FTFA: a proposal to spend any TARP profits before they can be returned to the taxpayers.

If they're profits, they aren't being returned anywhere. Byron York is a partisan hack and a dumbass.

jbuist [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 09:26:01 AM
Uhh, use the profits to pay down the debt we incurred when GM and Chrysler defaulted on their loans.

Seems simple enough.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 09:31:02 AM
Use the profit to pay any debt. There is no net profit across the entire government. There is no extra money to spend on more toys or favors. There is negative one trillion dollars to spend.

Sounds reasonable.

What is going on in Frank's mind? Hell, what is going on in Mass voters minds keeping him in congress? The government is in deep, deep Kimshee and he wants to continue spending? This is insane. Why is it so hard to just leave the money alone and be used for it's intended purpose: reducing debt. Granted, 6.2 billion is but a drop in the bucket of 1.8 trillion, but for once, you dumb fark, let the legislation stand as it is instead of going half-cocked on another spending spree. Anyone agreeing with Frank should also have his head examined.

Want to help out the taxpayers? Pay down the debt that was incurred to create the TARP funds in the first place, as it was originally sold to us. As a taxpayer I'd greatly appreciate that.

occrider [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 10:48:23 AM
I work for one of the banks that repaid tarp so I'm getting a kick and so and so ...

No seriously, the tarp money essentially sat in a holding account and did absolutely nothing because everyone was scared shiatless of having to account for how it was spent (god forbid some portion of it were used for standard BAU operations and the public would focus on some insignificant amount used on perceived waste resulting in a PR nightmare). Meanwhile, the government made out like a bandit on ridiculous dividend payments and warrants.

The original TARP legislation required that money made from the program "shall be paid into the general fund of the Treasury for reduction of the public debt."

That's actually a part of TARP I would agree with.

So TARP is working

How could it not "work". It was a bail-out. The question is whether we're better off for having bailed them out versus letting them fail. Some banks didn't even want the TARP money.

Yeah, we're all kinda boned right now because of a separation between Corporation and State. Deregulation didn't work with some people. It just turned them into a kid in a toy store.

Even the diarists on Daily Kos saw THAT one coming four months ago (new window).

The GOP has already painted themselves into a doom-and-gloom corner. Their comments are on video, their words in dated press articles. The can try to take credit, but their own opinion from four months ago is accessible for all to see.

And the big bad government forced them to take the money? Got a source for this?

And while I agree that it is better for there to not be any "too big to fail" corporations as this sets up a real moral hazard, the ripples of financial institutions across the country collapsing would make the situation right now a LOT worse. Ideally, we should make sure to include legislation to prevent companies from getting in this situation again (like oh, I don't know... reinstituting Glass-Steagall?) but the same people who wanted these companies to collapse will bemoan the government interfering with these companies "suceeding".

Perhaps not, but they do have a long and storied history of burning people at the stake. Too much of that sort of thing can lead to a recession, you know.

This administration has done far more damage in 6 months than the Republicans did in 8 years. An there's no end in sight to this calamity. We're past blaming the Republicans. Way past that.

p-e-t-e 2009-07-02 11:37:47 AM
Question; for those who include the total of the TARP loans in the projected 2009 budget deficit of the GWB administration, do these repayments represent a reduction of that deficit? I don't ask with the intention of fanning the flames of Republican versus Democrats, but more along the lines of the theory as counting a loan to an entity (or entities) as deficit spending when there is a likelihood of some repayment in both the short (less than one year) and long term.

See, people say the goverment can't do anything right. Well, here they have turned a profit. Under my economic plan, the government would nationalise the banking and mortgage industries. That way the little guy would be protected form the bankers and brokers.

Why do congresscritters go through all these motions about percentages, equations, bills, votes, etc.... They should just do what they want to do and take over all of our lives completely right now and be done with it. The charade is tiresome.
