Hiro's Protagonist: thefireandpassion: I don't think the Hawks will win their division next season. Losing Havlat and Khabibulin is a huge blow.

Hawks could keep Khabibulin if they can ditch Brian Campbell's $7.14mn salary and be able to sign Kane and Toews next year

Eh sure Campbell had a down season, but they'd have to trade Campbell away. He's not even a RFA. Also as good as Khabibulin was down the stretch and into the playoffs for the Hawks Khabi is getting old. They should let him go and find a young talent for the net that's not Huet.

Whamdangler: whereisian: They resigned Budaj. Link (new window)

Yes, I read about it, but in the article I read, they mentioned they were also going after a better, free-agent goalie. Budaj was a pathetic 20-29 or something last year. The "backup" wasn't any better.

I think they have their eyes on a few #1 goalers with Boods as backup. Worst case scenario is they can't manage the cap with Super Joe coming back and have to call up one of their better performing goaler prospects....which is not a bad option given their apparant youth and development movement.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hossa come back, but I don't think it'll happen. He seems to want to balance winning and getting a huge contract...which, at least this year, probably means the "winning" part won't happen.

epyonyx: Re-sign Mathieu Dandenault. He is a safe pick to replace Hossa, and he is familiar with the Wings style of play.

That's an interesting idea. Any idea what kind of contract he'd pull?

Oshawa: I first heard that Niedermayer resigning with the Ducks isn't a certainty last night. That would be a pure cripple for them after ditching Pronger (even though they got the kitchen sink for him).

Is anything that cripples the Ducks really a bad thing?

jekostas: Both Niedermayers have expressed an interest in playing in Vancouver (for a discount, no less) through their agents because of family issues.
Anaheim will make a hard pitch to keep them (Scott more than Rob, I would assume), of course.

Vancouver is looking to save money on jerseys, by having a roster full of players with the same last name.

Why, does Stevie Y really like sushi?

Steve Yzerman - Place of Birth: Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada

Steve Yzerman - But grew up in Nepean Ont. His work ethic was legend in the local rink there. By that logic he would also want to play in Ottawa.

Damn. I didn't want the Wings to keep Hossa - not at the amount of money he wanted, at least - but this is still a letdown, especially with him moving to another team in our division.

I promise not to pull an Idiot Penguins Fan and call him a traitor, though. Hossa seemed like a nice guy, and he definitely helped in the regular season.

I think this cements a Detroit/Chicago rivalry, for at least one season. The Hawks should sign Chelios, too, just to throw more fuel on that fire.

Except Chelios is old and bad. Waste of roster and cap space. He needs to retire.

Also when hasn't the Detroit/Chicago rivalry ever not been cemented?

Anyone with a half a brain thought the Red Wings would have a better shot to win the Stanley coming in to last season. Plus, it wasn't like Hossa grew up in the Pens organization...he was a hired (or traded) gun for them as well.

I get the "HAHA" part to his face, that's natural. The "traitor" part? Hell no. What the hell did he owe to the Penguins?

I certianly don't blame Hossa, but I do not understand the move. This seems like it has to be a short term deal or the Hawks could be in trouble. If it is short term, I don't think Hossa is doing himself any favors. I think he needs to find a place to settle down and establish himself.

Someone should tell the Avs management team that they need a goalie, not a backup. Spend the g*ddam money and get someone GOOD because there is going to be a LOT of rubber flying at the Avs net this year.

I'd give him a 2-3 year contract for no more than $1.5 mil/season.

Did I say good riddance to Hossa yet? I think he is a better fit into the Hawks system and could provide them with some needed leadership after this post-season. Will make the Hawks a better contender next year which will be cool.

If Samuelsson leaves, Wings are going to be hurting on the right side.

Katalyst 2009-07-01 02:07:51 PM
These long term contracts are getting ridiculous. They really have to be looked at in the next CBA.

It can't be 12 years. He's got like 7 left in him MAX. Even to avoid a larger cap hit this is a terrible idea. Unless you are betting that the cap will be disolved in the next 6 years or so.

WTF?!? So he took 1 mil a year more than the Wings were offering... and now Chicago is gonna have an interesting time with that whole cap thing...

thefireandpassion: Also when hasn't the Detroit/Chicago rivalry ever not been cemented?

That may have been a bad word choice. The rivalry's always there regardless of the sport, but thanks to Dollar Bill it's been dormant for a while, since the Blackhawks weren't putting up much of a fight.

Last year was good. After Hossa and the WCF, this year is going to be even better.

Killer Cars: I get the "HAHA" part to his face, that's natural. The "traitor" part? Hell no. What the hell did he owe to the Penguins?

If you believe the posters in the playoff threads, he "screwed" Pittsburgh over in the offseason last year. Of course, if Hossa had stayed, they wouldn't have Guerin (or a few of the other movs they made), and probably wouldn't have won the Cup.

I didn't say it was logical, or smart.

I remember the White Sox signing Jaime Navarro to a 7 or 8 year contract back in like 97. Lesson: Don't sign contracts longer than 5 years.

I can't help but get a bad feeling from this.

/White Sox have gone by this rule since then when it comes to players, especially pitchers.

I don't know, maybe he has more family connections or it is something else. For all I know, he also wanted a chance to play in Ottawa before retiring. However his family put down roots in Detroit, he was a franchise player, and had a textbook classy career right into management

That'll be a buyout in 5 years. Why do they keep giving these retarded contracts to guys about to hit their 30s? I understand stretching the contract to minimize the cap hit, but you're still going to end up wasting cash for a LONG time while you finish buying the contract. Look at the Islanders and the Yashin deal!

I think he did kind of "screw" the Penguins in that he waited awhile to decide which cost them some time working on other targets. But it worked out nicely for them, and the traitor aspect and booing was nonsense.
