I don't know, but the Avs are finally aware that they need a world-class goalie, and there are several free agents out there.

World class? After the last few years I think they'd be happy just to find a peewee goalie who's willing to get hit by the puck every now and then.

For what it's worth, the Sedin headlines below this were much more deserving of a greenlight. Alas, the world is sometimes unfair.

Heatley and Toronto belong together.

The Wild are shoppin' Harding around hard. Today is a big day for the Wild with a new GM, new HC, Gabby gone, and cap room to get busy.

So does Conklin end up with Philly today? Or Boston?

Sans the Rascal Flatts mask (at one point), he does have too solid of numbers to be a backup. Here, I'm hoping for a Koivu brothers season...although that might just be an IR replacement for Gaborik.

Outside of Heatley possibly being dealt, I don't expect anything big from the Sens this year... especially not today - July 1 is where the GMs make the most mistakes chasing UFAs.

(See Gomez, Drury, Briere, Redden, etc - all these guys who are available were all big money July 1 signings in previous years)

Yeah. Ideally, I would imagine he and Mason being 1a/1b guys next season, then Harding taking over next year. Realistically, I don't think either goalie would be happy with that. But of the goalies available, he's my pick.

The Devils should make a move or two if they know what's good for them. I was suprised they let Madden test the market.

Can I interest anyone in playing alongside some talented, up-and-coming young players in a borderline-decrepit arena on that fabulous bastion of suburbia known as Long Island?

Please?

Pretty please?

Ohlund, 7 years at 3.5M per...
Wonder if he got an NTC or NMC thrown in there... not that its really worth anything when it comes to Tampa

I think it will be interesting to see what Hossa does. I don't know of many teams that will be contenders in the next couple years who will offer him what he wants.

I think his best be it to try to pick the best team that is on the right track to be a contender like 5 years down the road.

If he is willing to take a discount to be on a contender, he should call Ken Holland back and ask "Any chance we can talk about that offer again?"

NTC: cant be traded to another team

NMC: cant be traded OR sent to the minors or reassigned.

Boris S. Wort: Okay, fill me in... what's the difference between a No Trade Contract and a No Movement Contract? Or is there one?

To Trade means you can't trade the player to another team without his permission. No Movement means you can't send the player down to the minors in an attempt to waive him and get his salary off the books.

As a Flames fan I was hoping the Sedins were leaving Vancouver, and Gillis almost snatched defeat from the claws of victory but actually pulled it off in the end.

Congrats Vancouver . . . 2009 / 2010 should have some fantastic Flames - Canucks games.

From what I've heard like 7 to 7.5 a season, might settle around 6. Wings were offering 4 because it's all they could offer.

Granted these are all just through the grape vine, so who knows the veracity of the numbers.

Sabres aren't going to do shiat, yet again. Sigh.

No, I take that back. They're going to let Jaro Spacek (the best defenseman on the team last season) walk away as a UFA for nothing in return.

Damn you Darcy. I hate you.

a4dzac [TotalFark] 2009-07-01 12:52:28 PM
Where is the Cammalleri talk...I think he'd be a good fit here as well.

Goddamn Gillis, good work!

Too bad Ohlund went for peanuts to Tampa bay. 3.2M a year? Really long contract for a guy starting to wear down, though.

Alright, we need a first line winger, third-line winger and a good D. Make it happen

Katalyst 2009-07-01 12:52:38 PM
Kovalev re-signs with the Habs. 2 years. 8.8.

whereisian: They resigned Budaj. Link (new window)

Yes, I read about it, but in the article I read, they mentioned they were also going after a better, free-agent goalie. Budaj was a pathetic 20-29 or something last year. The "backup" wasn't any better.

Well I wouldn't call it a double whammy, as they will be fine without him and will be able to bring up some developing players because of it. However, it certainly is not their first choice and will make Chicago a whole lot better to give Detroit some significant division competition.

The length of the contract is just to get his cap hit down. He won't be playing there for 7 years. Excellent mentor for Hedman. Good signing.

It better be a real short contract, then. Havlat was asking for less on a long term deal but Chicago couldn't bit because of Kane and Toews coming out of entry-level contracts after next year.

Yeah...

Strib's Russo: "TSN's Darren Dreger is reporting Marian Hossa is close to signing in Chicago. If true, Hawks may need to hire some mathematicians from MIT to get Kane and Toews done next summer. Unless he's signing another one-year deal."

The Lightning have a really bad habit of signing guys to contracts that are way too long. With the Lightning ownership though, unless there's a no movement clause, the length is pretty much meaningless.

Kind of creates an interesting dynamic, no? Chicago going after Hossa, Philadelphia getting Pronger, Bruins going after Kaberle... all these teams with good young players trying to gear up for a Cup run "right now" while they can still keep all those good young players and not lose them as RFAs.

I said it last night in the Kessel thread:

If Slats gives up any combination of Girardi, Callahan or Dubinsky to get Heatley, I'll swim across the river and kick his balls to the roof of his smart mouth.
