Anguished cry from the "Legalize heroin" crowd strangely absent.

They must be out looking for their connect.

They aren't even targeting marijuana growers in the U.S. They are mainly targeting low level non violent drug offenders, and handing out long prison sentences that keep the prison population (and costs) large.

At least here in Massachusetts they decriminalized possession of small marijuana amounts to be only a civil fine of $100.

tshetter 2009-06-28 11:04:19 AM
Buying the opium from the farmers, cutting out the taliban middle men and producing morphine and other drugs for 3rd world nations would be a horrible business plan.

No one should try that.

This is the classic slippery slope

People come out and say LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE... ok fine.. but then the same arguments that are used in that fight get applied to the LEGALIZE BIGAMY war cry. Apply this same logic to the marijuana vs. cocaine or heroin crowd.

The government will always want to be involved in doing what it thinks is best for you!

Be it from who you should marry to what you should put in your body.

What a stupid thing to do.

Obviously, the correct thing to do is to keep following the same plan that has been an abject failure the last 5-6 years, because it's working so well.

I wouldn't call smerfnablin to have expressed a "non sequitur" as much as, say, a "lame expression of perhaps mental illness but certainly complete irrelevancy."

So what if they got their weapon money from a bakes sale, would we blow up all their pie stands? It's because they produce something that's illegal for us. We should have bombed Canada during the Prohibition for making booze.

They shoot anybody *using* poppy, which is forbidden under Islamic law. Selling poppy to infidels is OK because they're subhuman so it doesn't matter if they pollute their bodies.

Alt_Login 2009-06-28 11:24:00 AM
"The Western policies against the opium crop, the poppy crop, have been a failure. They did not result in any damage to the Taliban, but they put farmers out of work."

We are not going to support crop eradication. We're going to phase it out," he said. The emphasis would instead be on intercepting drugs and chemicals used to make them, and going after drug lords.

Meanwhile, here in the US, the same failed yet high profit war on drugs is raking in billions in property seizure, fines and incarceration costs all while targeting the low level grocery store clerks and gas station attendants. I haven't even smelled or touched pot in over 30 years but I don't expect the govt to back away from its largest cash-cow.

Actually this makes sense, why target the farmer and the crop? No profit in that. Wait until it is processed and sold, then seize the money and all property, planes, weapons, homes and cars of those involved in the sale/purchase! Profit!

/I love the smell of American law enforcement in the morning

Headless Medusa 2009-06-28 11:46:33 AM
The war on drugs; a brief history:
1960's - 'War' declared on drugs.
1970's - 'War' re-declared on drugs.
1980's - 'War' on drugs ramped up. 'We'll get 'em this time'.
1990's - 'War' on drugs escalated.
2000's - 'War' on drugs called successful, needs more funding.

Results:
Drugs are more plentiful than ever, albeit more expensive (like everything else, including the war on drugs).
More plentiful drugs are much more potent, offsetting the cost increase to some extent.
Heavily armed drug gangs proliferate with ease.
A dozen or more heavily armed paramilitary organizations roam our streets looking for thier share of the budgetary pie.
The average citizen, caught in the middle, is in more danger than before the war began.

While I do not advocate legalization of all drugs, I can't see anything resembling 'success'.

Quite the contrary, it provides a much needed context to evaluate current events. However, it tends to make me cynical and disrespectful of what passes for a jounalist today.
