Noah Hodgkiss, 56, did not notice the train thundering towards him because he has cataracts and hearing problems.

To make matters worse, the batteries on his hearing aid were flat and he had no idea the train was there until he glanced over his shoulder at the last second.

That starts like an Onion article. There's a train a mile from my house, I can feel the vibrations in the ground when it goes by. Gotta think this isn't the most observant man in the world.

To be fair to Mr Dumbass - I'm going to guess yours is a freight line. It's much easier to hear/feel a heavy, slow freight train coming than than a passenger express.

All you get from that is a 'whistle' in the rails a few seconds before it arrives.

I guess if the train had slapped him instead, it would have been more insult than injury.

You live near a rail line in the US. Outside of the US, passenger trains generally go 100 km/h or faster, are light, quiet, and pretty much impossible to hear until it's too late.

At 160 km/h, you have a few seconds at most after the train is audible to get out of the way, especially electric ones. You won't feel squat for vibration until it's too late, either.

On high speed lines (300, 320 km/h), by the time you *see* the train, it's already too late to get out of the way.

He had a broken pelvis, but discharged himself from the hospital early?

I bet he doesn't have insurance. Better to crawl home than stay another minute.

I'm sure if it were a Verizon train, he would have heard it.

A little dramatic... I live in Daejeon, South Korea where the KTX cruises by at just over 300km/h and the tracks are so long and straight you can *see* them coming from just about Seoul.

This is in Britain, where there's universal health care.
