RUSH SUCKS! A Canadian that knows, when there is a mandated content of 30% Canadian artists on the radio one hears Rush, Brian Adams and Our Lady Peace way too often. Not that I am saying Rush does not have some talent, it is just that they are one of the most annoying sounding bands out there.

//Two cents

I was a fanatical rush fan from roughly 1980 to 1989 (corresponding with ages 13-22) - attended every concert I could, waited in line on the day new albums were released, etc...

Now though, the only music of theirs I can stand is the very first few years (such as "working man", "passage to bangkok")

The rest of their stuff sounds as if they started with some actual talent, and then just watered it down/screwed it all up trying to be clever (by alternating time signatures every few seconds, because they found traditional time signatures "boring", and other high-concept goofiness)

But the early stuff, the actual rock and roll - some of that is darn good, IMHO. Too bad they thumbed up their noses at "rock and roll" and tried to go all random-time-signature and concept-y. That's great for your rebellious teenage psuedo-intellectual. But it doesnt age well at all.

Thats my opnion, anyway.

/Loved the video.

you could tell they were young though, they're still learning how to be showmen.

I too greatly enjoy RUSH bashing.
Especially here on FARK.

RUSH are one of the corniest and most pretentious bands of all time.
The once quoted line about "Rush fans are the Trekkies of rock and roll" is hilariously spot on.

H O W E V E R

Rush is one of the tightest bands ever. Their records from 74-81 are perfectly recorded and sound beyond superb. Rush performances are legendary for their quality performances and the boys have a solid reputation for professionalism. They REALLY put on a show and obviously greatly care for their fans.

I saw Rush in 82 and they put on a flawless 2 1/2 hour set.
"Camera Eye" and "Witch Hunt" were real standouts.

Yeah.
Rush are goofy as hell but I am a musician (bass mostly)
and therefore can NOT deny being in awe of them.

Welcome to the Machine [TotalFark] 2009-06-27 03:05:18 PM
Ahhhh, pre "Farewell to Kings" Rush.

I haven't seen them live since the tour for 2112.

All of the haters are letting the current, melodramatic, synth infused Rush taint their opinion.

Early 70's Rush is one of the top 5 power trio's EVAR!

Kuta 2009-06-27 03:24:24 PM
Love this song. Rush's self-titled debut was one of the first albums I ever purchased in the early 80s. Track 1 is Finding My Way and it's a great way to be introduced to the band. Awesome.

Rush haters can go eff themselves, as far as I'm concerned.

Absolutely. I saw them back in these early days. First Rush show I went to they were opening for BOC; the second they opened for Aerosmith. Rush was the highlight of both these shows.

They opened on Counterparts too? I saw Primus open for Rush on the Roll the Bones tour. Totally believable though, I hear that both bands are big fans of the other.

Oh, and in reference to the videos from rocinante's post. That second one is from Albany on Roll the Bones (I saw RTB in Binghamton). I saw them opening night for the Test For Echo tour in Albany and Geddy skipped a whole verse in Spirit of Radio and made a joke about working out the bugs on opening night after.

i have been a stagehand for close to 20 years now.i have seen almost every band that has toured in the last 2 decades imaginable. for both good and bad. i used to hate on rush. i mean, H.A.T.E. it would make Fark liters blush....but then i was paid to run a spotlight for their show. (1996 or so). never, ever again will i make fun of rush.or geddy' voice, or the progrock aspect. love em or hate em, they are the closest to perfection i have ever seen in the hundreds and hundreds of bands in my life. (and i still dont even consider myself a fan.

so suck it lahey, bubbles will be the tech

Certainly You Jest 2009-06-28 10:39:09 AM
The love/hate for Rush on Fark is always entertaining.

I maintain that it's all about Geddy's voice and its "either love it or hate it" nature. Me, I watch this clip and Geddy's absolutely on top of his vocal game. Somebody else hears it and is reminded of fingernails and chalkboards and cats in heat.

Their fitness for the hall of fame is indisputable, in my opinion. Longevity, artistic growth and development, live performance stamina and prowess, sheer professionalism, two of the three members being automatics in any debate about the top 3 rock players ever on their instruments, it's a no-brainer.

I call political shenanigans on the rock hall voting committee, however it works. Someone involved must simply be dead-set on not letting them in, much less up for a vote.

I went to the RNRHOF not too long ago (was up in Cleveland for a wedding and decided to stop by). They don't allow photos inside, but I had to protest in my own little way...

What I haven't been able to figure out is why the audio sounds so muddy from the R30 and S&A tours.

The thing I always liked about them was that they sounded as good live in the 80's and 90's than they did in the studio.

I have the DVDs and the audio quality sucks compared to what you hear and earlier live shows.

Yeah I know they are older but I am referring to the playing. Maybe it's the sound equipment they are using.

You got lucky, man. I got stuck with Candlebox. Frickin' Candlebox. Rush however was as absolutely amazing as you can imagine. Easily one of my top ten favorite concerts -- and that's with Candlebox opening.

TSE 2009-06-29 03:50:06 AM
Their best work was definitely late 70s-early 80s, but every one of their albums has good stuff. For me, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are the peak. The short instrumental on their most recent album is a face melter, featuring Neil on a regular 4-piece kit instead of his rockstar rig. It was nominated for a grammy.

TheMikey 2009-06-29 08:38:44 PM
Rush is great. People who bash them are totally crazy.

They set a very high standard with Moving Pictures in 1980. A lot of cynical people I know like to criticize Rush because they "haven't put out anything great since Moving Pictures." Those people are usually the same tools who only like U2, The Ramones, and The Stones, all bands who put out some real stinker albums!

Rush is the most consistent band ever. If you listen to all their stuff, you will find at least 3 excellent songs on each album. And the concerts are incredibly intense.

Four great albums since Moving Pictures: Signals, Power Windows, Roll the Bones, Snakes and Arrows.

They won't ever be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; that honor is reserved only for fag bands like Genesis.

:-O

i sure hope that was a troll.

sure they (Genesis) might've done 'twee' stuff like "harlequin" and "dusk"... but they were/are not a 'fag band'. besides, none of them are (or were) even gay.
let's see Rush do something like "back in NYC".

/ likes Rush
// likes Genesis even more. [PG era more than Collins era for the most part]

Say what you will but I've been a die hard fan since I was 12. I've seen them in concert 21 times and they are always amazing. They have been the soundtrack to the better part of my life.

Incredibly talented. And if we, the fans, are the Trekkies of the rock world (can't find who said it - at work=limited time)...fine by me!

I'm female too, makes me more of oddity. It's been my understanding that we (the female fans) are rare.

Good for you! My wife is also a fan and we've seen them in concert seven times together going back to when they opened for Blue Oyster Cult. It was awesome seeing them live for the first time but it got better each concert we attended.

halo_of_flies 2009-06-30 08:02:26 PM
I first saw them at the Knob Hill Tavern when they still had John Rutsey on drums. Sorry, but I liked them better then. I can't tell you how many times I just want to yell at Peart to just play a simple beat for a few seconds!
