Students are mixed on their feelings of the new system. Some say it is nice that more can be honored, but others feel the shared honor lacks the same impact.

I'm surprised schools even keep grades anymore! Surprised they haven't gone to pass/fail. Oops, can't label someone as "fail" as it would hurt their feelings. Maybe it will be pass/you tried real hard and that is ok.

I wonder if they were taught the definition of grade inflation?

I also think we should have at least 5 Superbowl champs per year.

Weird. Is this a repeat from 1970? 1980? 1990?

It happens all the time you "OMG PUSSIFICATION" morans. Maybe it's new at this school, but many places have treated ties as ties for a long time.

Don't let that get in the way of your "everyone has to win" stupidity, though.

The tradition has been chipped away slowly by lawsuits, too.

Last year, Amherst parent Albert Gilewicz filed a lawsuit on behalf of his second-ranked daughter, disputing the inclusion of accelerated students, one of whom was ranked first. The appeal was denied.

It's practically a repeat from last weekend. I imagine we'll see much of the same biatching/moaning, amazing anecdotes, and trolling as we did last time.

I was 1 of 15. So it does cheapen it a little...college that is. Scholarships flow in for valedictorians a little bit easier. I was not the "top" student even though we were all tied.

AP classes weren't given an extra weight...so I didn't take any.

The worse part was that we ALL gave speeches.

Guys, at my daughter's cousin's high school no one can even give blood anymore because the Red Cross says that 75% of them have HIV and so they all get A's in Advanced Calculus which is really the equivalent of 4th grade math after they had to adjust the curriculum!

Meh. Rural school districts in hillbilly central Pennsylvania have been doing this for years.

My daughter is angry b/c she wants to know where she ranks. In 9th grade she was #14. She's going to be a senior and they've stopped telling kids where they are.

/Though we're pretty sure her friend is going to be Valedictorian. Her GPA is over 4.

This. Someone needs to teach the "OMG, TIES ARE BAD" people about statistically significant differences.

Nicholas Urfe 2009-06-28 10:23:59 AM
The college I went to had an automatic scholarship (a few $k) for anyone who was valedictorian. I'm betting lots of others do too. This high school is probably trying to manipulate those types of programs.

Something similar used to be done in TX. The top 10 percent of each high school was supposed to get automatic admission to any state college. There were some schools in the late 90s who reported 15+% of their students in the top 10%.

I don't know. Maybe ditch the grade systems that do not have finer units of marking like systems that use "letter grades?"

"What grade did you get, Johnny?"

"I got a A+"

"What grade did you get, Billy?"

"I got an A+"

"But you answered one question less with a correct answer than Johnny?

"Yeah! Isn't that cool?"

"Umm, not so much."

At my high school, there was only one valedictorian, and that's the way we liked it. Actually, my high school was completely nuts. The AP classes were weighted 5.0 while the other courses were weighted 4.0. Of course, not every course could be taken AP (i.e. PE) , so some courses you had to take were weighted 4.0. Therefore for someone gunning to be valedictorian, the key to getting it would be take as many AP classes as possible regardless of interest just to boost GPA. This led to all sorts of insane tricks such as taking 4.0 classes like PE by correspondence during the summer to free up slots during the school year to take AP Geography II/Physics II/Chemistry II or whatever. This also led to the side effect of people refusing to take cool 4.0 classes such as guitar or carpentry since it lowered GPA. The net effect is a bunch of grade-grubbing, back-stabbing, cheating bastards all clawing to the top. Did I mention that I didn't like high school?

When I graduated from university, there was a valedictorian for each faculty. So, five faculties meant five valedictorians. But each faculty had our own separate ceremony, so it wasn't as retarded as the school FTA.

College competition is stiffer than ever.

That said, you need a graduate degree these days to climb the corporate ladder, and it always amazed me in grad school that for every Princeton or Columbia grad I sat next to, there were three students from colleges I had either never heard of or knew only from March Madness. My point being, I'm not sure it matters where you go undergrad if you're planning on getting a professional, doctorate or medical degree afterward; for every Harvard MD I've met who did their bio/chem BS at, for example, Princeton, I can tell you about a Johns Hopkins MD who graduated from UMBC. Go to the school you can graduate for free from. Trust me, no one will look down at you for having a free UNC or Michigan degree instead of one you paid 160k for from Brown.
