle breaks rocks with a gun, and that's what it had. What, were you expecting Shakespeare? I just wanted a fun movie with shiny things, I didn't expect it to have anything like acting, character, direction, cinematography, good dialogue, a plot or good special effects and I was satisfied. If you can't turn your brain off and appreciate a 2 ½ hour movie about a triangle breaking rocks then you're just an indiefag hipster douche who needs to go watch more Fellini."

You'd think that the concept of a planet-sized ship with a face that eats ships and screams "RUN, COWARD! RUN! RUN!" would have gotten someone interested in a movie.

Street Fighter had at least one classic moment thanks to Raul Julia... the scene where he, as Bison, declares that "The day the great Bison entered your village was a day that changed your life forever. For me, it was Tuesday."

I, for one, like the idea of an asteroids movie. The problem I have with a lot of video game movies is that they make needless changes to the story that ruin its video game ties (and usually those changes are stupid and don't work well in movie form anyways).

With asteroids you can't go wrong as long as there's more than one asteroid and a spaceship shoots them at some point.

Frankly, I'd rather see a comedy show based on the Atari offices in the early 80s, a la Code Monkeys, than an Asteroids movie.

The stories about some of the stuff they did were a mix of the funny, outrageous, and geeky, between the "Out Standing In Our Field" video, lighting a guy's desk on fire to try to get his attention during a phone call, and an employee going on the PA screaming "Imperial stormtroopers have entered the base!" repeatedly when new Atari owner Jack Tramiel entered the offices for the first time.

How about Zork: The Movie.

It's a silent movie with a whole lot of Intertitles (the parts where words came on the screen to let the audience know stuff like plot points or dialog)

T.rex 2009-07-02 03:07:19 PM
i actually think this could be very good... like say if they could get Will Smith for the lead... Maybe a Scarlet Johannson as the chick.

Hell, The Rock could play the rock.

This, this, and, oh, yes, this.

More this.

KhamanV: Fano: Mike: Has there ever been a good movie made from a video game? Ever? Even the ones not made by Uwe Boll?

The Last Starfighter.

Fake video game.

I kind of liked Silent Hill. Sorry.

Silent Hill is the best video game movie I've ever watched, but that isn't saying much.

I know people who like the Resident Evil and Tomb Raider movies, as well as Mortal Kombat.

Clue: The Movie is awesome, but there you're talking bored games, not video games. MK produced a good soundtrack, but what else was there? And was there anything worse than Street Fighter?

\my heart still bleeds for Raul Julia

Thereis actually one worse than Street Fighter. It's called 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li'

/Everyone should watch that to see JUST how bad a movie can be.

As terrible as the movie Street Fighter was, his performance is farking fantastic. He had some hilarious material and he delivered it spectacularly.

Victor Sagat: Is this a joke? This money isn't even worth the paper it's printed on!
Bison: On the contrary. Every Bison dollar will be worth five British pounds. That is the exchange rate that the bank of England will implement after I kidnap their queen.

Chun Li: My father saved his village at the cost of his own life. You had him shot as you ran away. A hero at a thousand paces!
Bison: I'm sorry... I don't remember any of it.
Chun Li: You don't remember?
Bison: For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me... it was Tuesday.

Bison: Ah! Doctor Dhalsim! How is your research today?
Dr. Dhalsim: The same. Warped. Corrupted. My science twisted to serve perversion instead of peace.
Bison: Tell you what. After I've crushed my enemies, we'll see about getting you published. That should cheer you up, hmm?

Bison: I hoped to face Guile face-to-face on the battlefield, where we could engage each other in respectful combat. Then I would snap his spine. But why? Why do they still call me a warlord? And mad? All I want to do is to create the perfect genetic soldier. Not for power, not for evil, but for good. Carlos Blanka will be the first of thousands. They will march out of my laboratory and crush every adversary, every creed, every nation! Until the world is in the loving grip of the Pax Bisonica. And peace will reign and all humanity will bow to me in humble gratitude.
Zangief: That vas beautiful boss!

Seriously, if this abomination really happens, please tell me Ed Logg will get a percentage. (If you don't know who he is, he coded Asteroids, Centipede, and Gauntlet...)

Dona Bailey did Centipede and you missed Battlezone for Ed Logg. You remember he quit Atari over that game.

They could get Christopher Walken to play the big mean-face guy.

That would be cool. Huh huh uh uh huh huh.

That's hilarious. I love the early 80s airbrush graphics. And the rendering style is similar yet different from the black-outline-with-non-registered-colorblobs look from the late 70s that you see on the Missile Command graphics.

Farkwaddle: I'm still eagerly waiting on the "Oregon Trail" movie. I mean "Little House on the Prairie" was kind of a half-arsed attempt. They didn't even get past the continental divide! Lazy, wholesome family. I will not be satisfied until they lose half of their wagon from fording a deep river or little Timmy gets taken out by Malaria. And they have to subsist on squirrels since the dad can't seem to find a good hunting spot.

Apple IIe FTW!

Over the years, many videogames have been adapted into major motion pictures...

This summer, get ready to see what started it all...

START BUTTON: THE MOVIE!

Starring Nicholas Cage as Start Button, a man so obsessed with thrills and adventure, he doesn't just look for action... He makes it happen!
Wired for excitement! Programmed for danger! Even the slightest pressure can set him off, so unless you're looking to start something, don't push him!

Start Button: The Movie!
Once it gets started, that's only the beginning!
