Well, if you like lost, you're pretty easy to please, so yes, buy it...

But seriously, it's a good show. What pissed off a lot of people was the rather colorful alien design, including a main character that's basically a muppet. Not to mention the big baddie who ran around dressed like the gimp from Pulp Fiction...
So visually it's definitely nothing like the shades-of-brown look of BSG, more like early B5.

What I liked a lot was the "Yankee in King Arthur's Court" displacement of John Crichton, the lone human amongst a horde of alien guys. Nobody understands his pop culture references.
And rather like B5, it starts out with a largely serial format, but after a while characters from past episodes appear again and a larger plot forms. It's still about a few prisoners on their sentient spaceship, though.

It's basically Dark Crystal Babylon's 7.

It's a sweet show, although it's got its ups and downs too. And the "ending" miniseries is... meh.

What I love about it, personally, is that it does a really good job updating the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers type of story/setting into something that's more believable. Grittier, without picking up that vibe of, "LOOK HOW EDGY WE ARE. EDGY. YAY."

t3knomanser 2009-07-02 08:37:44 AM
MmmmBacon: Is it wrong of me that I enjoyed "Andromeda", too?

"Andromeda" was better than it had any right to be. It was perfect for that late Saturday timeslot. The "Lost World" revamp fits into that too- it was also better than it had any right to be. "Earth Final Conflict", on the other hand, was just as bad as I expected it to be, but was still addictive.

Walker [TotalFark] 2009-07-02 08:38:39 AM
I loved Farscape and saw every episode, but it did start to jump the shark towards the end. Not completely, but it was getting close. I don't think they ever should have arrived on Earth, that was sort of the jump the shark moment. The whole point of the series was a guy trapped in distant space unable to get home to Earth. Letting him get home was like letting Gilligan get off the island or letting the fugitive catch the one-armed man. After that, now what?

Also there are nit-picks such as no one was supposed to be able to understand them unless the DRDs give them a translator shot, but we saw John watching a show from Earth with D'Argo speaking English. There were no sub-titles or anything for people on earth watching, so how did they understand him? There were also other instances where people understood them without ever having gotten a shot. Also D'Argo's high tech invisible ship was easily detected and blasted into a million pieces with him and Chianna in it, yet they were perfectly fine.

It did have some great story arcs though and they weren't afraid to kill off major characters, although like "Heroes" some of them didn't stay dead, despite being killed numerous times. Scorpius, I'm looking at you. At one point they had tons of characters on Moya at the same time, such as Jool, D'Argo's son, Sikozu, and the old lady. Not sure if I preferred that or the smaller crew but it was a great ride while it lasted. Friday night's on Sci-Fi were great. Farscape, then Lexx. 8pm was interesting too with the various shows that aired there. Remember the campy "Black Scorpion"?

Do yourselves a favor and let the fond memories you have stay that way.

I watched the whole series all in a row (thank you bit torrent), including the movie at the end. It was damn near intolerable, but I persevered because it was the only English programming I had available (and it was new to me). EVERY major character on that show is an asshole. The general nature of their interaction was in the form of argument and I constantly felt myself wishing they would just shut up.

It's not a total disaster, but I think the weekly episodic nature of it likely made it a more pleasant experience. I just couldn't stand it in concentrated doses.

I also had a problem with the lack of rules. Absolutely anything could happen, good, bad, or otherwise. Any problem was surmountable through the discovery of a new "thing" or ability of Moya. They did MULTIPLE episodes that turned out to be dream sequences, totally ripping off the viewer.

It did have Claudia Black in tight outfits. That's about it, though.

I'm sorry to rag on it so much, but I was just so disappointed by it. I'd only recommend it if you have nothing else.

Architecture Of Aggression: secondly; I am a fan of bsg, lost, getting babylon 5 now. is this a sweet show too or does it suck?

People who've seen Farscape either love it or hate it (I'm in the 'love it' camp, but that's me.) It takes the dystopian future of BSG, mixes it with the motley-crew-commits-petty-crimes-to-survive storyline of Firefly, has Star Wars-like SFX & characters, includes one character who's a Muppet, and most of the cast dresses like they just walked off the set of an Australian S&M photo shoot. Very quirky & IMHO more imaginative than most scifi fare; again, you'll either love it or hate it, so check out a few episodes online first before buying.

That said, the storyline got pretty weird after Crichton was 'twinned' and the final episode p*ssed me off so much, I threw things at my TV when it ended. So I'd advise skipping the last episode & "Peacekeeper Wars" followup mini.

/but other than that, great show :)

I thought "Peacekeeper Wars" did a decent job of FINALLY ending the series. Otherwise I'm with you, the ending of season 4 sucked. However the show was going to have a 5th season before it was canceled so I don't believe that they really meant to end the series that way.

Antimatter 2009-07-02 09:24:21 AM
I was wondering what would happen to the rights now that ADV Films is pretty much history. That was a sad stat of affairs really, they used to be the tops of the anime distribution world, but they just slowly went downhill and now they've pretty much stopped dubbing any new anime, becoming nothing more then a release house of cheep asian films.

Their handling of Farscape was also weird. they handled it like an old school anime release, where seasons were sold as individual dvd's with 3-4 episodes for $25 a pop. Thats not how most people like to pick up their TV shows, prefering box sets for $50-100.

Succeeded, even. Thus, the choice of "We've already got one" Frenchman.

IIR, I had bought all four right when the Peacekeeper Wars aired, and recorded PW from cable to DVD. (I've since replaced the home-brew DVD of the PW with a store bought; the local cable company was crap for maintaining cables.) I'm confident the price has gone up since; I thought they were under $100 initially (about $75?@), but my memory is thus suspect. They came out roughly around the time I had switched jobs at a 30% pay raise, and I had not yet adjusted my life to otherwise erode the resulting level of disposable income.

