Call me when you get a week or two of triple digits. Then we'll sit down over a couple of beers and talk about the heat.

It's going to be cooler and in the mid-80s here today

Also, the temperature will be down.

Uh oh, this is going to be another one of those "I'm used to that weather so you all suck for not being used to it when it hits your country" threads. That was fun, this winter, when we got the first bit of snow in 20 years and thousands of Fark comments told us how lame we are for not 'manning up', and how you have to deal with 10x worse, whilst working 26 hours a day, walking uphill both ways for work. All that happened was our buses couldn't drive.

Anyway, I love the heat, so i'm looking forward to this one. Last night we had a pretty huge storm, plenty of lightning (though no doubt to all of you Farkers it was a weak event barely qualifying to use the term "storm", but it flooded one of my offices, so that's going to be fun tomorrow.

This is really about old people, not you and me, unless you're old, but old people die when it gets too hot. That's why it's being mentioned in the news.

Heh. We're cooling off 10° to 88° tomorrow from the last week and a half of 95+. And hell it wasn't even that bad here, the dewpoints kept below 65° for the most part.

I can't wait to see all the comments from people who work in air-conditioned offices and live in homes with central air telling the Brits to man up.

Kinda this. We in the States forget that a lot of European homes don't have central air because it's never been necessary. Every few years there's a heat wave that rivals average temperatures in the southern U.S. Their normal summer is a lot more mild than ours.

Other advice in the government's heatwave plan includes to drink cold drinks like water or fruit juice regularly and avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.

Asking Brits to avoid tea and alcohol? That's like asking them to avoid breathing.

Wow, at 86°F I hope those Brits will be safe and okay. I remember it used to get that hot back when I lived up in Montana, and we actually broke a sweat when that happened.

On another note, I hope none of those Brits visit Las Vegas this week because we're going to hit 106°F. They most certainly do not want to experience that. It would just be too overwhelming for their fragile little bodies.

I hope they do visit Las Vegas this week. Old people who die from heat, like the article is talking about, who then go to to a really hot place must just be looking for a form of assisted suicide, that way everyone's happy.

Yeah..what eddy said. It's one thing when this sort of temperature is normal like it is for much of America..but when you don't have things like air conditioning to deal with the heat, it's altogether different.

OK, it's probably not life-threatening unless you're old or frail. But it's pretty damned unpleasant.

About 95 degrees F. here - that's a good 10 above our 'normal' summer temps so we actually have the A/C on, but it's not good for that much delta T so it's only the 3rd day this year.

86 with an RH of 95% is plenty hot for the human body, elderly and young esp.

It's been relatively cool in the southern Great Lakes region, I.E. NW OH. and as the one chap said, if you're not used to it, it's extreme weather.

Loves me some 65 to 70 F.

Loves me some cold assed, biblical, ice age winters if the heat works and I'm indoors.

Going outside in it, not quite so much.

Grandma never had ANY air in a town that hit 100 a few times a year so, yeah, not a lot of sympathy from me on 86. Hell, when my AC has gone out this year we're talking triple digits and moderately high humidity.

I am curious about how 86 could be considered dangerously hot, and I mean that with no snark at all. Maybe uncomfortable if you aren't used to it, but is it ever really dangerous?

Cos it's farking hot in sturdy brick houses built to withstand what feels like 300ft of rain a year, snow and gales. We haven't got houses built for sunshine. It would just make us feel more pants for the lack of it.

This.

Went for a hike this morning at 7am. Temp was a pleasant but damp 89. Got back to my car, up to a muggy 96... at 8:11 in the morning. The high here today will be 107 with a chance for t-storms this afternoon because it's the monsoon season, which makes it nice and icky. Puke-o-rama.

Grew up in this weather with nothing more than a swamp cooler and fans; central air was for p*ssies. On the hot days, you stayed inside and stayed quiet - Mom didn't let us out after the temp passed 105 until sundown.

Indiana (where I'm from) and Chicago (where I am currently) average mid 80s during the summer. I lived in Germany in the summer of 2003 when all those old French people died. It was like spending a summer in the midwest. I lived in Germany again in 2007 and it only went above 80 maybe 3 times I was there. Though I left before August hit.
