It's stunning it took the GOP this long to figure it out, but better late than never, eh?

Life must be very tough for a moderate Republican these days.

I will quit my job and volunteer for Acorn if they promise me I can be the person to knock on Michelle Bachman's door.

Bachmann has said she will answer only certain questions on the 2010 Census form

I will only answer certain questions. It's a common protest. The government has a constitutional need to know how many of me there are (one). It does not have a constitutional need to know the racial mix of my pet tarantulas.

It's good to see that at least some of our GOP leaders understand the concept of the "point of diminishing returns." Clearly Bachmann doesn't.

Did Katherine Harris die when I wasn't watching? I think she's been reincarnated.

True -- at least renting meeting space should be easy. The "Family Booth" at Stuckey's is usually open 24/7.

Unfortunately, governments work best with a viable opposition to keep things in line. Let's hope the GOP can shake some of its bats from the belfry.

Agreed. But at this point, I think the GOP has outlived it's usefulness, and the sooner they burn to the ground, the sooner something else can rise in it's place. I'd like to see a third party pop up with actual conservatives in it.

I hope she doesn't stop with the anti-census thing. As Olbermann noted, guess whose district is one of the most likely to be absorbed if a few thousand people vanish from its census count?

Canada went through a phase where the conservative party basically collapsed. We had 12 years of majority Liberal party government that sat on their hands - doing nothing. Now, we have minority governments that require elections every ten months but at least there's an attempt at tackling some legislation.

What's the authority for this supposed $5,000 fine?

The online US Code has a $100 fine -- rarely or never enforced -- for refusing to answer. 13 USC 221(a). There is a $5,000 fine -- probably also rarely enforced -- for government workers and contractors who improperly disclose information. 13 USC 214.

abb3w

Refusing to answer the intrusive questions doesn't diminish the census count of residents.

13 USC Sec. 221
TITLE 13 - CENSUS

CHAPTER 7 - OFFENSES AND PENALTIES

SUBCHAPTER II - OTHER PERSONS

Sec. 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers

(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.

(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.

Of course, given Bachmann's proven delusions and sociopathy, this action by these other lawmakers will only drive her to higher levels of drooling insanity and "justify" her belief that ACORN has infiltrated the Census process at the highest levels.

Which, gotta admit, is going to be even more entertaining.

I've said it before, but Bachmann doesn't scare me. What DOES scare me that there are hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans who look deep into her Manson Lamps, listen to her make outrageous statements and say "We need to send that woman back to Washington, D.C. for another term! You betcha!"

The best part of this, would be when she IMMEDIATELY went to the press, you could pull me out- a wholesome looking white girl from New England- to look puzzled and show pictures of me that day wearing khakis and a crisp polo shirt.

Who was it who said the Obamas should invite Rush Limbaugh to dinner, put on matching track suits and serve him fried chicken and watermelon, and then deny that ever happened and watch him go crazy saying it did?

lulz.

I see a day when the Democrats are the moderate right party and the U.S. finally has a real Liberal party. Then we can vote for a party that will support gay marriage, gun restrictions, and a government with the power to regulate business.

I'm young so I hope to see that one day.

I am sick unto death of hearing that the Census is "unconstitutional." The Constitution says that it's up the legislature to determine which questions are on it. They could ask for your blood type, work schedule and a list of your greatest fears and it would STILL be constitutional.

By definition, anything the legislature puts on the Census is constitutional. The only unconstitutional questions would be ones the census taker makes up on the fly. ZAZ, you may have a valid point that the questions are intrusive, but they ARE constitutional. You have NO leg to stand on claiming that they are not.

The Census web site says "This fine is changed by the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 from $100 to not more than $5,000." The applicable law seems to be 18 USC 3571(b) saying that all federal infractions are punishable by a fine of $5,000. So not answering a census question is treated the same as not wearing a seat belt while driving on federal property. You probably won't get a ticket for it and if you do you probably won't get a $5,000 fine.
