Chicago actually has two styles of pizza unique to the area.

One is the one many people rag on (especially on Fark), the deep dish, and it's cousin, the stuffed pizza. That is just a matter of if you are in the mood for a deep dish or a thinner pizza at the time.

The second is "Chicago style thin crust":

If you're going to make an argument in favor of Chicago pizza, perhaps you should have picked a photo of a pizza that looks about as appetizing as a $5 Little Caesar's pizza.

I liked Little Caesar's when I lived in the desert and there was no good pizza whatsoever. But I've since moved away, and I believe Albuquerque has since found a couple of good pizza recipes.

Nunzios was really good pizza in the early 90s but alas they managed the business all wrong...Pretty sad for a family business.

Little Caesar's is okay when you're drunk/and or broke. Living in CA it's hard to find a decent pizza, but Little Caesar's is pretty much bottom of the barrel. I do like their Crazy bread though.

I've got a disgusting little fondness for their cheese bread. It'll make your car reek of garlic on the drive home and you should probably stay in for the night after eating it, but it's so good.

The pizza fights on fark are always amusing because Chicago fans can't get their disses straight. From what I've learned on fark, NYC style pizza is too greasy but doesn't have any cheese, is steamrolled but too thick and unwieldy, has doughy uncooked crust that is too crisp and cardboardy, has too much sauce but not enough , etc.

It's a SI poll, based on MLB player response, so how is that CNN fail? It's misidentified in the link description but it does go to SI.com.

I'm guessing players would pick Joe Maddon as a the manager they'd want to play for the most.

Considering he seems like the kind of guy that would respond with a random passage from Macbeth when asked about whether or not to put on a hit-and-run in a crucial moment late in a game, I would too, just for the hilarity.

I always come across those threads when they're already in the hundreds (you guys are almost as bad as beer flamethrowers), but I just want something not so...dang...gummy. Give me thin and crispy every time. And I could also do without those eight square foot slices. And don't be afraid of toppings. They're there to help you. That's it.

I'm not a fan of Lou, but at least he shows a little emotion when a pitcher refuses to throw a strike to the 8 and 9 hitter and loads the bases for the top of the line up.

Players are used to hearing "Aw, tough outing kid, you'll get em next time" when they need to hear "Throw a farking strike, you pussy"

Well I'm strictly a thin cruster. Chicago is crunchy while NYC is soft, which I guess is supposed to facilitate folding but...yeesh. Oh yeah, and what's with the toppings (such as they are) on top of the cheese? Minor nitpick but come on, cheese on top. These are fixable things! :-)

ZoSo_the_Crowe 2009-07-02 01:25:40 AM
To me, a former Chicagoan, Chicago-style thin crust is cooked almost but not burnt so it's crispy like a cracker, with the toppings under the cheese (which I guess makes them not really toppings). And it is delicious.

My experiences with New York style pizza have been soggy, spongy messes that you can fold in half and eat. Eww.

I think that reflects on Torre's approach at managing players. If the player performs on his own, Torre will let him do whatever he wants. If there's someone slacking out there though, he's going to have some uncomfortable closed-door meetings.

Could also be that Torre's one of the ugliest-looking men alive.

The poll is incredibly stupid because -- as happened -- the most well-known managers were picked on both sides. That is always the case with a poll like this.

I just realized that if it had been the manager of the Indians in this position, you would call that a Wedge issue among baseball players.

I think this poll is a farce. The only reason why the top 4 are on there that high is because of how much media attention they draw. I didn't click the remaining 25 but I am sure the last one will be a manager from a 2nd rate team that doesn't have a big market.

LOL. In Chicago Dusty would always prop up whatever motivational book he was supposedly reading so that it would appear on camera behind him as he stood at the end of the dugout chewing on his signature toothpick. The man loves branding.

Toppings under cheese may as well not even be there. Why do you think they're called TOPPINGS. If they were supposed to be under the cheese, they'd be "middlings" or "insidings." There was a local place that started putting the pepperoni under the cheese a few years back. You had to explicitly order it on top and they regularly screwed that up. The only way the put them on top was to order double-pepperoni, which would be fine except for the fact that you had to pay more for them to make a pizza the right way.

I love how all baseball threads on Fark are Cub-related.

I hope the Mets players weren't the ones not wanting to play for Ozzie, since we've seen plenty of Jerry Manuel around these parts, and Ozzie is a better manager. Also, far more entertaining.

And how this turned into a pizza thread is beyond me, but I'll say this -- I had Pizano's thin crust the other night and it kicked the crap out of anything I've ever had in NYC.

This. A properly loaded pizza will have some toppings on top, where toppings belong, and others under the cheese because they cook properly there. Onions are a good example of an under-the-cheese topping. Onions on top burn easy so you have to pay very close attention to your oven temp and cook time. Uner the cheese you can cook it just like you would a cheese only and have it come out just fine.

For me, L&B is pizza + sentimental attachment. And by "sentimental attachment" I mean "I grew up with a family member living in the house directly behind L&B." The guys come out back and pass it over the fence. I'm kind of spoiled in that regard.

Bill Frist: What brewery in Chicago is as good as Brooklyn (with the caveat that brooklyn lager is pretty pedestrian)?

Goose Island should distribute in NY, or at least I'd think they would -- they have ins with the Bud distribution network and while they don't show up nationwide I do know that they are sold in England. If you can find the Bourbon County Stout or the Imperial IPA, that'd probably be the ideal ones. Matilda is good too. Unfortunately, some of their best stuff really only shows up in the brewpub, and only at the original Clybourn location at that (the one by Wrigley usually doesn't have as many on tap).

I like Brooklyn beers and especially appreciate what Garrett has done to try to educate people on food and beer, but I think we have it better on beers brewed here as well as what we have access to from distribution (even with our retarded distribution laws which have kept breweries like Stone from distributing here even though you can buy them in Michigan and Indiana). I suspect it's just too expensive to brew in New York City -- certainly that's the case in Manhattan. Given we're about 1/5 the size of NYC (all boroughs) but have as many or more breweries, there has to be a reason.

The near suburbs (which probably really isn't much different in drive time from areas of Manhattan to the breweries in Brooklyn) include breweries like Three Floyds, which may not distribute up there but brews a bunch of really good stuff.

I'll drink to that.

I must admit that, while I do think there are some good breweries around NYC like Brooklyn, I have no idea why I listed beer there. NYC is famous for a ton of things (music, restaurants, theater, comedy, pizza, literature, etc. etc.) but beer isn't one of them.

Guess I'm just thirsty....
