I love Black Label Society. Their gritty style of music is awesome and I must say that their album "Hangover Music Volume VI" is indeed perfect for hangovers.

The bonus with BLS is that they are one of the Metal bands that my girlfriend likes. I'm pretty sure she finds Zakk Wylde's voice to be sexy.

"He's not coimin' bwaaack"

I always pictured the South Park guys singing In The River.

Good jam from a solid group. Thanks subby

I slept through BLS both years I saw them.

MAN I hate this band. HAAYYOOOOWWWW HOWWW YOOOOOWWWWW

Zakk Wylde is a total joke these days but Book of Shadows was pretty sweet, and even more southern fried than his brand of "metal". pride and glory is cool I guess but I never listen to that. barely ever listen to Zakk Wylde music. BLAH. this riff...chug chug chug chug chug chug *harmonics* chug chug chug widdleeeoooo chug chug chug chug

if I want chug chug I'll listen to Nevermore. their chug chug is good chug chug

Hell, that wasn't even metal. More like country-fried rock. Wah-wahs have no place in metal.

Will my dooooom! always be denied? Seriously, we need some non-Sabbath doom here. BLS sucks by the way.

My Submission: Solitude Aeturnus - Destiny Falls to Ruin (new window)

I've been listening to stuff that barely qualifies as metal this week, but it's stuff I enjoy, so I'm posting them anyways.

Avrigus: I guess you could call this a "wedding-gown" metal band (thanks to whoever came up with that), but it's not really metal and has a church like vibe to the music.

Alcest: Post-black, nostalgia inducing, nice sounding music. the phrase "Extremely pleasant on the ears" sums up Alcest perfectly.

Wardruna: Tribal, primitive sounding folk music. Rhythmic, ritualistic drums and traditional folk instruments combined with chanting vocals combine to make this band enthralling.

I am still baffled at this guy. Are we totally sure this is the same Zakk Wylde who played with Ozzie some years ago? Damn he really needs to lay off the steroids. I mean really.

It's from the Evanescence thread earlier this week where someone used "wedding gown" metal to refer to bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation.

Dee Snarl 2009-06-28 10:05:01 PM
These guys suck. I remember watching them at Ozzfest a few years ago, and being shocked and appalled at what a bunch of wanky, amateurish bar-rock was being passed off to my fellow mouth-breathers as world-class metal. It sounded like Zack was gonna be the biggest dork in the world, and jump into "Eruption." And then... he went into "Eruption"!! Bwahaahhahaa!!! EPIC FAIL

Woohoo, change of pace on the SHMHC! Excellent to see, thank you to whoever submitted. I listen to BLS frequently, it's my set of cruising tunes.

Other tunes:

Superterrorizer w/ shoutout to Limp Bizkit (new window)

Counterfeit God w/ Mark Wahlberg cameo (new window)

13 Years of Grief (new window)

Demise of Sanity (new window)

Zakk also has a rather interesting catalog of acoustic work which his voice seems to work with quite well.

darkjezter 2009-06-28 10:38:29 PM
Good pick, subby. I've been a BLS fan for a while now, and saw them in concert at the beginning of May. IMO their two best albums are 1919 Eternal and The Blessed Hellride. I love their gritty brand of southern metal/sludge metal.

Plus, Zakk Wylde is a really classy guy. I remember reading a news article a while back where Zakk encountered a young fan who wanted to learn guitar but couldn't afford one, so Zakk took him to the nearest music store and told him he could have any guitar he wanted. Zakk then gave the kid and his family tickets (complete with backstage passes) to the Ozzy concert he was in town to play.

Another cool Zakk Wylde story I heard involved him playing an acoustic set at a Hard Rock Cafe. People were lined up outside the cafe hoping to see Zakk play, so he told the manager of the restuaurant that he wanted to buy all of them drinks. A little while later Zakk's wife came up to him and asked him why they were being billed for literally thousands of dollars worth of drinks. Zakk, of course, paid his tab without complaint.

Plus, I once saw him scissor kick Angela Lansbury.

I very much appreciate your doooooom! Great picks there.

Here are some more.

Witchcraft- Some good raw sound, with clean vocals. They have some great riffs, not nearly as boring as most other popular doom bands out there.

The Sword I love these guys. Awesome riffs. Sounds a bit like Ozzy (which is not a bad thing). Cheesy lyrics often based on George Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. Good stuff.

Mastodon (2 parts) I love plugging for Mastodon. They never cease to blow me away. Complex metal, amazing guitar work, and the best drummer on the planet. Epic is cliched but is a pretty apt word. A bit long, be sure to listen to part 2.

BLS outside of Book of Shadows is lame. Well, i haven't listen to book of shadows in a long-ass time, so that might be lame too. i'm workin' on memory here, folks. that's my two cents, and i'll post some doom links tomorrow morning, if i'm up to it. word.

Madbassist1 [TotalFark] 2009-06-29 08:08:00 AM
I don't particularly care for Zakk for reasons already touched on in this thread. He sounds...I don't know, generic...or something. I can't quite put my finger on it.

Having said that, Thank god for the change of pace...

On an unrelated note, Driving to work this morning, I heard Mastadon being played on the radio. That in and of itself is just freaking wierd, but I recognized the song as the one they slaughtered on "Letterman" a while back. It was pretty good. If they are attempting to go mainstream (obviously) here's wishing them luck, and I hope they don't sell out too bad.

If you want to get into Solitude, I would suggest starting with the album Beyond the Crimson Horizon. If you want to hear more bands in that style I suggest Candlemass and Doomsword (coolest name ever).

BallZach: Witchcraft- Some good raw sound, with clean vocals. They have some great riffs, not nearly as boring as most other popular doom bands out there.

I love Witchcraft, am indifferent towards Mastodon, and hate The Sword (although I love ASOIAF. Get off your ass and finish the books Martin!).

Good Southerny sounding metal: Pagan Altar, who the more I listen to, the more I'm convinced that they may be the best band ever.

My one complaint about Down is that a number of their songs end up sounding the same to me when it's on in the background. I do enjoy them though, especially Dog Tired for some reason I cannot articulate at this early hour.
