It's always sad when a child dies, but especially when she has decent parents. Odds are, she would have turned out better than the millions of kids being born with parents dreaming of free mortgages and car payments now that Obama is President.

And what was she "publicly thanking god" for? That her child died? I don't...see anything to thank anybody for.

Well, if she really has faith, then she'd believe her child is in a better place now.

When I was a kid, I was playing soccer on a field used both by my school and by some old people near by for horseshoes. The old people had left a steel stake hammered into the ground, and nobody had cleared the field before the game. I fell right on it (it went clean through my knee). I remember as my parents were taking me back to school two days later, the priciple asked if they would need the name of the legal contact for the school, and all my mom said was "no, it was just an accident, that's why we have health insurance." It's just weird, because I know there are good people out there like the lady in this story, and like my mom... people who aren't ligitious pricks... but we get bombarded by douchebags looking to make an easy buck so often that it's just too easy to get cynical and think that everyone is just out there to rip someone else off.

Chances are, she's thanking Him for the time she had with her daughter. She'll mourn, she even will gets pissed off at God for doing that too damn early [and it's okay to get angry about that], but there is this confidence-- this thing called faith-- that she will see Maya one day.

How about the fact that she got almost 10 years with a wonderful daughter? Happy memories? The ability to look at the situation with grace and see the spiritual side?

I only hope that if my daughter dies, I respond with such love and grace instead of wallowing in bitterness or self-pity.

Sometimes a good dose of fatalism can be a good thing. This woman accepts that things happen outside our control and no one's to blame. Combine that realization with a sense of personal responsibility, spread liberally across the human population and see the world get a little better. Also you'll see fewer lawyers.

Maybe I just dont get it but "Hey thanks for the time I got, it's alright that you killed her for no good reason at the age of freaking nine :D" doesn't sound...that's just scary. That makes me fear for people that someone can think that way.

"Thanks for giving me her" is sensible, but not acknowleding that that also means he ripped her away is just...creepy.

Cervidanti: It's extremely unsettling that the mom is just fine and dandy.

What exactly is unsettling about a person able to come to terms with the idea that some things just happen and there isn't squat we can do about it?

One if the biggest problems in today's society is that every time something bad happens we automatically jump on the blame game. Sometimes this is appropriate, such as when a train crashes that was overdue for a break inspection, or a bridge collapses that was overdue for repair work. Oftentimes it is not. Some friends of my family recently had their 3 month old daughter die in her sleep as a result of sudden infant death syndrome. (new window) There was nothing that anyone knows for sure they could have done to prevent it, and for them to have immediately started pointing fingers instead of accepting the loss, as painful as it was, would have been wrong.

However, quiet acceptance isn't very exciting, and it doesn't make a very good story in our 24 hour news era. So now anytime something unexpected happens the reporters start poking and prodding to try to start up a bit of gossip that they can feed of off until their next meal come along.

The solution is to start tuning these people out. I watch the national news every morning to stay current on events, but the moment they turn to gossip and speculation I switch over to a local station or the history channel. I know I'm only one person, but I like to think that even one less person playing into their faux drama is better than none.

Considering that the article directly contradicted that claim (the mom said she got it from her daughter) and the daughter could have easily picked it up from school (sounds like they had another student die from H1N1), I'd say that your statement is in dire need of a [citation needed].

"Gods grace and mercy is wonderful"

That is amazing, that someone could lose a child to a disease, and still think god is merciful and wonderful.

God, could have kept your girl from ever getting the disease. He did not, I guess his compassion and wonder was tied up in helping sports stars make baskets or touch downs and other trivial sheit.

God could have cured the girl after she got sick, he could have kept her alive and helped her fight off the disease. But he didnt, his mercy must have been dedicated to more trivial sheit, ever notice that? How god is so busy making statues bleed and appearing on toast to actually perform any real worthwhile feats? He is said to be capable of making the blind see and the lame walk, but for the most part he has not gotten up off his ass in near 2000 years to lift a finger, well besides the sports stars making goals. He is a big fan of that, and helping bad musicians get awards..

God seems a lot less like a general mighty all encompassing deity, and more like a minor deity of parlor tricks. Like the deity of making cows fart and the goddess of "when you yawn your soul doesnt fly out of your body" or some other crap. God is pritty farking pathetic.

So yeah, go ahead and thank him for all his deeds that are completely minor and stupid. Meanwhile your kid is dead while his sorry arse had to make an appearance on a moldy wall under an overpass..

You'd be right.

I was diagnosed with twwo herniated discs in my back, and got a nice little questionnaire from my insurance company, basically asking me to outline who they could pin the blame on.
