RTFH. She's just died. Ergo, newsworthy.

If this isn't greenable, then neither are any of the stories about some washed-up old crazy child-fondling druggie pop dude from the 1980s.

Why doesn't Dr House get any of the credit in the article?

Damn. That's really too bad. She was a brave woman; we need more like her, not fewer.

RIP

What a Dr. Nielsen might look like, if she were played by Susan Sarandon.

I'd love to stay in Antarctica for a summer session (3 months), but I don't want my wisdom teeth out that badly.

Get them out now.

Cancer is a bummer... that's why each and every day I thoroughly fondle my testicles.

That is why I fondle my boobs. Either that or because of Japanese chicks in school girl uniforms.

Brave woman. We need more people like that.

Meh. They're fine, they're clean, and my Dad has never had a problem with his, and he's over sixty. Those little one-handed floss-on-a-stick thingys are awesome.

I'd say 80% of people out there would rather crumple up into a sobbing ball rather than contemplate doing a self-biopsy or mixing up their own chemo cocktail. I know it'd give me pause.

Not so sure about the second option. I'm pretty sure dumping waste in Antarctica is a violation of international law.

Don't wish her any harm. I remember the story at the time and for some reason I have this memory that there was something goofy about it. Sorta like it needn't have happened or something except she kinda put herself in that position based on some problematic life decisions.

She obviously didn't do a good job. She did what she did to simply survive. Not a hero in any sense of the word. People need to understand the meaning of words before they use them otherwise they just sound sad and pathetic. That is all.

outlanderreader 2009-06-28 01:49:07 PM
The word is heroine (for you Farkers, no, not the drug). It's just too bad that our language is being mangled so thoroughly.

Moreover, I couldn't call her actions heroic. She was a trouper and, most likely, a person of strong will. But a heroine, no.

She had breast cancer in 1999 so she was in remission for some years before it came back. Anyway, how can anybody do a "good job" on removing their own cancer? With limited equipment and laymen assistants?

I listened to her book on audio DVD. I wouldn't call her a hero, necessarily, but she had an interesting experience at the Pole. Not just the cancer but the culture and the strange medical things that happen to people. Too bad H.P. Lovecraft wasn't around to work some of that stuff into "Mountains of Madness"

You do have to be brave to venture to the Antarctic where one or two generators are between you and freezing to death. And being the only doctor in a remote location and having to operate on oneself is kind of hard core, if nothing else.

\be warned if anyone feels like getting the book on DVD
\\she didn't have the greatest speaking voice.

JohnBigBootay 2009-06-28 02:10:58 PM
Tough chick? Sure. Not a hero.

Egalitarian [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-06-28 02:16:54 PM
She did run around naked outside the Antarctic camp. Again maybe not heroic but pretty ballsy. (Ovarsy?)

a week and a half ago is not a zillion years :)

/If this was sarcasm, it was pathetic.

Bendal 2009-06-28 03:22:12 PM
The Weather Channel ran an hour-long story on her and the problems she encountered with diagnosing her cancer while she was in Antarctica. The weather was so bad there that the USAF couldn't fly supply planes in because the hydraulic fluid would freeze up, and when they dropped the supplies off there was some concern when the cargo ramp froze in an open position.

When they flew the relief plane in to get her out of there, the window of opportunity was just a few hours wide and the plane had to fly from New Zealand with specially fitted anti-icing devices on it. Once the plane landed they couldn't sit in one place for very long or it would freeze to the ice, so they had to rush her out before the plane stopped moving and almost literally threw her in while it was still taxiing around.

At the end of the story they did mention her cancer had returned and it sounded like she knew at the time it was going to be terminal, but IIRC they made that article a few years ago. She was one remarkable and courageous woman.

Website is a piece of crap, it finished loading as a blank white screen. When I hit refresh, then I get the page and I can read a few sentences before it turns white again.

I suspect it has to do with my disabling of Javascript and popups. EVIL EVIL WEBSITE, BAD SUBBY!
