Yeah, the Sox basically looked like Billy Mays after his plane landed at the start of the 7th inning.

i mean... this was the kind of game that the orioles needed getting ready to head out to the west coast, plus it always feels good to hand the red sox or the yankees their asses.
there's also a bit of schadenfreude in a papelbon blown save-- his first ever against the orioles.

deadsanta 2009-07-01 06:18:07 AM
That was incredibly painful to watch... pitch after pitch by a usually solid bullpen were slow, middle-middle meatballs. I mean, my god, what a brutal thing to do to John Smoltz after a great start.

/knew we were jinxed as soon as idjit commentators started droning on about "dominating the Orioles".
//the rally cap, it does something. For Ballmer.

SymphonyXtasy 2009-07-01 06:29:39 AM
Yeah, it pretty much sucked. It was like four teams played that night; two before the long rain delay, and two after.

H31N0US 2009-07-01 06:57:35 AM
The old "the other team didn't beat us, we beat ourselves" line is bs and insulting to the team that did, in fact, beat you.

What's with all you Farkers saying this game sucked? It was awesome!!!

It brings to mind a pet peeve of mine. The unwritten rule that you don't steal on a team when you're up big. I understand the sportsmanship behind it, but it's not like the team that's losing is going to agree to stop trying to score runs. They're pros and there's no room for sympathy.

/go O's!
//let's take 2 out of 3 from these turkeys

vikingfan [TotalFark] 2009-07-01 07:26:53 AM
I'm guessing the Sox mentally checked out of this game a little too early - they're up 9-1 and the entire infield runs off the field with only 2 outs in the sixth.

AnthraxRipple [TotalFark] 2009-07-01 07:27:23 AM
I really wish I had stayed up for the end of the game, just so hear Eck react.

I laughed so hard when Youk started to the dugout with 2 outs and 4 other guys followed suit. In retrospect that was the turning point. The bullpen was doomed.

skinink 2009-07-01 07:31:20 AM
Maybe the Red Sox could have stopped the Orioles' comeback if they only had to get two for each of the remaining three innings.

ugh. bad game, but still only one game. shake it off guys. I still trust this bullpen over any other one in the league.

From the comments:

"This is proof that the season is too early to call in the East race. I knew it all along the Orioles are going to take the division, and win the World Series this year. This is a team that has proven to play like champions. They have the most talent in baseball, and the greatest pitching staff in all of baseball. This team will make there run for first place domination after the All Star break, you'll see."

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but that's just fu*king delusional.

Of course the Yankees fan thinks that's what the headline means. The historic victory -- in which the Red Sox took part -- was not over the Orioles. It was over the Red Sox. Hence, it was over themselves.

I can see that...ok sry.

I still can't believe the USA lost that game. All they had to do was play freakin defense for 45 minutes.

As a relatively native Baltimorean, I must say it's games like this that renew my hate for the Orioles - Either suck, or be good, stop doing both!

/They will lose their next game by a franchise record just to keep things in perspective

jaylectricity [TotalFark] 2009-07-01 09:19:52 AM
Never mind the bullpen having a bad night. How in the hell did the Orioles' bullpen hold the Sox scoreless?

DJLobo 2009-07-01 09:20:15 AM
Great win and it's nice to see that Felix Pie has learned how to hit and field since he's been on the bench most of the month.

afxjzs 2009-07-01 09:29:12 AM
I hope this was the bullpen just getting all their suck out at once. It would have been nice if they waiting until we were already getting blownout, but whatever.

THIS type of game is why I'm more excited for my O's than I have been in years. Now I'm no fair weather fan, and I love my birds through it all, but there hasn't been this kind of energy around the team for as long as I can remember. We aren't a playoff team this year, but I honestly think we can break .500. I hope so, since the last time they had a winning season I was 11!

YES! The top of their lineup is very solid, they have some speed, athleticism and just enough power to scare you a little. They also have a ROY candidate in Reimold, and Wieters is starting to find his stroke. The pitching is still pretty bad (OK, it's atrocious) but at least there's reason to believe that help is on the way next year.

Still a long way to go, but at least I feel like we're heading in the right direction.

I am guilty of saying "Yankees beat themselves", but I haven't used that line since I got over the denial phase in Oct 2004, when I realized that no, the Red Sox beat the Yankees against impossible odds, and deserved all the credit in the world for it.

Since then, I said I would not use that cop out line again, either when my favorite team got beat or I got beat at something personally.

I think it's both. In order to blow a 10-1 lead in the 7th, the other team has to do something amazing AND you have to fark up. The amazing thing by itself, or the major farkup by itself, isn't enough to make it happen. Major credit and derision are both in order.

I think it's equal parts the Orioles have a really good young offensive lineup, and the Red Sox kind of checked out after the rain delay and didn't get themselves geared back up to finish the game out. You could see it in that other link when they though there were three outs and left the field early. It's disappointing, because you'd think these guys get paid enough to motivate themselves after such a long delay.

No. Although the picture below your post screams to be captioned CHEER UP EMO CLOSER!

The O's are my local team and damn if they aren't on the verge of being really good. If they got some pitching they'd definitely be in the mix. I enjoy watching them except when they're beating the snot out of my Yankees as seems to be their habit lately. So yeah, good game last night, Birdies.

That's hardly the same as leading by 9 runs in the 7th inning.

Whatever-- it's still only one game.

GimpyNip 2009-07-01 11:07:08 AM
Despite the loss, it was an exciting game. It isn't often you see a team blow a 9 or 10 run lead. Most people I know missed it, though. They thought that the game would be called and even if it didn't the lead was safe enough to sleep on. It was like the Mother's Day Miracle...except with the O's winning.

I was semi-watching at the gym, so i didn't see the 8th. I did watch him make short work of the sox for a few of the innings before that. did he look like he was tiring at the end or was he just a victim of the pitch count/rookie arm-save maneuver?
