It's a real end of an era: According to Radio-Info's Tom Taylor, radio legend Casey Kasem will end his final countdown show, the Adult Contemporary-targeted "American Top 20," on the July 4th weekend.

Wait for it...

Back when I was a kid in the 80s I once made fun of this show in front of a friend of my Dad. He quietly told me that this show was a lifeline for GIs fighting in Vietnam.

Later I found out this friend did three tours there as a Navy Seal.

Think about that every time I run across an old re-broadcast on XM radio.

I've got mixed feelings about this. On one side, it's kinda sad, 39 years running and it's ending.

On the other I'm saying "Thank farking god!"
I work 2 jobs. My other job is at a little pizza place and I usually open on Sunday mornings which means lots of food prep while listening to American Top 20. It drives me nuts.

Of course, this still means my manager has to choose another station which will most likely be the "We play anything." station. Ugh... it's a no win.

Casey Kasem's in his late 70s now and frequently fills up and overflows his Depends before reaching #23. Seacrest can make it all the way to #8 so there's less to clean up.

BlueMidget 2009-07-02 09:32:09 AM
Besides his counting down the hits and being a constant voice on the radio for most of my youth, I shall always remember three great things that Casey gave us.

First, I could never hear him on the air without remembering the hysterical, gut-wrenching laughter my friends and I suffered through after we first heard the 'Casey Kasem Flips Out' outtake with the story of Snuggles back in the early 90's.

Second, I remember the first time I realized while watching Scooby Doo as a teenager and saying to myself, "Holy Crap! Casey Kasem is Shaggy!?" Then rinsing and repeating that to many of his other works as a voice actor such as Bluestreak and Cliffjumper of Transformers, Robin of The Superfriends, and just about anytime he did a guest appearance on a cartoon show.

Third, I can never forget the inspiration he gave my friend's off-the-rocker cousin who, while playing Wolfenstein would constantly speak as if he were Casey, "Dear Casey, I've left some guns and ammunition for you behind the painting, hugs of kisses, Hitler."

Forget Mike, Casey was the shiat!

"Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars"

We used have to take turns engineering (pressing a button or two) Kasem's show on Sunday mornings. Came in to our station on CD. Jeebus, you could not listen loud in the headphones because when he opened that mic the compression would suck out your eardrums. I wonder what he really sounds like in person because on his show the Casey voice was all processsing.

And now, for our long distance dedication for Ilene. The letter reads:

"Dear Casey -

I've loved dancing for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, I was involved in a farm accident last summer. Casey, my left leg got trapped in some farm machinery and it was ripped off my body. Casey, I miss my left leg and want it to know how sorry I am that we're no longer together. Casey, could you please play 'At the Hop' for my left leg?

Signed,

Ilene Onwalls"

Well, Ilene, here's your long distance dedication to your left leg. Keep your foot on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!

I'm putting money on Casey committing suicide during his last dedication. Since every dedication is pure depressive sap, I think it would just be fitting.

"Dear Casey, my hit top 20 show is ending. My entire career has been nothing but voicing cartoons. My wife hates me and as far as I know, I'm mocked by everybody in the world and often mistaken for Dick Clark. Could you dedicate one song to me before I Budd Dwyer myself? Love, Casey.

When I was a little girl, we lived in California, where the Top 40 originated (it was the Top 40 then). We could drive by the radio station in Stockton and see Casey Kasem in the window of the radio station, broadcasting his show. It blew our little minds that Our DJ was sending this show all over the country.

I think it was the first time I was aware of that thing called "syndication."

Actually, it's pretty cool to hear what was really on the charts, in order, and not the Clear Channel version of the '70s or '80s. The stuff at the bottom is really cool, or really bad. Sometimes there are acts I never knew existed.

So what's the story behind him losing the American Top 40 gig that Ryan Seacrest does now?

KIIS in LA played network commercials during Casey's show in 1981, so his show was moved to a different network, so KIIS made their own with Rick Dees, which got pretty big and then Rick Dees left and they got Ryan Seacrest to do it.

Yeah, but given his love of depressing stories to dedicate music to, I'm guessing it's left him bitter and unfulfilled or just suicidal. There's something seriously wrong with that man that playing a robot called Cliffjumper cannot solve.

His wife filmed a movie in DC back in the late 80's and she was a real cooont.

BTW, one of the absolute worst movies ever committed to celluloid - "Elliot Fauman, PhD" My now ex-wife told me that they were going to use her office (at Mt. Vernon College, where she was a professor) and the campus to film a movie and I asked her who was starring in it. She replied, Dreyfuss! Me: Wow, Richard Dryfuss, that's got to be a big budget flick. Then she smiled and said, no - not Richard, his nephew Randy.

Jean Kasem was delivered to the set each day in a huge limo and was just an absolute beyotch to the crew according to my wife.

Greetings, subby here-I'm celebrating since this thread is my 500th Green(Of course this doesn't include several mysteriously reverted greens, & my only Epic Thread that was pulled after Farkers got into a border skirmish with the webmistress of the linked website), empirical evidence I have no life. Indulge me with this link to my 1st Green, the tag was a mistake, but a buncha liters prove There's No Hate Like Subby Hate; Link (new window)

I remember listening to the late-night broadcast of AT40 when working the late shift (the station would run it once in the morning and once at night).

This was when Billy Ray Cyrus had come out with that infamous tune, and it was in the Top 10 that week.

Kasem comes on after the #6 song and says, "This week, Billy Ray Cyrus comes in at #5 with 'Achy Breaky Heart'."

A second later he says, "And now, on with the countdown."

I don't know if the radio station cut the tune, or if Kasem didn't want to play it, but I thought that was funny as hell.

/was the only place you didn't hear that damn song

AT40 was a Sunday afternoon ritual for me in the 1980s, especially in the summertime when I would usually wash my parents' car while listening to all 4 hours of AT40. These days I look back and realize "it took them 4 hours to play 40 songs?" Yeah, it was about 2:10 of music and 1:50 of commercials but who cares, it was Casey Kasem!

Then in January came the "top 100 of the year" countdown, which I always hated because they edited the fark out of the songs to make them about 1:45 apiece so they could get all 100 songs in 6 hours with the same amount of commercial time per hour. That and the radio station would move the countdown from Noon to 6am that week.

I enjoyed listening to Casey Kasem in the 1980s. I would be driving back to University after visiting home and listen to it on Sunday nights.

Mental_Knife: They still replay his old AT40 on the Sirius 70's & 80's channels periodically.

Plenty of stations around the country play'em too.
Clever Farkers listen.

ChrisPC: Actually, it's pretty cool to hear what was really on the charts, in order, and not the Clear Channel version of the '70s or '80s. The stuff at the bottom is really cool, or really bad. Sometimes there are acts I never knew existed.

Ahh, ATF, I agree with the Farker above, free tape singles if you didn't mind a little patter before hand. It supplied me with a go-to source for all those songs I was never fast enough to record off the radio without missing the intro.

Zumaki: before I RTFA, I thought this story was about his death.

Whew.

Same here. But I stopped listening to his show in the 80's, had no idea he was still doing it.

N. S. Radieaux: It's a real end of an era: According to Radio-Info's Tom Taylor, radio legend Casey Kasem will end his final countdown show, the Adult Contemporary-targeted "American Top 20," on the July 4th weekend.

Wait for it...