Junzi Nicuzn: I have four seasons in four boxes, and all four combined cost me a bit over $200.

That sounds about right. However, the current price is about $80-120 per Season... and the economy is a bit more obviously screwed than it was around 2004.

I remember reading an interview with Claudia Black about how the series ended. They all knew it was a real possibility it was canceled, but went ahead anyway with the plans. Thankfully a fan uproar prompted them to complete the story with the mini-series. Though a bit rushed, it did wrap things up pretty well.

Do not convince production companies that quality SF is worth investing money in... which I am bothered by.

Starving college and grad students, I have sympathy for. Folk who missed an episode, by all means "borrow" a copy of the recording from Teh Internet for a few days so you can watch it and keep up with the series. But if you're still doing that when you're out in the world and gainfully employed, you're a shmuck.

Yeah, I picked up the boxes on ebay in 04, I think I only paid 60 a season and had peacekeeper wars thrown in too.
I'm wondering if the new box will have peacekeeper wars, just says "all four seasons" which leads me to believe it probably won't.

Farscape. One of the best shows, of any genre, ever shown on television. It has the wit and edginess of a real Aussie production; long story arcs typically unseen on TV, especially sci-fi; and the trademark heart, real emotional punch, of Henson productions. If you haven't given it a chance, you're really missing something amazing, touching and unique. I love every single frame ever shot of that show.

Oh man, I'm so glad to see so many other Farscape fans come out of the woodwork here on Fark.

I absolutely agree with the posters above who said that Farscape is the best scifi tv show ever made.

It does pretty much *everything* right. It's pretty incredible really.

rmatthewware 2009-07-02 01:06:05 PM
Yeah, I just downloaded the whole thing when I saw the DVDs selling for $120 a season. You price something unfairly, people will just find other ways of getting it.

Newbaca 2009-07-02 01:09:16 PM
Liked the show, but it certainly did have it's share of nearly intolerable, eye-roll inducing, filler episodes. But the highs made up for it. Seasons 1 and 3 are my favorite. Actually liked it a good deal more than BSG (only really cared for the first season and mini-series), which I know is heretical in sci-fi circles.

You're ok, kid. I'd rather you make realistic claims about it than proclaim it the best show ever.

B5 is my favorite, so what do I know?

Could they pretend the "movie" never happened and get the crew together for a 6- or 8-episode series wrap-up to replace it, while they're still young enough for makeup to fix any aging?

/ Please?
// God the "movie" blew
/// Clearly crammed half a season's worth of material in to a couple hours.

MmmmBacon: Is it wrong of me that I enjoyed "Andromeda", too? If I could get that whole series of that in one box, I'd be a very happy geek!

You can. It's called the Slipstream Collection and runs about 170 bucks for 50 discs. It was 99 when it came out, so I got a killer deal on that one.

Once a year I get into a fit and have to watch the series beginning to end. It may have had a few bad episodes (the fairy-tale puzzle game is one I prefer to skip) but usually I watch them anyway because Chrichton's dialogue is at some point going to drop some fantastic one-liners.

/Browder for Captain America!

Same here...I got the slipstream box set for $80 during an amazon sale....fun show.

SupremeLeader: It's not my problem that their business model is outdated.

img89.imageshack.us[i14.ebayimg.com!]

True, the current social ecology may prevent some current business models from being viable; on the other hand, the casual contempt of copyright embodied in "Torrents are free, young padawan" seems detrimental to any business model's being able to recoup the resources used to produce creative material. While there are several possible responses by such businesses (and by government), they all seem to reduce net benefit to society overall.

So, yes, your problem is not their business model, but that your current attitudes may leave (ceteris paribus) your society in a better position were you to stop existing than if you continue. Of course, I'll presume that (despite your being on Fark) you have other personal attributes provide benefits to significantly outweigh this.

THANK GOD!! I hated how overpriced and ridiculous they released the box sets. Hoping the new releases will be cheaper and packaged better.

that it lasted 1 season to long?

I'd love to see Browder as Cap.

Farscape was inventive, imaginative, witty, sexy and fun. It's a winner because it never tried to be High Drama, but still managed to be highly dramatic.

"I'm nobody's puppet!"

B5? Surely. The fault lies with the network (TNT?), but that doesn't change the finished product. Total shame, but seasons 3-4 are the best sci-fi/fantasy on TV (ever), in my opinion.

Ahem, except for Farscape of course. Heh.

Though, for what it was, B5 was definitely one of the finest examples. Great story, great characters. Loved G'kar and Molari. They were even better than Odo and Quark.

that was "our" Friday night show....(before children...heck, before marriage)....it was just so super geeky, and yet so sexy at the same time.

Kembada: And did anyone mention Pip?

I did mention Pip/Gigi! Not enough pics of her! Hotest on the show, hands down! Glad to see another farker has some taste rather than running directly to Claudia, who - though hot - is still a little overrated.

I liked Farscape
My wife hated it.

I'll be adding it to my sci fi collection.

Philly: Not the cool blue tree shaman chick. She was my favorite character, and they had to kill her off.

Apparently, Virginia Hey developed an allergy to her makeup, so her character had to go. Sad.

Kembada: ... and did anyone mention Joolushka Toonai Fenta Hovalis? No? Anyone?

God, I HATED Jool. Hate, hate haaaaaated. She was so incredibly annoying that I actually cheered when she died.

Sweet, the prices on the boxed sets were absurd. And a BR set might be worth getting a BR player too. Or just getting a PS3.

I loved Farscape. It always made me laugh and had decent stories. And frankly, I loved Ben Browder in his costume.
