The foolish protagonist calls out to the children, who slowly turn to regard him in the nearby entrance, all wearing some variation of this mask to cover gaunt, unnatural features such as blank eyes and sharpened teeth, maws caked in dried human blood.

Pretty much this - it's no different than selling band-aids with the kids' fave cartoon characters on it; it's just the particular implement was a little more scary than something we have to deal with now for the most part.
