They're making smart, quirky movies for a sophisticated young audience.

The pics are trying to be the next "Garden State," a 2004 film that, like other hipster pics, can be generally defined as trafficking in moody music, casual style and characters who are disaffected.

Ok. You must realize that if you keep saying vapid, idiotic shiate like this in the msm, you are going to breed hipsters like farking gremlins.

Wow. A movie studio and a columnist just got into a synergistic vortex of suck. I think a new black hole may just form. I'm going to go shower in hammers now.

Haha, I love this urban dictionary defintion of hipster.

"Someone who thinks that they are being "special" and "unique" for liking some underground bullshiat no one else cares about. And they pointlessly look down on people who don't know anything about indie culture, because that's the only thing they know anything about. They're quick to call the rest of the world conformists when in reality, they are the ones conforming by partaking in a "too cool for mainstream so i am going to reject it by looking and acting like a grungy asshole" way of life only to seem uber-fashionable. They just end up looking like idiots. "

I find it funny that they have to label people who prefer small, well written movies as "hipsters" and try to trick them into seeing their films.

Here's your marketing plan:

A) Make a movie that doesn't suck.

I agree, not all hipsters are bad. I hang out with a few "hipsters" and they are pretty cool, but when I go with them to bars where hipsters congregate, I get to feeling like punching most of them, and I'm not even a violent person. Yeah, I don't actually care. That's part of the joke.

That's the heart of the "indie" fallacy. A reverse-bandwagon is still a bandwagon - when you abandon your favorite band just because it becomes popular, that's just as much a mindless reaction to pop culture as deciding you like whatever's on the top 40 just because it's there.

Why yes, I do believe that living in a perpetual state of disdain for your fellow man, and choosing not to contribute in any way to your own betterment or the betterment of others, can never be praiseworthy and is in fact contemptible.

There's a huge difference between "hey, my friend told me about this band because they think I might like them" and "I'm going to listen to this band, go to this club, quote this movie, because other people are and I need to be in the know."

You're lecturing the wrong person, dude. I've never stopped listening to music that I like because of other people's opinions, good or bad.

Agreed. But what does that have to do with being a hipster? These kids do volunteer work. They tutor in Americorps. They learn ASL and help the deaf. They move overseas and teach English. They dole out soup in shelters. They work at recycling stations.

Disdain for your fellow man? Really? You miss the point entirely. It is a love for the fellow man that precipitates the disdain for a shared destructive cultural agreement.

It's disagreement. Get it?

I'm not a hipster, I donn't think anyway. There's really only 1 band I like that could be called indie, and I don't dress like a goddamn moran. Sure I wear jeans and a t-shirt often, but they are the correct size.

That said, 500 Days of Summer looks like it might be ok.

mesmer242: PJ_the_Barbarian: mesmer242: people who pick music based on what other people say is cool.

That's the heart of the "indie" fallacy. A reverse-bandwagon is still a bandwagon - when you abandon your favorite band just because it becomes popular, that's just as much a mindless reaction to pop culture as deciding you like whatever's on the top 40 just because it's there.

There's a huge difference between "hey, my friend told me about this band because they think I might like them" and "I'm going to listen to this band, go to this club, quote this movie, because other people are and I need to be in the know."

You're lecturing the wrong person, dude. I've never stopped listening to music that I like because of other people's opinions, good or bad.

wasn't a lecture, I was reinforcing the point.

Some bands do get more bland and lose character by the third album though.

1st album - Interesting, unpolished, pure them
2nd album - Better because they've worked out how to do this stuff, but loses a little bit of the rawness of album 1. This album is what breaks them to the mainstream.
3rd album - The label has started to interfere more and take more control, the music becomes plasticised and populist.

I'm not saying it always goes like this, I just think that it does quite a bit. I do think that sometimes bands become worse as they get more popular.

Either that or I liked the original sound and they've moved off it to a new sound by album 3.

That's a fair point, but then there are other bands where success allows them to buy voice lessons, and they actually start sounding like they know how to sing after that.

It's rare, but it happens.

