"Slowcore?' There really needs to be a "Munich" style elimination of certain Rolling Stone writers. Especially ones who were active in the late 1980s to mid-1990s.

Every type of music is '-core' of some variety. I like to think of Mozart as 'Salzcore'.

At least it's not Leisure Suit Hardcore.

Oh wait. Scratch. That's actually cool. So is Leather Chaps Opera, but that probably already exists. Unfortunately.

I like Sun Kil Moon better.

I like Gillian Welch's version of Albuquerque better.

I love the Red House Painters, but this is more of a straight forward cover than I'm used to. Check out Mark Kozeleks Rock n Roll singer album where he does Bon Scott era AC/DC songs. Really good.

Radar Bros is my favorite from this "genre"

btw---this music is actually EXTREMELY difficult to play.
Contrary to popular(idiotic) belief. Slow music actually is very hard to execute. Super fast up tempo music sounds difficult but is really quite easy. Slow music is where the real pros shine.
THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ERROR
At a lower tempo, any mistake will stand out.

Architecture Of Aggression 2009-06-27 04:29:34 PM
that's funny. "up tempo music that sounds difficult is really quite easy". that's actually really funny now that I type it out myself. some is yes, but just like slow music some is easy and some is hard so...no real side to take on this. lame.

Architecture Of Aggression

Are you a musician?

Slow music is hard. Period.
Ask ANY musician in any orchestra. Conductor too.

Miles Davis used to make musicians trying out for his band play slow ballads rather than showcasing their ability with busy solos. He knew what really showed the true merit of a good musician.

The term slowcore refers to a subgenre of alternative and indie rock. The music of slowcore artists is generally characterized by downbeat melodies, slower tempos and minimalist arrangements. Slowcore is closely related to sadcore.[1]

In some one's mind, at least.

And really, what the hell is slowcore and no, DON'T give me a lazy google link. Just tell us.

Red House Painters were awesome, but I like Sun Kil Moon much more. I'm getting too old to deal with the black hole of misery that your average RHP album provides.

Flipper still rules,okay...They are the only legendary slow core band in my (odd) book.

Somehow any band that stays afloat (even if just barely) for more than 5-10 years is legendary.

You could pretty much just copy the lyrics of just about any RHP song down and use them as a suicide note.

Just take a word descriptive of the music, add "core", and you have a new subgenre! Don't forget to make a new one for every three bands.

Kodiak Attack 2009-06-28 01:47:38 AM
I've never found RHP to be all that depressing - more wistful than anything. "Down Colorful Hill" is the only album of theirs that I've really spent a lot of time with, but that album reminds me a lot of looking back at old times and wishing they could happen again. I guess that could be depressing.

/don't mind me, I'm drunk

I remember Jonascore, Cyruscore, and Nancy Gracecore. I'm STILL paying for the laser tattoo removal.

If a band's music does not contain elements of hardcore punk, using the "-core" suffix is completely, utterly, brain-blisteringly RETARDED.

FTFY

If you want to argue about what some dickhead rock journalist decided to classify the music as rather than the actual music, well therein lies the problem.

Slowcore is a stupid genre name. I'm on board with the dislike of labeling music somethingCore, I've always thought the ____core genre naming system is dumb as hell. But that doesn't change the way I feel about the music itself. Maybe you can't look past a label, which is too bad because you'll miss out on some good music that way.

skylabdown 2009-06-28 09:20:16 AM
I think "minimalist" is a better description... and one that actually has meaning.

2nd album, let's self-title it. 3rd album? Yeah, let's just self-title that too.. the same title, no II or anything. Pictures of the band? Nah.. lyrics? nah.. anything? nope... you're lucky there's a song listing.

RHP-I is still one of my fav albums ever.

Neil Young sucks, and so do these guys for covering his music. At least they're not overrated. It is, however, douchebaggy labels like "slowcore" that keep hacks like this in business and people like you eating it up.

To each their own. I completely agree that genre labeling has gotten out of hand. Of course I had never heard the term slowcore until after I had already been listening to the Red House Painters. I listen to music for the music, not what some jerk-off wants to tell me the music is called. You don't want to listen to it that's cool, just don't try to tell me why I like to listen to it.

Black Sabbath are too upbeat and pop. Which is why there's Candlemass.
