I'm always amused by the idea that we should utilize the freedom bestowed upon us by a deity to...subjugate ourselves to said deity.

Also, that document is codified, digitized, and compressed crazy in Portable Document Format.

It must be such hard work enforcing morality on everyone, its no wonder they crack.

No, no, no, you see, when a liberal does something immoral, it's clearly because they're liberal, and liberals have no sense of morality or understanding of evil. For instance, Bill Clinton's affairs were due 100% to his being a beacon of liberalness.

Whereas when a conservative does something that appears to be immoral, it's clearly due to the pervasive, corrupting influence of a liberal society on an otherwise upstanding conservative Christian. Mark Sanford's affairs are also 100% due to Bill Clinton being a beacon of liberalness -- his liberal penis polluted our common culture for decades!

thamike: Isn't this unconstitutional?

Yes, very.

LEMON v. KURTZMAN, 403 U.S. 602 (1971)

1. The government's action must have a secular legislative purpose;

2. The government's action must not have the primary effect of either advancing or inhibiting religion;

3. The government's action must not result in an "excessive government entanglement" with religion.

Violations:

"We the People of Oklahoma, invoking the guidance of Almighty God, in order to secure and perpetuate the blessing of Liberty; to secure just and rightful government123[...]to acknowledge the need for a national awaking of righteousness123 in our land [...]the HOPE of the great State of Oklahoma and of these United States, rests upon the Principles of Religion and Morality as put forth in the Holy Bible123[...] we the undersigned, believers in the One True God and His only Son123[...] we, the undersigned, humbly call upon Holy God, our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer, to [...] grant a national awakening of righteousness and Christian renewal.123"

There is absolutely no secular purpose to this document, it openly claims its purpose is to promote a specific religion (Christianity), and it calls for the government to entangle itself with the principles of that religion.

You joke, but I remember a link a couple of days back wherein Hislimbaughness was saying that Sanford's affair and disappearance was, indeed, Obama's fault. That the President's reckless liberalism and having had Obama's giant, throbbing stimulus forced down Stanford's throat was just too much for the poor governor and he snapped.

"God who gave us life gave us liberty and can the liberties of a nation be hought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God" (Thomas Jefferson);

This is actually a conflation of two quotes from Jefferson, from A Summary View of the Rights of British America: The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them. and from Notes on the State of Virginia, Query 18: This is so true, that of the proprietors of slaves a very small proportion indeed are ever seen to labour. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?

The former is part of a piece of propaganda targeting the monarch. The latter is a QUESTION, with to my mind an obvious answer: yes, provided you can first provide an alternative and comparably firm basis.

Would anyone like a balloon?

A proclamation from the great State of Farkistan:

Whereas, it has become apparent that the state of human development in the world has stagnated due to the influence of fundamentalist religion (Hitchens), and

Whereas, the vast majority of large-scale conflicts in the world today are based entirely in the concept of religious superiority and creed-mandated dominance over "heathen" peoples, and

Whereas, the United States in particular suffers in both world opinion and int its ability to achieve in the areas of science and medicine, due largely to the poisonous influences of religionists, specifically their pushing of nonsense creationist agendas and worshipping the false idols of blastocysts in cold storage, and

Whereas, the pervasive stigma against avowed humanists prohibits virtually all non-religious individuals from successfully attaining high political office without affecting the pretend trappings of a pretend religion, and

Whereas, the majority of remaining bigotry and discrimination against fellow humans the world over is consistently justified with reference to religious teachings and texts which have vanishing relevance to modern society, and

Whereas, the evidence-based sciences have consistently, uniformly, and in totality failed to produce one scintilla of evidence supporting the hypothesis that a supreme being exists, can hear our prayers, and becomes petulant when he does not receive our toadying, sycophantic flattery, and

Whereas, the problems which exist in the world today, including but not limited to overpopulation, hunger, war, disease, lack of education, lack of opportunity, and inequality will never be solved by relying on religious texts which suppress science and innovation,

Therefore, we, the citizens of Farkistan, do hereby and forthwith call on governments of cities, states, and countries of the world to repudiate any public policy which is directly or indirectly based on religious tenet or teaching, and we further call on all governments to recognize and reinforce the advanced and civilized idea that the right to freedom FROM religion should be respected on an equal level with freedom OF religion, and that, just as individual freedom does not extend to injuring others, religious freedom must be constrained so that it does not affect the choices, options, or futures of those who do not wish to believe or practice religion.

So sayeth the citizens of Fark, this Twenty-Seventh Day Of June, Year Two Thousand and Nine of the Common Era.

The nice thing about Sally Kern is she's a wonderful touchstone. I came out 16 years ago, where comments like hers weren't met with much opposition. It's amazing to me to see how much society has evolved since then and continues to get better.

So, thank you Sally, for showing how ignorance used to be, it's like a time machine into the past.

Too bad you stopped going backwards when it came to the rights of women to be elected into positions of power (as it says in your Bible ). But, baby steps, I guess.

Whereas: I read the word "whereas" in some official document once and believe it to be a word that makes me sound intelligent, lawyerly, and efficient; and,

Whereas: I believe that the colon, not the comma, is the correct follow-up to the word "whereas" in every instance of its use and find colons to be cool and interesting items of punctuation that I am looking forward to using frequently in this document; and,

Whereas: I am also a fan of the occasional use of CAPITALIZATION, and having seen this practice also performed in other important and official DOCUMENTS plan to do some of it in this one as well; and,

WHEREAS: I'm not really sure what "whereas" means, though, since it appears to be made up of the words "where" and "as" and it's not entirely clear to me how those two words relate to one another. In fact, it seems like it would be more appropriate to use a word like "Because" or even "Because of" or maybe even make up a word that's a combination of those two, like "becof;" but,

WHEREAS: I've never seen the word "becof" used in an important document before, so I guess it would seem silly to use it here when I want people to take me seriously; so,

WHEREAS: I'll just keep using "whereas" to start these paragraphs. But now I forgot what I came here to say. Damn.

Whereas: I guess that means I have to stop now.

If you want to stand on the street corners and scream your prayers, I really don't care. Even if you want to do it in a State's Senate chamber, I'll not mind all that much (I'll object, but it's not like this law has any sort of punishments for skipping services).

Why invoke teh Jeebus? Are there not millions of good Americans who believe in (a) god(s) without the Christian dogma attached? I speak of Jews (like Rabbi Barry Freundel) Muslims (like Rep. Keith Ellison), Hindus, non-Jesus worshipping Christians (there are sects like that IIRC)...

FSM above, this kind of shiat only reinforces my decision to leave religion entirely. So thanks for turning this American further off religion, coont.

Well, to an extent, she's right. Part of our economic woes came from people disregarding basic decency and grabbing as much as they could from anyone they could without any thought or regard for the consequences. That's a moral issue right there, although likely not the one she was thinking of.