I barely can. My dad drank it in the 70s. The first time I went to the EARL in summer 2000 (when I moved to ATL) it was already the hipster beer of choice.

It was also the beer of choice at Moes and Joes, which is for non-hipster college kids. Go figure.

"Hip" has permeated the mainstream deeply. I'd say that after the 1960s, it spun out of control, and lost all of its cachet. Nothing left to pierce; no place left untattooed.

So, yes, "hipsters," the way to "assert your individuality" now is not so much based on how you look; you're going to have to tuck in your shirts and get a freaking life. Yours, Goethe.

There are just so many obnoxious hipsters who think they're the shiat, but really, they aint shiat. All groups of people have assholes, but it just seems like there is a greater concentration of them among hipsters.

Once they have reached a certain age it is required that they make a pilgrimage to Alaska to go backpacking in Denali. This usually results in spending a day there and the rest of the week clogging all the bars in Anchorage. I have to avoid drinking heavily otherwise I start losing control of the urge throw anyone in tight jeans, retro pumas, or ironic trucker hat through glass windows.

You posted pictures of a disgusting burger king ad and a random vapid right-winger, then said "Yeah, it's the hipsters that suck. They're awful. So bad it hurts."

I see two possible interpretations for this, both of them fallacies: Either you're saying that being a hipster is good because the only alternative is full buy-in to consumerism (and apparently the GOP), or you're saying that hipster bashing is wrong because there's a group that is more deserving of a bashing.

Neither is a cogent argument.

Hipsters are pretty bad, but I would still take them over hippies or generic frat-boy douchebags.

There was a phish concert at the stadium next to my building a few weeks ago and when I left my office around 6pm all the hippies were hanging out in the parking lot waiting for the concert to start. As if it taking 20 minutes to get off campus wasn't bad enough, having to drive past all their filthy dreadlocks and tie dyed shirts made it really hard not to just mow someone down.

I like a lot of indie music, not because it's indie, but because I tend to like fairly eclectic rock, which doesn't have a large fan base. So, it's not that I like independent music, it's that the music I like generally doesn't become that popular.

So you thought Catwoman was a pretty cool guy?

I find that critics are good for most things, but you need to understand that:

- a critic has to say that more of the same = bad. So if you like entertainment that isn't "art," you have to take reviews of blockbuster action pics, especially sequels, with a grain of salt.

- critics usually hate crude humor, so some comedies get panned even if they're funny. I for one thought Super Troopers was pretty great. Its tomatometer rating pretty bad.

But if something's pretentious and artsy, and the critics still hate it, that's a slam-dunk for me usually. And if it's action or sci-fi and critics actually like it, I find that those movies are usually among my favorites.

Agreed. Though, as far as song writers go I'd have to say Tom Gabel (lead singer of Against Me!) is one of the best. He seems to capture western culture perfectly, both in his disdain and need to be a part of it in some sense.

It's useless trying to make a movie appeal to hipsters by putting hipster characters and hip music in it. Hipsters don't want to see other hipsters because they hate other hipsters. That's what being a hipster is all about.

And anyway, fashion changes so quickly for hipsters that, by the time a movie is in theatres, the audience it was made for no longer exists, having moved on to other trends.

These people like movies about dorky idiots, that have goofy music or old mainstream music like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, not movies about bearded guys in girl jeans listening to the flavour of the month. And you know what else they like? farking Pixar movies.

As a hipster film critic who has seen 500 Days of Summer, I beg to disagree with you. You'd be right if the movie was just about hipsters being ridiculous and discussing what vegan bakery to have lunch, then it'd be intolerable.

500 Days of Summer is not like Garden State, but Annie Hall. Both take a completely unoriginal ideas (girl breaks up with guy), and add a bunch of weird references and visual gags. Instead of Marshall McLuhan appearing behind a wall (as in Annie Hall), you have a Hall & Oates musical number. Ironically, what saves 500 Days from being just another hipster movie is its universal appeal. Who hasn't felt like shiat after being dumped?

Good call on the older music, though. Tom (the main character) listens to the Smiths and wears a Joy Division t-shirt.

There are different kinds of hipsters.

