lacrossestar83: Does anyone have video of Brazil's goalie (is it Julio Cesar?) doing the motorboat mouth thing? I think it was in the second half, right after some kind of blown play by Brazil, and a slow-mo replay showed him going "PHBHBHBHBHHBHBBHBHHBHHBH". I'm really upset that I didn't tivo it for that clip alone.

I had one, but it was too big for fark, so I'll give you a link

Yanks_RSJ: How is a $2 plastic horn "culture?"

If they want to allow them during matches played by South Africa, that's fine, but if I have to listen to that crap for three weeks straight, there are going to be murders.

If you think that was bad, wait until next month at the Azteca for the US vs. Mexico qualifier. The Mexicans blow those horns too, I watched their last qualifier at home and the buzzing noise was far worse than at any point of the Confed Cup. Probably because instead of 30 or 40 thousand fans, there are over 100,000.

The idea that this is some sort of unique African soccer culture thing is just bats though. I saw those horns at the last US qualifier at Soldier Field too.

I agree with the posters concerning the longkazoo's. I think that the networks could just eq down the crowd mikes and it would make a world of difference. But after awhile, I got used to it and it didn't bother me so much. I didn't like it, I am just blessed with selective hearing. I would much rather hear chants, drums, and horns(the brass kinds) of the supporters.

Considering horns like that were epidemic at the minor league hockey venue I went to for the last 3 years, I don't think they have squat to do with culture.

Unless someone can convince me that South African culture has transplanted itself to the Denver CO suburbs and is highly interested in what could best be termed Double-A minor Ice Hockey.

Hell, we had horns like that where I grew up in North Dakota during the mid 1980's. They were your typical 50 cent prize giveaway at high school carnival fund raisers.

Ugh no freaking horns at all. People should just do proper songs and chanting at matches and by that I don't mean DEFENSE.

i thought the stadium had been surrounded by south africanized bees

Damn you Western wusses, we've had those plastic horns for 40 years in Mexico, had 2 WHOLE WORLD CUPS 1970 and 1986 and nobody complained then... and SA hasn't got Azteca stadium where 110,000 screaming bastards in green hang Donovan in effigy (and buzz like Japanese hornets). Quit whining about the vuvuzela and your nancy songs. You want chants, go to Argentina and listen to la 12 cheer for Boca!

Soccer in the US just needs enough support to keep the MLS going so it can continue to feed our best into Europe.

It also doesn't attract the best athletes in the US. But that's not so terrible. Iniesta and Xavi aren't exactly physical specimens.

I think they need to really start focusing on developing academies. Hell, even require each franchise to develop it's own academy. The sport will grow as the home-grown talent grows.

That's why it's the best major sport IMO. A guy the size of Messi could never be the best player in the world in baseball, basketball or football. Skill is paramount in soccer, athleticism is distant second.
