How big a pinhead do you have to be to get chased away several times by firefighters, then come back with a chainsaw and try to cut through a live power line? I have to wonder what was going through this guy's head.

/beside 14,000 volts, I mean

A drunken idiot in Sullivan County? Shocking!

The accident happened in the presence of firefighters who had been guarding the fallen line.

Accident? I do not think it mean what you think it means.

This is why you should use the chainsaw missile instead.

Do beverages containing alcohol have labels warning not to operate machinery?

Why was the line still hot for so long? Isn't the power to a downed line supposed to be automatically cut off? Or if it doesn't cut off automatically, cuts off manually?

I was just watching a thing on fixing power lines. On the really high tension wires there will be an induced current in the wires that are in theory off--and this current can be quite lethal.

FTA: "New York authorities say a man was electrocuted Saturday when he tried to cut through a downed power line with an industrial saw."

Weird. Industrial saws are usually attached to a table or platform. I wonder if it was a chainsaw or a hand held power saw.

Article here (new window) from the local rag has more details.

Circular saws and 4,800 volts don't mix.

Ah, another story involving a power tool that doesn't fail to entertain. Chainsaws in particular tend to make for the best Fark headlines.

"The accident happened in the presence of firefighters who had been guarding the fallen line."

Er... Even the newspaper gets a fail on this one. It wasn't an "accident," it was an "incident." Drunk or not, the man was told not to mess with the downed power lines (and chased away). He messed with them anyway. The action and result was intentional.
