Pretty sure it only counts those with the TV on while the game is happening live and does not include DVR or ESPN 360.

I think I remember hearing that on a podcast (that ratings don't include TiVo and the like) but I'm not 100% certain.

Either way, good showing.

Those horns were a bit annoying. I bet it made communication at field level super tough. Hopefully they won't be allowed at WC'10.

Now lets see if some of that audience begins to follow the US through the rest of qualification. The numbers there could prove interesting

Agreed as well. I haven't followed MLB in two years because I've lost interest in it. But that's not going to make me go into a baseball thread and start hating on it. Even just to troll for trolling purposes.

Don't feed the troll. I refer to The Divine Ponytail's post from once ago when people like him troll:

The Divine Ponytail: Soccer Hater,
You love these threads. This is your chance - you know you shouldn't care but yet you find yourself here, a fark subscriber, maybe even a Totalfarker, typing your pithy clever posts with a speed and conviction that makes you feel a proud sense of accomplishment.

Each post more scathing and less witty than the one before. You find yourself foaming at the mouth and breathing through your nose with a rage that you can not place...but wait...there it is, a memory...

high school...you are a closet fan, your physicality and timidity always kept you sequestered in the classroom behind a computer screen, but you hoped against all hope, secretly wishing you had the skill and stamina to hang with the soccer players, those guys moved through school with a nonchalance that drove you nuts, perfect hair, perfect physiques, top of their class, teachers loved them, girls loved them...these guys weren't soft and doughy like football players, their smiles weren't stained with skoal bandit like those baseball hicks;

no these guys made the grades, were scoring on the pitch, and scoring with the babes at school - ohh, how you imagined yourself running 90 minutes, slide tackling, cutting through the defense with grace and power, scoring the winning goal on a diving header in front of your hot girlfriend - then the bell rings, you're back.

You run to the bathroom, perspiring, one look at your pasty complication and your frail frame and you realize with bitter bitter anger that will never be you. But, alas, there is always fark, and a cadre of hackneyed soccer haters to which you can feel attached...so what if you're recycling each other's material, so what because finally...finally you belong.

You stupid douche...I was just pointing out that the soccer nuts have been predicting that the sport would become huge in the US in just a few years...and they've been predicting that since Pele played for the NY Cosmos.

For the record, I used to be a rabid FC Bayern fan (lived in Munich during their glory days in the 70s), so just STFU, douche.

Amusing, but I doubt that describes anyone's high school experience.

Honestly, at my school, the real hardcore, high-endurance athletes did crew (i.e. rowing) and cross-country. The slightly less hardcore but still high-endurance athletes did hockey and lacrosse. And yeah, the big fat guys who were strong but low-stamina played football. I'm not sure if my high school even had a soccer team. Maybe as an intramural or club sport.

Oh that shiat just killed me. I watched it live so it wasn't as bad as what happened to you, but just figuring out what channel the freaking game on was amazingly stupid. ESPN didn't have it on their own site listing at all for a while.

How hard is it to just update listings?

Crew and lacrosse in high school are pretty uncommon outside of really upper-crust areas and prep schools.

I think all of our soccer players were pretty fit but I don't think they were the creme de la creme.

Doesn't stop us from enjoying it? Are you mad? Second-tier popularity is the best thing to happen to U.S. soccer. Just enough money and popularity to keep a league alive, but not enough for the major networks to turn it all to shiat.

Do you want sky-high ticket prices so no one with a Fark-class salary can afford to see games on anything other than network TV? Do you want TV timeouts every five minutes? Do you want sideline reporters asking inane questions? Do you want on-screen graphics and "swoosh" sound effects completely obscuring what's going on in the field? Do you want slow-motion instant replay from 20 different angles and talking head analysis drawing on the screen while play is still going on? Do you want the networks to cut away from the action when only 5 minutes are left in the game to show the opening minutes of a game between big market teams? Do you want the networks and league colluding to change the rules so the dumbest casual fans get the high-scoring games they want?

Be very careful what you wish for. I don't want soccer to ever catch the attention of U.S. TV networks.

Does anyone have video of Brazil's goalie (is it Julio Cesar?) doing the motorboat mouth thing? I think it was in the second half, right after some kind of blown play by Brazil, and a slow-mo replay showed him going "PHBHBHBHBHHBHBBHBHHBHHBH". I'm really upset that I didn't tivo it for that clip alone.
