Casey Kasem is actually an incredibly nice Detroiter. Greetings, subby here-I'm celebrating since this thread is my 500th Green(Of course this doesn't include several mysteriously reverted greens, & my only Epic Thread that was pulled after Farkers got into a border skirmish with the webmistress of the linked website), empirical evidence I have no life. Indulge me with this link to my 1st Green, the tag was a mistake, but a buncha liters prove There's No Hate Like Subby Hate; Link (new window)

I remember listening to the late-night broadcast of AT40 when working the late shift (the station would run it once in the morning and once at night).

This was when Billy Ray Cyrus had come out with that infamous tune, and it was in the Top 10 that week.

Kasem comes on after the #6 song and says, "This week, Billy Ray Cyrus comes in at #5 with 'Achy Breaky Heart'."

A second later he says, "And now, on with the countdown."

I don't know if the radio station cut the tune, or if Kasem didn't want to play it, but I thought that was funny as hell.

/was the only place you didn't hear that damn song

AT40 was a Sunday afternoon ritual for me in the 1980s, especially in the summertime when I would usually wash my parents' car while listening to all 4 hours of AT40. These days I look back and realize "it took them 4 hours to play 40 songs?" Yeah, it was about 2:10 of music and 1:50 of commercials but who cares, it was Casey Kasem!

Then in January came the "top 100 of the year" countdown, which I always hated because they edited the fark out of the songs to make them about 1:45 apiece so they could get all 100 songs in 6 hours with the same amount of commercial time per hour. That and the radio station would move the countdown from Noon to 6am that week.

I enjoyed listening to Casey Kasem in the 1980s. I would be driving back to University after visiting home and listen to it on Sunday nights.

Mental_Knife: They still replay his old AT40 on the Sirius 70's & 80's channels periodically.

Plenty of stations around the country play'em too.
Clever Farkers listen.

ChrisPC: Actually, it's pretty cool to hear what was really on the charts, in order, and not the Clear Channel version of the '70s or '80s. The stuff at the bottom is really cool, or really bad. Sometimes there are acts I never knew existed.

Ahh, ATF, I agree with the Farker above, free tape singles if you didn't mind a little patter before hand. It supplied me with a go-to source for all those songs I was never fast enough to record off the radio without missing the intro.

Zumaki: before I RTFA, I thought this story was about his death.

Whew.

Same here. But I stopped listening to his show in the 80's, had no idea he was still doing it.

N. S. Radieaux: It's a real end of an era: According to Radio-Info's Tom Taylor, radio legend Casey Kasem will end his final countdown show, the Adult Contemporary-targeted "American Top 20," on the July 4th weekend.

Wait for it...
