Don't Stop Till You Get Enough still gets rocked at parties to this day.

on the 8/25/93 Dublin show (widely circulated in various forms, an absolutely pristine SBD, comparable to record label quality live release*), Bono dedicates "Bad" to Jacko.

Keep in mind this is juuuuuuuust when the news of him diddling kids, v1.0, had broken.

Bono says something like, "this goes out to Michael Jackson...I don't think you're bad....Just guilty of....being innocent."

and then the iconic opening notes to "Bad" start.

*Mine is original silver CD release under KTS label, "Zoo Europa". I bought it in a now-defunct record store called "Mayhem Records" on Santa Monica blvd in October 1993. I couldn't BELIEVE all the U2 bootlegs they had. I paid $75 for it, in 1993 dollars, when I was making about $400 a month in the US Navy. My friends thought I was stupid. WELL WHO'S STUPID NOW?

I still think Chris Tucker did the definitive version of "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," IMHO.

My business partner saw Stevie Wonder last Friday night and he did a whole MJ superset at the end of the show.

Best version of "Don't Stop" ever recorded. (The Embarrassment, circa 1980)

It was a nice gesture by Bono, but couldn't the band have, I dunno, learned the music or something close. All they did was continue playing "Angel of Harlem" verse progressions. They're 30-year veterans of touring and performing... I can't believe that they couldn't have come up with something close.

This coming from someone that likes U2 and loves "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

meh...Keller's cover was much better

You are aware that's not from the song you're talking about, right?

I knew someone was going to bring this up.

MJ died pretty recently, and U2 are not a lazy cover band. They could have just slapped together a cover that would have sounded like U2 slapped something MJ did together, but instead they inserted famous melodies into a song about another doomed black artist that fit perfectly into the chord sequence. Rather that than fark up the whole tribute song.

Is it me or does his voice sound crappy/flat?

I wish these guys would just kick out the jams...

T.rex 2009-07-01 05:38:25 PM
wow. they sound like utter crap, live. Bono reminds me of Robin Williams.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-07-01 07:43:59 PM
I had to trudge through 1:40 of one of U2's crappiest songs for 6 lines of MJ lyrics? blargh.

/twas a nice gesture though...

U2 still sucks. Nothing they can do can change that.

I'm a paid amateur at best and my band could have done a very reasonable rendition of either song with a week's notice. Compare that to 30-year veteran, professional, tight-as-a-drum bandmates... I just think they could easily have done better. I'm not saying they suck, I'm saying the exact opposite! They rocked "When Love Comes to Town" and "Helter Skelter" on Rattle and Hum for instance, so you know they can cover.

Screw that, here's Ultraviolet (new window)

Mega_Doof 2009-07-01 11:05:12 PM
They've done this sort of thing before, though. For example, when they played Live Aid 25 years ago the slipped in a reference to "Ruby Tuesday" over the chords of "Bad" (they're "Bad, "not MJ's "Bad."

When I saw them for the Zoo TV Outside broadcast tour 15-16 years ago Bono sang something (I can't remember it right now) over "Love Is Blindness."

that is one of my favorite songs by them. great live. so happy they brought that and other lesser played songs back this tour

\hopes to see them at Gillette on Sept. 20th

that was unbearable to watch.

Add me to the list of people really wanting to see "Ultraviolet" played live. Going to Chicago night 1.

Also, what they did for MJ was not a cover. Just inserted it into one of their songs. They do this all the time. U2 has a huge list of covers that they perform or record, look them up if your doubt their ability to come up with anything.

Uh, that's from "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," which is also a good MJ song.

U2 blows. So does Jacko... ah, I see what you did there. Very clever.

FredGarvin 2009-07-02 02:05:55 PM
Bah, pretty lame. Man in the Mirror is my favorite MJ song, too.

U2 never does any real covers because the edge was never competent enough to play anyone else's music.

They do what they do very well, though, and are a great live show. Maybe the best combination of a great rhythm section and a charismatic frontman ever.

puddleonfire 2009-07-02 02:23:41 PM
And I bet Bono clapped his hands in the air trying to get everyone else to do the same, because if it's one thing Bono is good at, it's urging people into action.

Odd, if you've read the U2 book that came out recently, Adam never got lessons till the mid 90s, Larry struggled without a metronome, and the Edge just couldn't play anyone else's music, fullstop.

And thank god for all those things, cause they made some great music of their own.