But generally I define it as what kids from various niche music scenes...punk/goth/the occasional hippy...grow into. They try to express their "different-ness" in more socially conservative ways in adulthood...buy purchasing whatever is marketed to them as counterculture hipness. iPods, Minis/VWs, designer jeans, and the like. They tend to actually be the most sheepish demographic in the adult population.

Every once in a while you see a real nonconformist: somebody in a long-tailed white tuxedo he got from Goodwill, with a sphygmomanometer wrapped around his arm for no apparent reason, and a tricorne on his head. You wanna know what I think? I think you're some kind of deviated prevert. I think Drew found out about your preversion, and that you were organizing some kind of mutiny of preverts.

boobsrgood: Wrong. Let's examine that word through text.

Wwwwww...pierced lips, larynx engaged, fricative.

rrrr...same as before, but cheeks flexed and sound moved forward

oooo...an open sound

nnnn...the back of the tongue touches your palate

ggg... it was a monster mash

W isn't a fricative. It's a voiced labial-velar approximant (pops).

I'm not even going to go near the rest of that.

Only if they suck for other reasons. Your fark handle immunizes you from any major consideration of suckage, though.

Every once in a while you see a real nonconformist: somebody in a long-tailed white tuxedo he got from Goodwill, with a sphygmomanometer wrapped around his arm for no apparent reason, and a tricorne on his head. I like those people, because they remind me of how ridiculous your average "nonconformist" is.

No one would have believed in the beginning of the 21st Century that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences hipper than Man's. Yet, across the gulf of space on the indie media scene, intellects vast and cool and unsypathetic regarded our culture with envious eyes, and slowly and surely joined their plans against us.

Latinwolf: T-Luv: Ikam: SkeetNinja: You sound like a hipster.

I'm too old to be a hipster, but I live in a neighborhood with a bunch of them. Some are okay, some (the sorts that take themselves seriously) get on my last nerve.

I agree, not all hipsters are bad. I hang out with a few "hipsters" and they are pretty cool, but when I go with them to bars where hipsters congregate, I get to feeling like punching most of them, and I'm not even a violent person. There are just so many obnoxious hipsters who think they're the shiat, but really, they aint shiat. All groups of people have assholes, but it just seems like there is a greater concentration of them among hipsters.

I have to disagree, I think there's a bigger concentration of assholes in this group:

looks like Long Island

so the nebulous "power elites" are my "buddies" because I don't respect a subculture that represents nothing beyond its own special brand of self-satisfied egotism - who, in fact, define themselves by popular culture perhaps more thoroughly than any other group by trying to calculate its opposite and be that.

And on top of all of it, you persist in the fallacious argument that hipsters are either the only non-participants in pop culture or somehow ennobled by their disdain for it, without justifying either claim, and without explaining why "B-b-b-but Burger King!" isn't a red herring.

Sweet. That shirt idea reminds me of a high school friend I had back in the day. He always used to say "I hate people" in a half serious, half joking tone. Everyone kind of thought it was a little weird and a little psychotic, but overall he was a really nice guy and we all got along with him. After going through college, getting a full time job, and meeting/dealing with lots of people along the way, I've realized why he always said that: society in general is full of idiots and morans, and the stupidity that is present is mind-boggling. My friend was wise beyond his years.

/still friends with him to this day

well, yeah, society is full of assholes and retards....and cold-hearted coonts.

but im sick and tired of these "rules"...im not referring to laws. i mean rules. where we have to have these personas. being yourself is so difficult because EVERYONE is so goddamn judgmental and superficial and unforgiving. and selfish. and you cant trust anyone really.

oh and my favorite 2 are: lower your expecations. and 2...and this is the real kicker:

when you like someone, you cant show them you like them. youre supposed to pretend that you dont like them EVEN THOUGH they know you like them. so you finally win her over till you can say "i like you"

its a waste of time. and im not a game player. if i like someone, im not shy about it. i mean i dont stand outside her window singing songs, but i never played the game correctly anyway.

all these farking games and rules. its not a farking joke people.

here, this song HELPS sum it up:
