Where were these people when I was in school?

Oh yeah, in diapers.

I'll have a seat over there. Dang nabit.

It's true. Buy 'em a couple of packs of smokes and some Boone's and you're in like Flynn. My Saturday nights are booked two months out.

While no one is sure why the teen birth rate is on the rise, many are concerned about where the increasing number of pregnant and parenting teenage girls will turn for help as their options are whittled away.

Really?

No one is sure?

Here, I'll help. It rhymes with "Schmabstinence Schmonly Schmeducation," and it's a direct results of eight years of suffering a oron-may in the hite-way ouse-hay named eorg-gay ush-bay.

Come on guys, just don't do what comes naturally. That's it. Don't worry about those things on the market that can help to prevent this--those things are bad. The only thing that matters is not having sex!

That never works, and hasn't for over a thousand years.

People forget that at 14 a Roman male could get a sword, join the legion, and become head of household, legally. We need to stop acting like they're kids and impress upon them the difference a good education (Technical or Baccalaureate, et al) can make on your life and how much easier it is to care for children if you're not worried about where the money for food will come from.

That and impress upon kids that having kids is neither easy nor fun if you can't pay for it. Finally, we need to develop a form of male b/c that isn't a barrier method. You'll see pregnancies drop quite a bit when both parties can have access to something like Depo-provera. Of course the screams you hear will be the fundies and all the women that want to get knocked up by deception (i.e. the "don't worry, I've on birth control." types) crying out.

jrshull 2009-06-28 11:26:47 AM
It was not long ago that we were seeing headlines about how anal sex was way up among teens, in lieu of the contraceptives the Fundie Abstinence Only crowd didn't want distributed.

What happened in Shasta County?

We need to get the buttseks pamphlets in there, so the kids can remain Godly and babyless.

Like my awesome ex-wife. Silently stopping her birth control so she could conceive a child to force me to stay in a horrific relationship.

/Left anyway.

What I find interesting is that the measurement is for pregnancies in females between 15 and 19.

In my opinion, that makes it a pretty poor indicator of the problem traditionally called "teenage pregnancy".

If someone is 18 or 19 and wants to have kids, whatever they can go for it as much as I care. I might think that they should likely wait, but they can do what they want.

Now, 15-17, I definitely think they should not be having kids.

So what if this increase was among 19 year olds? Then it's no big deal. If it was all 15 year olds, then there is a definite concern.

shower_in_my_socks [TotalFark] 2009-06-28 11:41:37 AM
Abstinence education for teens is worthless.

I'm 30 and I STILL want to bang a teenager 18-year-old.

BlowPopGirl 2009-06-28 11:44:03 AM
Graduating from a small Wyoming High School in '93, my class was 42 members strong. Of these, 8 of them were unwed mothers. Another got married our senior year when she got pregnant for the 3rd time. We always claimed that there was nothing else to do there. We were part of that generation who demanded entertainment every moment. Left to ourselves, we did what we could. The saddest part of that is noticing how many of those girls ended up never leaving that town because they didn't feel capable of being anything outside of the support that they garnered in town.

Dorothy Day 2009-06-28 11:44:20 AM
So what the hell else is there to do in Shasta County?

Their cunning abstinence plan, they didn't think it all the way through...

They failed to mention the demographics of the teen mothers. Nor do they recognize the fact that in California, teen pregnancy among a certain demographic is the key that unlocks vast amounts of assistance checks. Welfare, WIC, food stamps etc... Big business.

FYI - Shasta County isn't going to improve over training teenagers against teen pregnancy. They should start with eradicating meth labs. Redding is like Bakersfield's okie/redneck cousin.

/lived in both.
//the shiat you see in Redding is scary.

Tell me about it. I'd love to have gone to high school nowadays.

Forty+ years ago, my parents went to high school in a very small town that also had a Quaker college. Parents' school had parties, dances, music...high school stuff. The Quacker college had none of the fun things and had (and still does) a pregnancy rate thru the roof. Proves you find your fun where you can.

I think it's that, mixed with hormones (our parents are gone and we're alone and we both want it RIGHT NOW and we're not sneaking off to buy condoms and embarrass ourselves at whatever store and risk friends or family catching us buying them...) mixed with a lack of frank discussion about sex etiquette.

Dick Schittlippz 2009-06-28 12:17:05 PM
Why not? Most of these girls know that if they have a kid, they will be able to secure free housing, food, and medical care. That is a hell of a lot better than what the would likely have if they didn't have a kid.

Right. As a 16-year-old, I would have never had the nerve to ask for condoms. Hell, it's still a bit embarrassing. Yogurt *beep* Oreos *beep* Trojans ...*beep*

Unless things have changed, most Shasta County schools did not have abstinence only sex ed, they taught the full on thing with condoms, etc.

The main reason....? There is shiat to do in Shasta or Tehama County. When I grew up there what was the number one recreational activity for those of us who didn't want to live the hick lifestyle? Sex. Lots of it.

I got laid so much growing up there that I am surprised I don't have more kids running around out there besides the one child I have. Thing is I was smart about it and always wrapped my penis before sticking it anywhere.

Of course, with Shasta County being the state's dumping ground for sex offenders, I wouldn't at all be surprised if that was part of the reason.....

What drug stores do you guys go to?

Here in Michigan, pretty much every store- drug stores and grocery stores especially- have the condoms, lube, spermicide gel, and other over-the-counter sex stuff on the floor next to the feminine hygiene products and adult diapers (charming image, I know). You pick up what you want, go to the U-Scan computer/cash registers, and never interact with a human being.

`Worst case is that you have some teenage cashier ring your stuff up in a Rite-Aid.

It's been AGES since I've seen a place that keeps that stuff behind the counter.
