There is something 'fundamentally wrong about picking on the smokers all the time,' said Carey

Gotta agree with him there. Just let Darwin mow them down so we don't have to pay their medical bills after they grow old.

Meh, many smokers have "quit" in that they are no longer buying "legal" cigarettes. The taxes combined with the fire (un)safe cigarettes are driving people to the grey/black market.

When the black market is significantly cheaper and higher quality than the white market, people/government REALLY need to stop and take a look at what they are doing and ask if they perhaps should rethink their policies.

Nobody where I live buys black market booze. It's no any cheaper and lower in quality than what they can buy at the store even with the taxes. Sure there is a grey market for the underage adults of course.

My quitting roughly coincided with the tax increase but was done mostly out of self-respect.

Anyone want to guess how long it will take to "fix" that?

But the joy of irritating you sanctimonious assholes who fly into pointless rage about my smoking keeps me going.

May stay that way indefinitely, if only because of the minimal economic impact on cigarette manufacturers. Same as being able to brew your own beer, prohibiting it wouldn't make anybody any more money to speak of.

I'm on my last carton now. Florida just raised the per cartoon tax by $10. That is in addition to the federal tax increase on them we had earlier this year. This brings the price to (for generic pieces of shiat mind you) $39 a carton. fark that, I'll smoke weed instead. Hell, I can make $50 of herb last longer than $50 in cigarettes. Bastards!

"Hahaha, look at my lungs you bastards! HAHAHAHAHA! I GOT YOU!"

Can think of better reasons to smoke than to piss people off, though it certainly does that, too (mostly the smelling like pig shiat part).

I would kill for $40 cartons. If you're looking for pity for your prices, don't look to Canada or Europe. I'm sure there's some south americans and chinese who think that's a lot for smokes, though.

When I started smoking, Newports were $7.99 a carton and Marlboros were $.99 a pack. Oh well, that was 22 years ago.

Those of you on the east coast who live in NY/FL are keeping the town of Smithfield, NC rolling in money. For thoseof you not in the know, there's this store called JR's, and they will sell you up to ten cartons of a given manufacturer at a time. Yeah, they sell other knockoff items such as perfume and NASCAR collectibles, but that store is there to make money off of people traveling to/from high cigarette tax states.

I saw a sign for a carton of Camels for 75 bucks the other day. I couldn't imagine how broke I would be if I still smoked cigarettes. Only Marijubacco for me

I will admit that I don't pay much attention to the issue, but can anyone explain to me why the FDA shouldn't regulate tobacco?

eggi541 2009-06-28 03:23:47 PM
I dunno about the guy who wrote the article, but I do not know of a single person who has quit smoking due to any recent tax increases. If smokes go up too much more, I spose I shall have to start importing my own smokes. The border is not too far away.

What's really retarded is, assume for one minute that every smoker simply did quit. Well now who or what is going to fund the programs being funded by smoke tax? All the whiners who claim smoking is costing them money will then get to fund those programs. LOL.

Large tobacco companies have lobbyists. Most of the new regulations are purely anti-competitive.

Where can I get these smokes of which you speak? I'd be on that like a dog on a steak.

Pfhor 2009-06-28 03:33:44 PM
Go tax cigarettes more... but the logic behind it also means you should raise tax of most everything else. I personally find that it won't make me stop smoking but I will smoke less, which will in no way may anyone healthier. People that don't pay for their health insurance get the benefit of more of my money going to help them. Sure, I don't mind, I still smoke. But at least we should be fair and raise the taxes on everything else that people buy that cause major health issues: Candy, fried food, liquor, salt, bacon, all the good things that make life enjoyable. Maybe we can even offer a tax refund on people based on how much exercise they get. Because while you're eating your tofu salad, wearing a mask to keep out "pollution", and yelling at people for poisoning your air, rigorous exercise is really the only thing proven to keep you healthy. And even that only works for most people.

Indeed. There are thriving producers of counterfeit tobacco seals, including Russian mobsters and even Hezbollah. Indian reservation sales are booming.

What does amaze me sometimes is that so many of the pro-pot people say little or nothing about the ongoing delegalization of tobacco, either because tobacco is somehow a competitor or "corporate".

I've stopped and have no intention of starting up again but some FARKer whose handle I don't recall in a thread I can't remember said something along the lines of "cigarettes have given tobacco a bad name".

hellbilly 2009-06-28 03:38:38 PM
This guy has a lot of work ahead of him. I cut tobacco for free growing up, because my family owned a few allotments, and it is hard work at every stage of the process. But, if he cures it properly, then it will be quite tasty tobacco. You'd be surprised what's in pre-rolled cigarettes, which is why I roll my own from quality suppliers. And it makes a great spliff.

Deathfrogg 2009-06-28 03:39:53 PM
When I started smoking you could get a carton of Marbs for $2.75 and they were 35-40 cents a pack. The first smoke I ever had was in 6th grade, kid who was already a pack a day smoker passed one around at lunch behind the big backstop on the softball field. I still remember his name.

The first pack I ever had to myself, was given to me by a super hot 20-something blonde with bigotiddies in a red and white marlboro skintight leather outfit (jacket zipper at just above the bellybutton, no shirt), driving a courier pickup painted up like a marlboro box, and she was passing them out to all the kids coming out of school. That was when I was in 8th grade. She parked the truck two blocks away next to this little crappy lunch counter restaurant across the street from the local high school where all teh bums used to hang out for their $1 breakfast.

She gave out a free pack to anyone who asked, even my freinds little sister who was in 6th grade at the time. She had lighters, t-shirts, hats and keychains all with the company logo on them. That was 1978.

I'm pretty sure thats illegal now.

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2009-06-28 03:41:31 PM
Oh, and they just raised the taxes on smokes in Nova Scotia. A pack of (Nothing quite tastes like a) Belmonts costs $13.50 now. A pack.

Besides nicotine itself, that is without question the most enjoyable part of smoking. There are very few things in the world more satisfying than silently smoking at someone who is being a childish prick about it. And there are a lot of you out there.

PROTIP: Asking someone politely to smoke elsewhere is more likely to achieve the desired effect.

Maybe never? Sales tax only applies when you sell something.

(Though 7,000 plants does seem quite a lot for "personal use")

You should try that in Canada. Even the police will ask you politely to butt out.

Unless he's carrying a fire extinguisher full of bear mace.

I got jumped on in TF discussion the other day for mentioning that little point. Apparently the two are not related, never mind the fact that if its illegal to smoke even a cigarette, it'll always be illegal to smoke a joint.

logruszed 2009-06-28 03:50:09 PM
I smoke, I know it's bad for me, and so long as the tax actually is used to offset medical costs directly related to my habit I'm not biatching about it.

How about taxing food that contributes to cardiovascular disease; which the AMA and other medical agencies state costs more and kills more than smokes.

Now fark off.
